Daniel 1

1:1 In the third year of the reign of Joakim king of Judea, came
Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it:
2 and the Lord delivered it into his hands, and Joakim king of
Judea, and part of the holy vessels of the Lord; and he carried
them away into Babylon and set them in his idol's temple. 3 And
the king told Abiesdri, his own chief eunuch, to bring him some
of the sons of the nobles of Israel and of royal race and of the
chosen ones: 4 young men in whom was no blemish, and
beautiful in appearance, and endued with knowledge in all
wisdom, and lettered, and prudent and wise and mighty, so as to
be in the house of the king; and to teach them letters and the
Chaldean dialect, 5 And that they be given a portion from the
house of the king every day, even of the royal table and of the
wine, which the king drank, and to instruct them for three years
and to set some of them before the king. 6 And they were of the
race of the sons of Israel who were from Judea: Daniel,
Hananias, Misael, and Azarias. 7 And the chief of the eunuchs
gave them names: to Daniel, Baltasar; and to Ananias, Sedrach;
and to Misael, Misach; and to Azarias, Abdenago. 8 And Daniel
purposed in his heart, that he would not pollute himself with the
king's supper, nor with the wine that he drank: and he intreated
the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. 9 And
the Lord gave Daniel honour and grace before the chief of the
eunuchs. 10 And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I
agonize over my lord the king, who has appointed your meat
and your drink, lest he see your faces downcast and weak in
comparison of the young men of the foreigners with whom ye
are brought up, and I endanger my own neck. 11 And Daniel
said to Abiesdri, the chief of the eunuchs appointed over Daniel,
Hananias, Misael, and Azarias: 12 Prove now thy servants over
ten days! and let it be given us of the pulse of the earth to gulp
down, and water only to drink! 13 And if our appearance seems
downcast in comparison of the other young men that eat of the
royal supper, as thou wilt, so use thy servants! 14 And he treated
them in this manner, and proved them ten days. 15 And after the
ten days their appearance seemed handsome and the condition
of their body better than the other young men that ate the royal
supper. 16 And Abiesdri took away their supper and their wine
and gave them of pulse instead. 17 And the Lord gave the young
men knowledge and understanding and prudence in every art of
letters. And to Daniel he gave understanding in every word and
vision, and in dreams, and in all wisdom. 18 Now after these
days, the king commanded to bring them in, and they were
brought by the chief of the eunuchs unto Nabuchodonosor the
king. 19 And the king conversed with them; and there was not
found among the wise any like Daniel and Ananias and Misael
and Azarias: and they were with the king. 20 And in every
matter and understanding and instruction, that the king sought
of them, he took them to be ten times wiser than the wise men
and philosophers that were in all his kingdom. And the king
honoured them and made them rulers and appointed them above
all his wise men in the matters in all his land and in his
kingdom. 21 And there was Daniel until the first year of the
kingdom of Cyrus king of the Persians.
Daniel 2
2:1 And in the second year of the kingdom of Nabuchodonosor,
it happened that visions and dreams befell the king, and he was
troubled in his dream, and his sleep departed from him. 2 And
the king commanded to bring the enchanters, and the magi, and
the sorcerers of the Chaldeans, to tell the king his dreams. And
they came and stood by the king. 3 And the king said to them, I
have seen a dream, and my spirit was moved; therefore, I wish
to know the dream. 4 And the Chaldeans spoke to the king in
the Syrian tongue, saying, O lord king, live for ever! Tell thy
dream to thy servants! and we will explain its interpretation to
thee. 5 But the king answered and said to the Chaldeans, Except
ye tell me the dream in truth and manifest to me the
interpretation of this thing, ye shall be put to an open shame,
and your goods will be taken into the royal treasury. 6 But if ye
declare to me the dream and tell the interpretation of this thing,
ye shall receive gifts of every kind, and ye shall be honoured by
me. Manifest the dream to me! and judge! 7 But they answered
the second time, saying, O king, do thou tell us the vision! and
thy servants shall judge these things. 8 And the king said to
them, Of a truth I know that ye are trying to gain time, as ye
have seen that the thing has departed from me. As, therefore, I
have commanded, so shall it be. 9 Except ye tell me the dream
in truth and manifest the interpretation of this thing, ye shall fall
into death, for ye have agreed to make lying words before me
until the time be changed. Now therefore if ye tell me the thing I
saw by night, I shall know that ye shall shew even the judgment
of this thing. 10 The Chaldeans answered before the king,
saying, That no one upon the earth shall be able to tell the king
that which he has seen, even as thou dost ask. And no king or
mighty man has asked such a thing of any wise man or magi or
Chaldean. 11 And the word which thou seekest, O king, is
difficult and honoured. And there is none who shall manifest to
the king these things except a messenger whose habitation is not
with any flesh. Wherefore it cannot come to pass as thou
thinkest. 12 Then the king, being gloomy and very sorrowful,
commanded to bring forth all the wise men of Babylonia. 13
And it was decreed to kill all of them, and Daniel and all they
that were with him were sought for the cause that they be
destroyed with them. 14 Then Daniel spoke the counsel and
advice, which he had, to Arioch, the captain of the royal guard,
who commanded to bring forth the wise men of Babylonia. 15
And he enquired of him, saying, wherefore is it being decreed
bitterly by the king? Then Arioch signified the ordinance to
Daniel. 16 So Daniel went quickly in to the king and intreated
that time might be given him from the king, and he would
manifest every thing to the king. 17 Then Daniel went away into
his house to Hananias and Misael and Azarias, his companions,
and he shewed them all these things. 18 And he commanded a
fast and supplication, and to seek vindication from the Lord
most high about this mystery, that Daniel and they that were
with him might not be given up to destruction with the wise
men of Babylon. 19 Then to Daniel in a vision on the same
night the king's mystery was clearly brought to light. Then
Daniel blessed the Lord most high. 20 And he cried out and
said, Blessed shall be the name of the great Lord for ever: for
wisdom and majesty are his. 21 And he changes seasons and
times, removing kings, and setting them in place, giving
wisdom to the wise, and understanding to them that have
knowledge. 22 Unveiling deep and dark matters, and knowing
what is in darkness, and what is in light, and from him is a
dissolution. 23 O Lord of my fathers, I give thanks to thee, and
praise thee, for thou hast given me wisdom and prudence, and
now thou hast signified to me whatsoever I intreated, to
manifest it to the king concerning these things. 24 So Daniel
went in to Arioch, who by the king was set in place to kill all
the wise men of Babylonia. He said to him, Destroy not the wise
men of Babylonia, but bring me unto the king! and I will
manifest every particular to the king. 25 Then Arioch in haste
brought in Daniel unto the king, and said to him, That I have
found a wise man of the captivity of the children of Judea who
will manifest every particular to the king. 26 So the king
answered and said to Daniel, but called in the Chaldean tongue
Baltasar, Canst thou manifest to me the vision which I saw, and
the interpretation of this thing? 27 So Daniel cried out before
the king and said, The mystery which the king has seen: the
manifestation is not of the wise men and sorcerers and
enchanters and soothsayers. 28 But there is a God in heaven
unveiling mysteries who has manifested to king
Nabuchodonosor what things must come to pass in the last days.
