Concord in Grammar is the agreement between elements of a sentence.
Elements includes subjects,verbs,objects,and adverbs
RULE 1
When the subject in a sentence is singular,the verb should also be singular
Example
a.He(singular subject) moves(singular verb)
b.She (singular subject) walks(singgular verb)
Also when a subject is plural,the verb should be plural
Example
a.The women(plural subject)love(plural verb)
b.The students(plural subject)behave(plural verb)
RULE 2
Subject and Object Concord
Whe everybody or everyone is used,the subject must be singular,not plural.
Example
a.Everyone knows his his or her seat number.
b.Everyone wants to make it in life.
RULE 3
Mandative Subjective concord
When prayer,suggestion,wish,demand,recommendation,or resolution is used in a
sentence,the verb that follows must be plural,whether the subject is singular or
plural.
a.It has been "suggested" that he "goes"
b.The board has "recommended" that the manager "resign"
RULE 4
The principle of proximity
This principle states that when there is a list of nouns or pronouns at the level
of the subject,it is the nearest noun or pronoun to the position of the verb that
determine the choice of the verb.
a.If James fails his examination, his teachers, his parents,his friends "or"John
"is"to be blame.
b.If kofi pass his examination,his teachers,his parents,his friends "or"kofi "is"to
be awarded.
RULE 5
Many a concord.
When many- a is used,the verb and the noun that follows must be singular.
Examples
a.Many a candidate "speaks"bad English expression.
b.Many a boy "is" here.
RULE 6
A pair of concord.
When "a pair of"is used,the verb must be singular.
Examples
a.A pair of "trousers lies" on the bed.
b.A pair of scissors "lies" on the table.
RULE 6
National concord/Collective concord.
A collective noun is a noun that represents many units that constitute that
singular noun.
Examples,people,cattle,club,audience,clergy,and so forth.
Hence whenever, a collective noun is used,the verb that follows must be a plural
verb.
Examples
a.The cattle "produce" milk twice a month.
b.The cattle "is" infected with diseases.
RULE 8
A Parenthesis Concord.
A parenthesis statement is an additional statement to what has aready been said
before.So,therefore,it should not be considered when choosing the verb to use.
Examples
a.The teacher, not his students "is" present.
b.The leader,not his members "is" present.
RULE 9
Accompaniment Concord
When any of these following words are used,the subject of the cluase would be the
noun and pronoun that comes before the marker of accompaniment.Such as:
as much as,alongside,as well as,together with,no less than,in association
with,including,like,with,and so forth.
Examples
a.The constructor,as well as his workers,"is" hardworking.
b.The workers alongside their constructors are here.
RULE 10
More than concord
When more than is used,the word or number comes after more than will determine the
verb to used.
Examples
a.More than four biscuits are in the basket.
b.More than one biscuit is in the basket.