O king, live for ever! The dream and the vision of thy head upon
thy bed is this: 29 Thou, O king, layest down upon thy bed; thou
hast seen all that must come to pass in the last days, and he that
unveils mysteries has manifested to thee what must come to
pass. 30 And to me also this mystery was brought to light, not
with wisdom that is in me above all men, but it was signified to
me for the sake of manifesting to the king what thou thoughtest
in thine heart by knowledge. 31 And thou, O king, hast seen,
and, behold one image: and that image was exceedingly great,
and the appearance of it excellent. It stood before thee, and the
appearance of the image was terrible. 32 And its head was of
fine gold, its breast and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of
brass, 33 And its legs of iron; its feet: part of iron, and part of
earthenware. 34 Thou hast seen until a stone was cut out of a
mountain without hands, and it smote the image upon its feet of
iron and earthenware, and ground them down. 35 Then the iron,
the earthenware, and the brass, and the silver, and the gold,
together became very small, and became as it were smaller than
chaff on a threshing-floor, and the wind tossed them so that
there was nothing left of them. And the stone which had smitten
the image became a great mountain and smote all the earth. 36
This is the vision, and now we will tell the judgment before the
king. 37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings, and the Lord of
heaven gave thee the rule and the kingdom and the strength and
the honour and the glory. 38 In all the world of men and wild
beasts and birds of the sky and the fish of the sea, he gave them
under thine hands to have dominion over all. Thou art the head
of gold. 39 And after thee shall arise a kingdom less than thee,
and another third kingdom of brass, which shall have dominion
over all the earth. 40 And a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, that
subdues all things and cuts down every tree, and all the earth
shall be shaken. 41 And as thou hast seen its feet, part of potter's
earthenware and part of iron, another two-part kingdom shall be
in it, even as thou sawest the iron mixed together with clay
earthenware. 42 And whereas the toes of the feet were part of
iron and part of earthenware, part of the kingdom shall be strong
and part shall be broken. 43 And as thou sawest the iron mixed
together with clay earthenware, they shall be mingled in a
generation of men, but they shall not be of the same mind nor
well disposed one to another, even as the iron is not able to be
mixed with earthenware. 44 And in the times of these kings the
God of heaven shall establish another kingdom which shall be
for ever and shall not be corrupted. And this kingdom shall by
no means suffer another nation, but shall smite and utterly
destroy these kingdoms, and it shall be established for ever, 45
even as thou hast seen a stone cut out of a mountain without
hands, and it ground together the earthenware, the iron, and the
brass, and the silver, and the gold. The great God signified to the
king the things that shall come to pass in the last days: and the
vision is exact, and the judgment of this thing is faithful. 46
Then Nabuchodonosor the king fell on his face to the ground,
and bowed down to Daniel, and commanded to offer sacrifices
and drink-offerings to him. 47 And the king cried out to Daniel
and said, Of a truth your God is God of gods, and Lord of kings,
who alone brings to light secret mysteries; for thou hast been
able to manifest this mystery. 48 Then king Nabuchodonosor,
when he had magnified Daniel, and given him many great gifts,
set him over the matters of Babylonia, and set him forth to be
ruler and leader of all the wise men of Babylonia. 49 And
Daniel intreated the king that Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago
might be set over the matters of Babylonia. And Daniel was in
the royal palace.
Daniel 3
3:1 In the eighteenth year of the reign of king Nabuchodonosor,
when he ordered the cities and provinces and all that dwell upon
the land from India to Ethiopia, he made a golden image. Its
height was sixty cubits, and its breadth six cubits: and he set it
up in the plain of the wall of the province of Babylonia. 2 And
Nabuchodonosor, king of kings and ruling over the whole
world, sent forth to gather together all the nations and tribes and
tongues, satraps, captains, heads of provinces and governors,
lieutenants, and those who were in authority in every province
and all those throughout the world to come to the dedication of
the golden image which king Nabuchodonosor had set up. 3
And they that afore were written stood before the image. 4 Then
a herald proclaimed to the multitudes, To you it is commanded,
ye nations and provinces, peoples and tongues, 5 when ye shall
hear the sound of the trumpet, pipe and harp, sackbut and
psaltery, harmony and every kind of music, fall down and bow
before the golden image which king Nabuchodonosor has set
up! 6 And whosoever shall not fall down and bow himself, they
shall cast him into the burning furnace of fire. 7 And at that time
when all the nations heard the sound of the trumpet and every
sound of music, all the nations, tribes, and tongues fell down
and bowed before this thing, before the golden image which
Nabuchodonosor had set up. 8 At that time came Chaldean men,
and accused the Jews, 9 And they answered and said, O lord
king, live for ever! 10 Thou, O king, hast commanded and
judged that every man who shall hear the sound of the trumpet
and every sound of music, shall fall down and bow before the
golden image, 11 And whosoever shall not fall down and bow
himself, shall be cast into the burning furnace of fire. 12 But
there are certain men, Jews whom thou hast set over the
province of Babylonia: Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago. Those
men feared not thy commandment, and served not thine idol,
and bowed not before thy golden image which thou hast set up.
13 Then Nabuchodonosor was greatly angered and commanded
to bring Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago. Then the men were
brought to the king, 14 whom also Nabuchodonosor the king
saw, and said to them, Why, O Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago,
do ye not serve my gods, and why do ye not bow before the
golden image which I have set up? 15 And now if ye be ready,
at the moment of hearing the trumpet and every sound of music,
to fall down and bow before the golden image which I have set
up; well: but if not, know ye! that, not having bowed yourselves,
in the same hour ye shall be cast into the burning furnace of fire;
and what God shall deliver you out of my hands? 16 But
Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago answered and said to king
Nabuchodonosor, O king, we have no need to answer thee about
this command. 17 For God in the heavens is our one Lord,
whom we fear, who is able to deliver us from the furnace of fire;
and from thy hands, O king, he will deliver us. 18 And then it
shall be manifest to thee that neither will we serve thine idol nor
bow before thy golden image which thou hast set up. 19 Then
Nabuchodonosor was filled with wrath, and the form of his face
was changed: and he commanded the furnace to be heated seven
times more than it was needful to heat it. 20 And he commanded
the mightiest men that were in his host to bind Sedrach, Misach,
and Abdenago, and to cast them into the burning furnace of fire.
21 Then those men were bound, having their sandals and their
caps upon their heads, with their raiment, and were cast into the
furnace. 22 Since the king's command was urgent, and the
furnace was heated seven times more than before, and the men,
when they were chosen, bound and brought them to the furnace,
and cast them into it, 23 so then the flame came forth out of the
furnace, and burned and slew the men which bound Azarias and
his companions, but they were preserved. 24/23 After this
manner therefore Ananias and Azarias and Misael prayed and
sang praises to the Lord when the king commanded them to be
cast into the furnace. 25/1 And Azarias stood up, and prayed on
this manner; and he opened his mouth and gave thanks to the
Lord together with his companions in the midst of the fire of the
furnace which was being exceedingly heated from beneath by
the Chaldeans, and they said, 26/2 Blessed art thou, O Lord God
of our fathers: thy name is worthy to be praised and glorified for
evermore: 27/3 for thou art righteous in all the things that thou
hast done to us: yea, true are all thy works, thy ways are right,
and true are all thy judgments. 28/4 And thou hast executed true
judgments in all the things that thou hast brought upon us, and
upon thy holy city of our fathers, even Jerusalem: for in truth
and judgment didst thou execute all these things because of our
sins. 29/5 For in all things we have sinned and transgressed,
departing from thee. 6 And in all things have we greatly sinned,
and not obeyed the commandments of thy law, 30 nor kept
them, neither done as thou hast commanded us, that it might go
well with us. 31/7 And now all that thou hast brought upon us,
and every thing that thou hast done to us, thou hast done in true
judgment. 32/8 And thou didst deliver us into the hands of our
enemies, lawless and most hateful forsakers of God, and to an
unjust king, and the most wicked in all the earth. 33/9 And now
we cannot open our mouth; it is become a shame and reproach
to thy servants, and to them that worship thee. 34/10 Deliver us
not up unto the end, for thy name's sake, neither break thou thy
covenant: 35/11 and cause not thy mercy to depart from us, for
thy beloved Abraham's sake, and for thy servant Isaac's sake,
and for thy holy Israel's sake; 36/12 as thou hast spoken to them,
saying, that thou wouldest multiply their seed as the stars of
heaven, and as the sand which is by the shore of the sea. 37/13
For we, O Master, are become less than any nation, and be kept
under to-day in all the earth because of our sins. 38/14 Neither
is there at this time prince, or prophet, nor leader, nor whole-
burnt-offering, nor sacrifice, nor offering, nor incense, nor place
to sacrifice before thee, and to find mercy. 39/15 Nevertheless in
a broken soul and an humble spirit let us be accepted. 16 As in
the whole-burnt-offerings of rams and bullocks, and as in ten
thousands of fat lambs: 40 so let our sacrifice be in thy sight to-
day! and make thou atonement after thee! for there is no shame
for them that put their trust in thee; and make them perfect after
thee! 41/17 And now we follow thee with all our heart, and we
fear thee, and seek thy face. 18 Put us not to shame: 42 but deal
with us after thy lovingkindness and according to the multitude
of thy mercies! 43/19 Deliver us also according to thy wonders!
and give glory to thy name, O Lord! 44 and let all them that do
thy servants hurt be ashamed; 20 and let them be confounded in
all their might, and let their strength be broken; 45/21 and let
them know that thou alone art the Lord God, and glorious over
the whole world! 46/22 And the king's officers, that cast them
in, ceased not to heat the furnace. And when they cast the three
into the furnace at once, the furnace was fiery-hot, sevenfold in
its heat. And when they cast them in, they that cast them in were
indeed above them, but they were heating them from beneath
with rosin and tow and pitch and small wood; 47/23 so that the
flame streamed forth above the furnace forty and nine cubits,
48/24 and issued out, and burned those whom it found about the
furnace of the Chaldeans. 49/25 But the messenger of the Lord
came down into the furnace together with Azarias and his
companions, and shook off the flame of the fire out of the
furnace, 50/26 and made the midst of the furnace as it had been
a moist whistling wind, so that the fire touched them not at all,
neither grieved nor troubled them. 51/27 Moreover the three, as
out of one mouth, lifted up their voice and praised and glorified
and blessed and exalted God in the furnace, saying, 52/28
Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers: and to be praised
and highly exalted forever. 29 And blessed is thy glorious and
holy name: and to be highly praised and highly exalted for ever
and ever. 53/30 Blessed art thou in the temple of thy holy glory:
and to be highly praised and highly glorified for ever. 54/32
Blessed art thou on the throne of thy kingdom: and to be praised
and highly exalted for ever. 55/31 Blessed art thou that
beholdest the depths, and sittest upon the cherubim: and to be
praised and glorified for ever. 56/33 Blessed art thou in the
firmament: and to be praised and glorified for ever. 57/34 O all
ye works of the Lord, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt
him for ever! 58/36 O ye messengers of the Lord, bless ye the
Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 59/35 O ye heavens,
bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 60/37 O
all ye waters that be above the heaven, bless ye the Lord! Praise
and highly exalt him for ever! 61/38 O all ye powers of the
Lord, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever!
62/39 O ye sun and moon, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly
exalt him for ever! 63/40 O ye stars of heaven, bless ye the
Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 64/41 O every
shower and dew, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt him
for ever! 65/42 O all ye winds, bless ye the Lord! Praise and
highly exalt him for ever! 66/43 O ye fire and heat, bless ye the
Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 67/44 O ye chill and
cold, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 68
O ye dews and snowfalls, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly
exalt him for ever! 69/44 O ye hoar-frosts and cold, bless ye the
Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 70/49 O ye frosts
and snows, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for
ever! 71/46 O ye nights and days, bless ye the Lord! Praise and
highly exalt him for ever! 72/47 O ye light and darkness, bless
ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 73/50 O ye
lightnings and clouds, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt
him for ever! 74/51 O let the earth bless the Lord! Let it praise
and highly exalt him for ever! 75/52 O ye mountains and hills,
bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 76/53 O
all ye things that grow on the earth, bless ye the Lord! Praise
and highly exalt him for ever! 77/54 O ye fountains, bless ye the
Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 78/55 O ye seas and
rivers, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever!
79/56 O ye whales, and all that move in the waters, bless ye the
Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 80/57 O ye fowls of
the air, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever!
81/58 O ye fourfooted and wild beasts of the earth, bless ye the
Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 82/59 O ye children
of men, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever!
83/60 O Israel, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt him
for ever! 84/61 O ye priests, bless ye the Lord! Praise and
highly exalt him for ever! 85/62 O ye servants, bless ye the
Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 86/63 O ye spirits
and souls of the righteous, bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly
exalt him for ever! 87/64 O ye holy and humble men of heart,
bless ye the Lord! Praise and highly exalt him for ever! 88/65 O
Ananias, Azarias, and Misael, bless ye the Lord! Praise and
highly exalt him for ever! for he rescued us from hell, and saved
us from the hand of death, and delivered us out of the midst of
the burning flame, and out of the fire he redeemed us. 89/66 O
give thanks unto the Lord! because he is gracious: for his mercy
endures for ever. 90/67 O all ye that worship, bless the God of
gods! Praise him and give him thanks! for his mercy endures for
ever, even for ever and ever. 91/24 And it came to pass that
when the king heard them singing praises and when he stood up,
he beheld them alive. Then Nabuchodonosor the king
marvelled, and arose with haste, and said to his friends, 92/25
Behold, I see four men loose, walking in the fire: and no
corruption is come upon them; and the appearance of the fourth
is the likeness of a messenger of God. 93/26 And the king drew
near to the door of the furnace burning with fire, and he called
them by name, Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, ye servants of
the most high God of gods, come out of the fire! So then the
men came forth out of the midst of the fire. 94/27 And the
governors, the heads of provinces, and the heads of families,
and the king's friends, were gathered together; and they saw
those men, and perceived that the fire had not touched their
body, and theirs hairs were not burnt, and their trowsers were
not changed, nor was the smell of fire upon them. 95/28 Then
Nabuchodonosor the king answered and said, Blessed be the
Lord God of Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, who has sent his
messenger, and saved his servants that trust in him; for they
rejected the king's command, and delivered their bodies unto the
burning, that they might not serve nor bow down to another god,
but to their own God. 96/29 And now I judge that every nation,
and all tribes and all tongues, whosoever shall blaspheme
against the Lord the God of Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago,
shall be dismembered, and his house shall be seized as public
property: because there is no other God who shall be able to
deliver thus. 97/30 So then the king gave power over the whole
province to Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, and made them
rulers.
Daniel 4
4:1 2 3 4/1 In the eighteenth year of the kingdom of
Nabuchodonosor, he said, I was living peaceably in my house,
and prospering on my throne. 5/2 I saw a dream, and I was
afraid, and fear fell upon me. 6 7 8 9 10/7 I was asleep; and
behold a high tree growing upon the earth. Its appearance was
great, and there was no other like it. 12/9 Its branches were
about the length of thirty furlongs, and all the wild beasts of the
earth took shade under it, and the birds of the sky made their
nests in it. Its fruit was abundant and good, and it provided for
all the living creatures. 11/8 And its appearance was great: its
crown drew nigh unto heaven, and its extent unto the clouds,
filling the places under heaven. The sun and the moon dwelt in
it, and did lighten all the earth. 13/10 I beheld in my sleep, and,
behold, a messenger was sent in strength from heaven. 14/11
And he cried, and said, Cut it down and destroy it! for it has
been commanded by the Most High to pluck it up by the root,
and bring it to nought. 15/12 And thus he said, Leave one root
of it in the earth! that he may feed on grass as an ox with the
wild beasts of the earth in the mountains, 16/13 and his body
might be changed from the dew of heaven, and he might feed
with them seven years, 17/14 until he know the Lord of heaven
to have power over all things that are in heaven and upon the
earth; and whatsoever he will, he does with them. 17a In my
sight it was cut down in one day, and its corruption was in one
hour of the day. And its branches were given unto every wind,
and it was drawn and cast down. And he ate the grass of the
earth with the wild beasts of the earth, and was delivered into
prison, and was bound by them in fetters and in manacles of
brass. I marvelled exceedingly at all these things, and my sleep
departed from my eyes. 18/15 And I rose up in the morning
from my bed, and called Daniel, the ruler of the wise men and
the leader of them which judge the dreams. And I related to him
the dream, and he shewed me the whole interpretation of it.
19/16 But Daniel marvelled greatly, and a suspicion hastened
upon him. And he was afraid, and trembling took hold upon
him, and his appearance changed, and he shook his head, and
marvelled for one hour, and answered me with a meek voice,
saying, O king, this dream be to them that hate thee, and let the
interpretation thereof come upon thine enemies. 20/17 The tree
that was planted in the earth, whose appearance was great, is
thyself, O king. 21/18 And all the birds of the sky that were
nestling in it are the strength of the earth and of the nations and
of all tongues unto the ends of the earth; and all the provinces
serve thee. 22/19 Moreover that tree had grown tall, and drew
nigh to heaven, and its extent to touch the clouds: thou, O king,
hast been exalted above all the men that were upon the face of
the whole earth. Thine heart has been exalted in pride and
strength against the Holy One and his messengers. Thy works
were seen as having made desolate the house of the living God
for the sins of the sanctified people. 23/20 And the vision which
thou sawest, because a messenger was sent in strength from the
Lord and because he said to remove and cut down the tree, the
judgment of the great God shall come upon thee. 24/21 And the
Most High and his messengers are running down upon thee.
25/22 They will lead thee away into prison, and send thee into a
desert place. 26/23 And the root of the tree that was left, since it
was not plucked up by the root, the place of thy throne will be
preserved for thee for a season and an hour. Behold, they are
preparing against thee, and shall scourge thee, and shall bring
upon thee those things which were judged. 27/24 The Lord lives
in heaven, and his power is on all the earth. Beseech him
concerning thy sins! and redeem all thine iniquities with alms!
that clemency may be given thee, and that thou mayest live long
upon the throne of thy kingdom, and lest he destroy thee. Love
these words! for my word is exact, and thy time is full. 28/25
And at the completion of the words, Nabuchodonosor, as he
heard the judgment of the vision, kept the words in his heart.
29/26 And after twelve months the king with all his glory
walked upon the walls of the city, and passed by upon its
towers. 30/27 And he answered and said, This is Babylon the
great, which I have built, and it shall be called the house of my
kingdom, by the strength of my might, for the honour of my
glory. 31/28 And at the completion of his word, he heard a voice
from heaven, saying, O king Nabuchodonosor, to thee it is
spoken: the kingdom of Babylon has been taken away from thee
and is given to another man which is despised in thy house.
Behold, I set him over thy kingdom. And he shall take thy
power and thy glory and thy luxury so that thou mightest know
that the God of heaven has power in the kingdom of men, and
he shall give it to whomsoever he will. And until the rising of
the sun, another king shall rejoice in thy house, and he shall lay
hold on thy glory and thy strength and thy power. 32/29 And the
messengers shall pursue thee seven years, and thou shalt in no
wise be seen, neither shalt thou in any wise speak with any man.
They shall feed thee with grass as an ox, and thy pasture shall be
of the green herb of the earth. Behold, instead of thy glory they
shall bind thee, and another shall have both the house of thy
luxury, and thy kingdom. 33/30 And until the morning all things
shall be accomplished upon thee, O Nabuchodonosor king of
Babylon, and not one of all these things shall fail. 33a I,
Nabuchodonosor, king of Babylon, was bound seven years.
They fed me with grass as an ox, and I ate of the green herb of
the earth. And after seven years I gave my soul to supplication.
And I intreated before the face of the Lord the God of heaven
concerning my sins, and I besought the great God of gods
concerning my ignorances. 33b And my hairs became as wings
of an eagle, my nails as the claws of a lion. My flesh and my
heart were changed. I walked naked with the wild beasts of the
earth. I saw a dream, and suspicions have taken hold upon me.
And after a time a great sleep took me, and a slumber fell upon
me. 34/31 And at the completion of seven years, my time of
redemption came. And my sins and my ignorances were full
before the God of heaven, and I besought the great God of gods
concerning my ignorances. And, behold, one messenger called
me out of heaven, saying, O Nabuchodonosor, serve the Holy
God of heaven! and give glory to the Most High! The kingdom
of thy nation is given back to thee. 35 36/33 At that time my
kingdom was restored to me, and my glory was given back to
me. 37/34 I give thanks to the Most High, and I praise him that
created the heaven and the earth and the seas and the rivers and
all things in them. I confess and praise, for he is God of gods,
and Lord of lords, and King of kings; for he does signs and
wonders, and changes seasons and times, taking away the
kingdom of kings, and setting others in place instead of them.
37a From henceforth I will serve him, and for fear of him
trembling has taken hold upon me. And I praise all his saints,
for the gods of the nations have not strength within themselves
to turn the kingdom of a king to another king, and to kill and to
make alive, and to do signs and wonders, great and terrible, and
to change very great matters as the God of heaven did in me.
And great matters did he change upon me. All the days of my
kingdom I will offer sacrifices for my soul to the Most High for
a sweet-smelling savour to the Lord, and that which is pleasing
before him I will do, I and my people, my nation, and my
provinces which are in my power. And as many as have spoken
against the God of heaven, and as many as shall be found
speaking anything, these will I condemn to death. 37b Then
Nabuchodonosor the king wrote a circular letter to all, according
to place, to nations and provinces and tongues, to all dwelling in
all the provinces in generations and generations, saying, Praise
the Lord God of heaven! and gloriously offer sacrifice and
offering to him! I, king of kings, gloriously give him thanks,
that thus did he with me. On the same day he set me upon my
throne and my power and my kingdom, I laid hold on my
people, and my majesty was restored to me. 37c/1-3 King
Nabuchodonosor, to all the nations and all the provinces and all
who dwell in them; Peace be multiplied to you in every season.
And now I will shew you the deeds which the great God did
with me. Moreover, it seemed good to me to shew you and your
wise men that he is God, and his wonders are great, his
kingdom is royal for ever, his power is from generations to
generations. And he sent forth letters concerning all things
which were done to him in his kingdom, to all the nations which
were under his kingdom.
Daniel 5
5:0 Baltasar the king made a great feast on the day of the
dedication of his royal dwellings, and he called two thousand
men of his nobles. On that day Baltasar, being lifted up with
wine, and boasting, praised all the molten and graven gods of
the nations in his place. And to the most high God he gave not
praise. In the same night came forth fingers as of a man, and
inscribed upon the wall of his house, on the plaster in front of
the lamps: Mane, Phares, Thekel. Now the interpretation of
them is: Mane; it has been counted, Phares; it has been
removed, Thekel; it has been established. 1 Baltasar the king
made a great portion for his companions, and he drank wine. 2
And his heart was lifted up, and he said to bring the the gold and
silver vessels of the house of God, which Nabuchodonosor his
father brought from Jerusalem, and to pour wine in them for his
companions. 3 And it was brought, and they drank with them. 4
And they blessed their idols made with hands, and they did not
bless the eternal God who has power over their spirit. 5 In that
same hour came forth fingers as of a man's hand, and wrote
upon the wall of his house, on the plaster in front of the light
before the king Baltasar. And he saw a hand writing. 6 And his
appearance was changed, and fears and suspicions hastened
upon him. Therefore the king hasted, and rose up, and beheld
that writing, and his friends boasted round about. 7 And the king
cried with a loud voice to call the enchanters and sorcerers and
Chaldeans and soothsayers, to tell the interpretation of the
writing. And they came to the spectacle to behold the writing.
And as for the interpretation of the writing, they were not able
to interpret to the king. Then the king expounded an ordinance,
saying, Any man who shall shew the interpretation of the
writing, he will array him in purple, and put on him a golden
chain, and to him shall be given power over the third part of the
kingdom. 8 And the enchanters and sorcerers and soothsayers
came in, and no one was able to tell the interpretation of the
writing. 9 Then the king called the queen concerning the sign,
and he shewed her how great it is, and that no man is able to tell
the king the interpretation of the writing. 10 Then the queen
reminded him concerning Daniel who was of the captivity of
Judea. 11 And she said to the king, The man was endued with
knowledge, and wise, and superior to all the wise men of
Babylon, 12 and a holy spirit is in him. And in the days of thy
father the king, he shewed burdensome interpretations to
Nabuchodonosor thy father. 13 Then Daniel was brought in to
the king. And the king answered and said to him, 14 15 16 O
Daniel, art thou able to shew me the interpretation of the
writing? And I will array thee in purple, and put on thee a
golden chain, and thou shalt have power over the third part of
my kingdom. 17 Then Daniel stood in front of the writing, and
read. And thus he answered the king, saying, This is the writing:
it has been counted, it was reckoned, it has been removed. And
the writing hand stood still. And this is the interpretation of
them. 18 19 20 21 22 23 O king, thou madest a portion for thy
friends, and thou didst drink wine. And as for the vessels of the
house of the living God, it was brought to thee, and ye drank
with them, thou and thy nobles. And ye praised all the idols
made with the hands of men, and ye did not bless the living
God. And thy spirit is in his hand, and he gave thee thy
kingdom, and thou didst not bless him nor praise him. 24 25 26
This is the interpretation of the writing: the time of thy kingdom
has been counted; thy kingdom ceases. 27 Thy kingdom has
been cut short and finished; 28 to the Medes and to the Persians
it is given. 29 Then Baltasar the king clothed Daniel in purple,
and put on him a golden chain, and gave him power over the
third part of his kingdom. 30 And the interpretation came upon
Baltasar the king. And the kingdom has been removed from the
Chaldeans, and it was given to the Medes and to the Persians.
Daniel 6
6:1/5:31 And Artaxerxes of the Medes took the kingdom, and
Darius was full of days and glorious in old age. 2/1 And he set a
hundred and twenty-seven satraps over all his kingdom, 3/2 and
over them, their three chief men. And one of the three men was
Daniel, 4/3 having power over all in the kingdom. And Daniel
was clothed in purple, and great and glorious before Darius the
king, as he was glorious, and endued with knowledge, and
prudent, and there was a holy spirit in him, and he was
prospering in the affairs of the king which he did. Then the king
determined to set Daniel over all his kingdom, and the two men
whom he had set in place with him, and a hundred and twenty-
seven satraps. 5/4 Now when the king determined to set Daniel
over all his kingdom, then among themselves the two young
men determined on a counsel and device, speaking one to
another, since they found no sin nor ignorance against Daniel
for which they shall accuse him to the king. 6/5 And they said,
Come, let us establish a restrictive decree against ourselves, that
no man shall intreat a petition, nor shall in any wise vow a vow
of any god for thirty days, save of Darius the king, or else he
shall die; that they might overcome Daniel before the king and
that he might be cast into the den of lions: for they knew that
Daniel prays and beseeches the Lord his God thrice in the day.
7/6 Then came those men, and said before the king, 8/7 We
established a restrictive decree, and a statute, that every man
who shall vow a vow, or intreat any petition of any god for
thirty days, save of Darius the king, shall be cast into the den of
lions. 9/8 And they intreated the king that he might establish the
restrictive decree and change it not: for they knew that Daniel
prays and beseeches thrice in the day; that he might be
overcome through the king and cast into the den of lions. 10/9
And thus king Darius established and confirmed it. 11/10 But
Daniel, knowing the restrictive decree which he established
against him, opened windows in his upper chamber toward
Jerusalem, and fell on his face thrice in the day as he did before,
and besought the Lord. 12/11 And they watched Daniel, and
overtook him praying thrice in the day, every day. 13/12 Then
these men made intercession to the king, and said, O King
Darius, hast thou not determined a restrictive decree that no man
shall vow a vow nor intreat a petition of any god for thirty days,
save of thee, O king, or else he shall be cast into the den of
lions? And the king answered and said to them, The word is
exact, and the restrictive decree shall remain. 13a/12a And they
said to him, we adjure thee by the decrees of the Medes and
Persians that thou change not the ordinance, nor respect the
person, and that thou diminish not any of the things that were
spoken, and punish the man who continued not in this restrictive
decree. And he said, Thus will I do, as ye say, and it has
established this for me. 14/13 And they said, Behold, we found
Daniel thy friend praying and beseeching the face of his God
thrice in the day. 15/14 And grieving, the king said that Daniel
was to be cast into the den of lions, according to the restrictive
decree which he established against him. Then the king was
exceedingly grieved for Daniel, and he helped to deliver him
from the hands of the satraps until the setting of the sun. 16/15
And he was not able to deliver him from them. 17/16 But Darius
the king cried out and said to Daniel, Thy God whom thou
servest continually thrice in the day, he will deliver thee out of
the hand of the lions until the morning. Take courage! 18/17
Then Daniel was cast into the den of lions, and a stone was
brought and laid on the mouth of the den. And the king sealed it
with his ring and with the rings of his nobles, that Daniel might
not be taken away from them, nor the king draw him up out of
the den. 19/18 Then the king returned to his royal dwellings,
and passed the night fasting, and he was grieving for Daniel.
Then the God of Daniel, making provision for him, shut the
mouths of the lions, and they did not trouble Daniel. 20/19 And
king Darius rose up early in the morning, and he took with him
the satraps, and went and stood at the mouth of the den of lions.
21/20 Then the king called Daniel with a loud voice, with
weeping, saying, O Daniel, dost thou surely live? and has thy
God, whom thou servest continually, saved thee from the lions,
so they have not brought thee to nothing? 22/21 Then Daniel
heard the loud voice and said, O king, I am yet alive. 23/22 And
God has saved me from the lions: because righteousness was
found in me before him; and moreover before thee, O king,
neither ignorance nor sin was found in me. But thou hast
hearkened to men that deceive kings, and thou hast cast me into
the den of lions for destruction. 24/23 Then all the powers were
gathered together, and saw Daniel, how the lions did not trouble
him. 25/24 Then those two men that bore witness against
Daniel, they and their wives and their children, were cast to the
lions; and the lions slew them and crushed their bones. 26/25
Then Darius wrote to all the nations and provinces and tongues,
who dwell in all his land, saying, 27/26 Let all the men which
are in my kingdom bow themselves and serve the God of
Daniel! for he is God, abiding and living for generations of
generations, for ever. 28/27 I, Darius, shall be bowing myself
and serving him all my days, for the idols made with hands are
not able to save, as the God of Daniel has redeemed Daniel.
29/28 And king Darius was added to his family. And Daniel was
set over the kingdom of Darius, and Cyrus the Persian took his
kingdom.
Daniel 7
7:1 In the first year of the reign of Baltasar of the province of
Babylonia, Daniel saw a vision in his head upon his bed. Then
Daniel wrote the vision which he saw in a sum of words, saying,
2 Upon my bed I beheld in my sleep by night and, behold, four
winds of heaven fell into the great sea. 3 And four wild beasts
came up out of the sea, differing one from the other. 4 The first
was as a lioness, having wings as an eagle's: I beheld until her
wings were plucked, and she was lifted up from the earth, and
she stood on man's feet, and a human heart was given to her. 5
And, behold, after her another wild beast, having the likeness of
a she-bear. And she was set upon the one rib, and three ribs were
in her mouth. And thus she said, Arise! devour much flesh! 6
And after these I beheld another wild beast, as a leopardess: and
four wings stretched forth above him, and four heads were given
to the wild beast, and a tongue was given to him. 7 But after
these I beheld in a vision of the night a fourth, terrible, wild
beast. And the fear of him was exceeding in strength, having
great iron teeth, devouring and grinding, trampling round about
with the feet, dealing differently from all the wild beasts before
him. Moreover he had ten horns, 8 and many counsels among
his horns. And, behold, one other horn was grown up in the
midst of them, small among his horns, and three of the first
horns were withered by it. And, behold, there were eyes as
human eyes in this horn, and a mouth speaking great things, and
it made war against the saints. 9 I beheld until thrones were set,
and the Ancient of days sat, having a cloak as snow, and the hair
of his head as clean white wool, and the throne as a flame of
fire. 10 And there went out before his face a river of fire. A
thousand thousands waited upon him, and ten thousand ten
thousands stood by him. And a judgment-seat was set, and
books were opened. 11 I beheld then the voice of the great
words which the horn spoke. And the wild beast was crucified
on a plank, and his body perished and was given unto the
burning of fire. 12 And he removed them that were round about
him from their power. And a time of life was given to them until
a time and a season. 13 I beheld in a vision of the night, and,
behold, he came on the clouds of heaven as the Son of man, and
he was present as the Ancient of days, and they that stood by
were present for him. 14 And power was given to him, and all
the nations of the earth according to their races, and all the glory
serving him. And his power is a power everlasting, which shall
never be taken away, and his kingdom, which shall never be
corrupted. 15 And I Daniel, grieved by these things in the vision
of the night, 16 drew near to one of them that stood by, and
sought of him the exactness of all these things. And he answers
and speaks to me, and he has manifested to me the judgment of
the words. 17 These great wild beasts are four kingdoms which
shall perish from the earth. 18 And the saints of the Most High
shall take the kingdom and possess the kingdom for ever, even
for ever and ever. 19 Then I desired to search out exactly
concerning the fourth wild beast that was destroying all, and
exceedingly terrible; and behold his teeth of iron and his claws
of brass, devouring all round about, and trampling with the feet;
20 and concerning his ten horns which were upon his head, and
the other one which was grown besides: and three fell because
of it; and that horn had eyes and a mouth speaking great things;
and the appearance of it exceeded the others. 21 And I
considered that horn, raising up war against the saints and
putting them to flight 22 until the Ancient of days came: and he
gave the judgment to the saints of the Most High, and the time
was given, and the saints possessed the kingdom. 23 And it was
said unto me concerning the fourth wild beast, that he shall be a
fourth kingdom upon the earth, which shall surpass above all the
earth, and shall trouble it, and shall grind it down. 24 And the
ten horns of the kingdom are ten kings; they shall stand up. And
the other king shall stand up after these, and shall surpass in evil
above the first, and shall humble three kings. 25 And he shall
speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the
saints of the Most High, and shall undertake to change times
and law. And all shall be delivered into his hands until a time
and times and until half a time. 26 And the judgment shall sit.
And they shall destroy the power, and shall determine to defile
and to destroy until the end. 27 And he gave the kingdom and
the power, and their magnificence, and the rule of all kingdoms
which were under heaven to the holy people of the Most High,
to reign over an everlasting kingdom; and all the powers shall
be subjected to him and shall obey him 28 until the word's
overthrow. I Daniel, was exceedingly compassed about with
amazement, and my condition surpassed me. And I fixed the
word in my heart.
Daniel 8
8:1 In the third year of the reign of Baltasar, there was a vision
which I saw, I Daniel, after I saw the first. 2 And I saw in the
vision of my dream, when I was in the city Susa, which is in the
province Elymais, when I was yet at the gate Ælam, 3 I looked
up and saw one great ram standing over against the gate. And he
had horns, and the one was higher than the other, and the higher
one came up. 4 Then after these I saw the ram butting toward
the east and toward the north and toward the west and toward
the south. And no wild beasts stood before him, and there was
none to deliver out of his hands. And he did as he would, and
was exalted. 5 And I considered and, behold, a he-goat of the
goats came from the west over the face of the earth, and he
touched not the earth. And one horn of the he-goat was between
his eyes. 6 And he came against the ram that had the horns,
which I had seen standing at the gate, and he ran upon him in
fierce anger. 7 And I saw him drawing near to the ram. And he
was wroth with him, and he smote and broke his two horns. And
there was no longer any strength in the ram to stand before the
he-goat. And he tore him asunder on the earth, and broke him,
and there was none to deliver the ram from the he-goat. 8 And
the he-goat of the goats prevailed exceedingly. And when he
prevailed, his great horn was broken, and four other horns came
up after it, toward the four winds of heaven. 9 And out of one of
them was grown one strong horn. And he prevailed and smote to
the south and to the east and to the north. 10 And he was exalted
unto the stars of heaven. And he was dashed down upon the
earth by the stars, and by them he was trampled 11 until the
chief captain shall deliver the captivity. And by him the
mountains of old were dashed down, and their place and
sacrifice were removed; and he laid it even to the ground upon
the earth. And he prospered, and it came to pass: and the
sanctuary shall be made desolate. 12 And the sins were upon the
sacrifice, and righteousness was cast down to the ground; and he
wrought and prospered. 13 And I heard another saint speaking,
and the other saint said to the Phelmouni that was speaking,
How long shall the vision stand, and the sacrifice that was taken
away, and the sin of desolation that was offered; and how long
shall the sanctuaries be made desolate for trampling? 14 And he
said to him, Until evening and morning, two thousand three
hundred days, and the sanctuary shall be cleansed. 15 And it
came to pass in my seeing it, I Daniel sought to understand the
vision. And, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of
a man. 16 And I heard the voice of a man in the midst of the
Ulai, and he called, and said, Gabriel, instruct that man in the
vision! And the man cried out and said, The vision concerning
that ordinance. 17 And he came and stood near where I stood:
and in his coming, I was troubled, and fell upon my face. And
he said to me, Understand, O son of man! for this vision is yet
for an hour of time. 18 And as he was speaking with me, I lay
upon my face on the ground: and he touched me, and raised me
up to my place. 19 And he said to me, Behold, I tell thee what
things shall be in the last of the wrath upon the sons of thy
people, for it shall abide yet for the hour of the time of the end.
20 The ram which thou sawest, that had the horns, is the king of
the Medes and Persians. 21 And the he-goat of the goats is the
king of the Greeks: and the great horn which is between his
eyes, he is the first king. 22 And the four horns that were broken
and came up after it are four kings of his nation; they shall not
arise according to his strength. 23 And in their last kingdom,
filling up their sins, there shall arise a king bold in countenance,
understanding dark speeches. 24 And his strength shall be
established, yet not in his strength. And he shall corrupt
wonderfully, and prosper, and work. And he shall corrupt
mighty men and people of the saints. 25 And his thought shall
be against the saints, and the lie shall prosper in his hands. And
his heart shall be exalted. And by craft he shall utterly destroy
many: and upon the destruction of men he shall stand; and he
shall make a congregation by hand, and shall sell it. 26 The
evening and morning vision was found in truth. And now the
vision is shut up, for it is yet for many days. 27 I Daniel was
sick many days, and I rose up and was occupied again in royal
affairs. And I was faint over the vision, and there was no one
that considered it.
Daniel 9
9:1 In the first year of Darius, the son of Xerxes, from the
generation of the Medes, which Medes reigned over the
kingdom of the Chaldeans, 2 in the first year of his kingdom, I
Daniel understood by the books the number of the years after an
ordinance for the land came to Jeremias the prophet to raise up
seventy years for the fulfillment of the reproach of Jerusalem. 3
And I set my face unto the Lord God, to find prayer and mercy,
in fastings and sackcloth and ashes. 4 And I prayed to the Lord
God, and confessed, and said, Behold, O Lord, thou art the
great, and strong, and terrible God, keeping the covenant and
the mercy for them that love thee, and for them that keep thine
ordinances; 5 we have sinned, we have done unrighteously, we
have done ungodly, and we have departed from thee and
transgressed thy commandments and thy judgments: 6 and we
have not hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, to the things
which they spoke in thy name to our kings and our mighty men
and our fathers and to every nation on the earth. 7 To thee, O
Lord, belongs righteousness, and to us shame of face, as at this
day, to the men of Juda, and to them that dwell in Jerusalem,
and to all the people of Israel, to him that is nearest, and to him
that is farther off, in all the provinces into which thou hast
scattered them there, in the trespass wherein they have
trespassed before thee. 8 O Master, to us belongs shame of face,
and to our kings and mighty men, and to our fathers, for we
have sinned against thee. 9 To the Lord belong righteousness
and mercy, for we have departed from thee 10 and have not
hearkened unto the voice of the Lord our God, to follow thy law
which thou gavest before Moses and us through thy servants the
prophets. 11 And all Israel forsook thy law, and they have
departed from thee, so as not to hearken to thy voice. And there
came upon us the curse and the oath that is written in the law of
Moses the servant of God, for we have sinned against him. 12
And he established to us his ordinances, which he spoke against
us, and against our judges, which thou hast judged for us, to
bring upon us great evils, such as was not under heaven, as was
in Jerusalem. 13 According to the things that are written in the
covenant of Moses, all the evils came upon us. And we sought
not the face of the Lord our God, to depart from our sins, and to
understand thy righteousness, O Lord. 14 And the Lord God has
watched over the evils, and brought them upon us: for the Lord
our God is righteous in all things whatsoever he shall do, and
we have not hearkened unto his voice. 15 And now, O Master, O
Lord our God, who broughtest thy people out of Egypt with thy
high arm, and madest to thyself a name, as at this day; we have
sinned, we have been ignorant. 16 O Master, according to thy
righteousness, let thy wrath and thine anger be turned away
from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain! for by our sins and
by the ignorances of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people, O
Lord, are for a reproach among all that are round about us. 17
And now hearken, O Master, to the prayer of thy servant, and to
my supplications! And let thy face look upon thy desolate holy
mountain for the sake of thy servants, O Master! 18 Give heed,
O Lord, with thine ear! and hear me! Open thine eyes! and see
our desolation, and that of thy city on which thy name is called
upon it! For in our prayers before thee we pray not on the
ground of our righteousness, but because of thy mercy. 19 O
Lord, be merciful! O Lord, hear! and perform it! And delay not,
for the sake of thine own self, O Master, for thy name is called
upon thy city Sion, and upon thy people Israel. 20 And while I
was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sins and the sins
of my people Israel, and beseeching in prayers before the Lord
my God, and for the holy mountain of our God, 21 and while I
was yet speaking in my prayer, behold, the man whom I had
seen in my sleep at first, Gabriel, being brought quickly, drew
near to me in the hour of the evening sacrifice. 22 And he came
and spoke with me, and said, Daniel, I came forth now to shew
thee an understanding. 23 At the beginning of thy supplication
an ordinance came forth from the Lord, and I came to shew
thee; for thou art pitiable: and so understand the ordinance! 24
Seventy weeks were judged upon thy people and upon the city
Sion, for sin to be finished, and to make iniquities scarce, and to
blot out iniquities, and to understand the vision, and for
everlasting righteousness to be offered, and for the vision to be
finished, and to make glad the holy of holies. 25 And thou shalt
know, and understand, and rejoice; and thou shalt find
ordinances to answer; and thou shalt build Jerusalem, a city for
the Lord. 26 And after seven and seventy and sixty-two, the
anointing shall be removed, and shall not be; and a kingdom of
nations shall destroy the city and the sanctuary with the Christ:
and his end shall come with wrath, and he shall be warred upon
with war until the time of the end. 27 And the covenant shall
rule in many; and he shall return again, and it shall be rebuilt in
breadth and length, and at the end of times, and after seven and
seventy times and sixty-two years until the time of the end of
war; and the desolation shall be taken away in the covenant's
prevailing for many weeks. And at the end of the week the
sacrifice and the drink-offering shall be taken away, and on the
temple shall be the abomination of desolations until the end, and
the end shall be given unto the desolation.
Daniel 10
10:1 In the first year of Cyrus the king of the Persians, an
ordinance was shewn to Daniel, who was called the name
Baltasar. And true are the vision and the ordinance. And the
strong multitude shall understand the ordinance, and I
understood it in a vision. 2 In those days I Daniel was mourning
three weeks. 3 I ate no desirable bread, and no flesh or wine
entered into my mouth, neither did I anoint myself with oil, until
I had finished the three weeks of days. 4 And it came to pass on
the twenty-fourth day of the first month that I was on the bank
of the great river, which is Tigris. 5 And I lifted up mine eyes,
and saw, and, behold, one man clothed in fine linens, and girt
about the loins with fine linen, and out of the midst of him came
light. 6 And his body was as Tharsis, and his face as the
appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his
arms and feet as gleaming brass, and the sound of his speech as
the sound of a tumult. 7 And I Daniel saw this great vision: and
the men that were with me saw not this vision; and a mighty
fear fell upon them, and they fled in haste. 8 And I was left
alone, and saw this great vision, and there was no strength left
in me. And, behold, the spirit was turned toward me for
corruption, and I prevailed not. 9 And I heard not the sound of
his speech: I was fallen on my face upon the earth. 10 And,
behold, he brought his hand near to me, and he raised me up on
my knees, to the soles of my feet. 11 And he said to me, Daniel,
thou art a pitiable man. Understand the ordinances that I speak
to thee! and stand in thy place! for I am now sent to thee. And
when he spoke this ordinance unto me, I stood trembling. 12
And he said to me, Fear not, Daniel! for from the first day that
thou settest thy face to understand, and to humble thyself before
the Lord thy God, thy word was heard, and I came because of
thy word. 13 And the captain of the king of the Persians had
stood against me twenty-one days: and behold, Michael, one of
the chief princes, came to help me; and I left him there with the
captain of the king of the Persians. 14 And he said to me, I came
to shew thee what shall meet thy people in the last days, for the
vision is yet for days. 15 And when he spoke these ordinances
unto me, I set my face toward the ground and kept silent. 16
And, behold, as it were a likeness of a man's hand touched my
lips; and I opened my mouth, and spoke, and said to him that
stood before me, O Lord, even as the vision turned toward my
side, toward me, there was then no strength in me. 17 And how
shall the servant be able to speak with his Lord? And I am weak,
and there is no strength in me; and there was no spirit left in me.
18 And there touched me again as it were the appearance of a
man, and he strengthened me. 19 And he said to me, Thou art a
pitiable man. Fear not! be whole! quit thyself like a man! and be
strong! And when he spoke unto me, I was strengthened, and
said, Let my Lord speak! for he has strengthened me. 20 And he
said to me, Knowest thou why I came to thee? And now I will
return to strive with the captain of the king of the Persians: and I
went forth and, behold, a captain of the Greeks went in. 21 And
indeed I will shew thee the first ones in a register of truth: and
there was no helper with me for these, save Michael the
messenger.
Daniel 11
11:1 And in the first year of Cyrus the king, he told me to be
strong, and to quit myself like a man. 2 And now I came to shew
thee the truth. Behold, in Persia three kings have stood up in
opposition; and the fourth shall be rich with great riches above
all: and when he shall strengthen himself in his riches, he shall
rise up against every king of the Greeks. 3 And a mighty king
shall stand up, and rule over a great dominion, and do as he will.
4 And when he shall rise up, his kingdom shall be broken, and
divided to the four winds of heaven; not according to his
prowess, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his
kingdom shall be removed. And he shall teach others these
things. 5 And he shall strengthen the kingdom of Egypt. And
one of the mighty men shall prevail over him, and rule; his
power shall be a great power. 6 And at the end of the years he
shall lead them. And the king of Egypt shall enter into the
northern kingdom to make agreements. And he shall in no wise
prevail, for his arm shall not establish strength; and his arm
shall be numbed, and that of them which shall go with him. And
he shall abide for an hour. 7 And a plant shall arise out of his
root by himself. And the king of the north shall come against his
power, in his strength. And he shall make trouble. And he shall
prevail. 8 And he shall overthrow their gods with their molten
images, and their multitudes with their desirable vessels. And
they shall carry away the silver and the gold into captivity to
Egypt. And it shall be a year for the king of the north. 9 And he
shall enter into the kingdom of Egypt for days. And he shall
return to his own land. 10 And his son shall both be provoked,
and shall gather a congregation of a great multitude: and he
shall enter according to it. Haling them away, he shall pass by,
and return, and be very much provoked. 11 And the king of
Egypt shall be provoked to anger, and shall make war with the
king of the north. And the congregation shall be delivered into
his hands, 12 and he shall receive the congregation. And his
heart shall be exalted, and he shall trouble many, and by no
means shall he fear. 13 And the king of the north shall return,
and of the city shall he gather a congregation greater than the
first, according to the end of the time of the year. And he shall
enter into it against him with a great multitude and with much
wealth. 14 And in those times thoughts shall arise against the
king of Egypt. And he shall rebuild the things that are fallen
down of thy nation. And he shall arise to raise up the prophecy.
And they shall stumble. 15 And the king of the north shall
come. And he shall turn his spears. And he shall take the
fortified city. And the arms of the king of Egypt shall stand with
his mighty men. And there shall be no strength in him to
withstand him. 16 And he that comes in against him shall do
according to his will, and there shall be none that stands against
him. And he shall stand in the province. And all things shall be
accomplished in his hands. 17 And he shall set his face to come
upon all his work with violence. And he shall make agreements
with him. And he shall give him a daughter of man to corrupt
her. And she shall not obey, and shall not be. 18 And he shall set
his face toward the sea, and shall take many. And he shall return
the wrath of their reproach in an oath according to his reproach.
19 He shall turn his face to strengthen his province. And he shall
stumble and fall, and not be found. 20 And there shall arise out
of his root a plant of a kingdom unto the resurrection, a man that
smites the glory of a king. And in the last days shall he be
broken, but not in wrath, nor in war. 21 And a contemptible man
shall arise in his place, and the glory of a king shall not be given
to him. And he shall come suddenly. The king shall prevail by
his inheritance. 22 And the arms that were broken shall he break
before his face. 23 And with the covenant and the people
mustered with him, he shall make a lie. And against a strong
nation in a nation few in number, 24 suddenly shall he make the
city desolate. And he shall do what his fathers have not done,
nor his fathers' fathers. Plunder and spoils and riches shall he
give them. And against the strong city shall he take counsel.
And his devices shall be in vain. 25 And his strength and his
heart shall be raised up against the king of Egypt with a great
multitude; and the king of Egypt shall be provoked into war
with a very exceedingly strong multitude. And he shall not
stand, for he shall take counsel against him in his mind. 26 And
his cares shall consume him, and shall turn him back. And he
shall pass by, and shall hale them away, and many shall fall
down slain. 27 And two kings shall sup alone at the same place,
and at one table shall they devour; and they shall speak lies; but
they shall not prosper: for the end is yet for a time. 28 And he
shall return to his province with great riches. And his heart shall
act against the covenant of the Holy One. And he shall return to
his province 29 for a time. And he shall enter into Egypt. And
the last shall not be as the first. 30 And the Romans shall come,
and drive him out, and rebuke him. And he shall turn and be
provoked to anger against the covenant of the Holy One. And he
shall act, and shall turn and take counsel against them, because
they forsook the covenant of the Holy One. 31 And the arms
from him shall stand, and defile the fearful sanctuary, and
remove the sacrifice, and offer the abomination of desolation;
32 and in the sins of the covenant shall they defile among a hard
people. And the people that knows these things shall prevail,
and act. 33 And they of the nation that reflect shall understand
in many things. And they shall stumble by the sword, and shall
wax old by it and by captivity, and by plunder of days shall they
be stained. 34 And when they are broken, they shall gather a
little strength. And many shall be gathered together upon them,
upon the city, even many as by an inheritance. 35 And some of
them that understand shall take counsel to cleanse themselves,
and to be chosen, and to be cleansed until the time of the end,
for the time is yet for an hour. 36 And the king shall do
according to his will. And he shall be provoked to anger. And he
shall be exalted against every god, and against the God of gods
shall he speak extraordinary words. And he shall prosper until
the wrath be accomplished: for the end is coming to him. 37
And he shall by no means pay regard to the gods of his fathers,
nor shall he by any means pay regard to the desire of a woman:
for in every thing shall he be exalted, and to him strong nations
shall be subjected. 38 Against his place shall he move. And a
god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and
silver, and precious stone. And with desirable things 39 of the
cities shall he act. And into a strong fortress shall he come with
a strange god whomsoever he shall know. He shall multiply
glory. And he shall have dominion over it abundantly, and shall
divide the province freely. 40 And at the hour of the end the
king of Egypt shall lock horns with him: and the king of the
north shall be very much angered at him; with chariots and with
many horses and with many ships, so shall he enter into the
province of Egypt. 41 And he shall come into my province. 42
And in the province of Egypt, there shall not be in it one who
escapes. 43 And he shall lay hold on the place of gold, and the
place of silver, and all the desire of Egypt. And Libyans and
Ethiopians shall be in his multitude. 44 And a report from the
east and the north shall trouble him. And he shall come forth
with strong wrath and sword to destroy utterly, and to kill many.
45 And he shall set up his tabernacle then in the midst of the
seas and the desired holy mountain. And the hour of his end
shall come, and there shall be no helper for him.
Daniel 12
12:1 And in that hour shall Michael pass by, the great messenger
that stands over the sons of thy people. That shall be the day of
tribulation, such as was not since they were born until that day.
And in that day all the people shall be exalted, whosoever shall
be found written in the book. 2 And many of them that sleep in
the breadth of the earth shall arise, some to life everlasting, and
some to reproach, and some to dispersion and shame
everlasting. 3 And the wise shall shine as the lights of heaven,
and they that strengthen my words as the stars of heaven for
ever and ever. 4 And thou, Daniel, hide the ordinances! and seal
the book! until the time of the end, until many become mad and
the land be filled with iniquity. 5 And I Daniel saw, and, behold,
two others stood, one on this side of the river, and one on that
side. 6 And I said to the one that was above, that was clothed in
the fine linens, When therefore shall be the end of the wonderful
things which thou hast told me, and the purification of these? 7
And I heard him that was clothed in the fine linens, who was
over the water of the river, saying, Until the time of the end.
And he lifted up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven,
and sware by the God that lives for ever, that, At a time, and
times, and half a time, shall be the end of the hands of release of
the holy people, and all these things shall be finished. 8 And I
heard, but, beyond the time itself, I understood not. And I said,
O Lord, what is the interpretation of this word? and whose are
these parables? 9 And he said to me, Depart quickly, Daniel! for
the ordinances are veiled and sealed until 10 many be tried and
sanctified, and the sinners sin. And none of the sinners shall in
any wise understand, but they that understand shall give heed 11
from the time that the continual sacrifice is removed and the
abomination of desolation is prepared to be offered a thousand
two hundred and ninety days. 12 Blessed is he that abides. And
he shall gather for a thousand three hundred and thirty-five
days. 13 And go thou! rest! for there are yet days and hours for
the fulfillment of the end; and thou shalt rest, and thou shalt rise
again unto thy glory at the end of the days.
Daniel 13 Susanna
13:1 2 3 4 5 6 And judgments from other cities came unto them.
7/8 These men, seeing a woman beautiful in countenance, the
wife of their brother of the sons of Israel, whose name was
Susanna, the daughter of Chelcias, the wife of Joakim, walking
in her husband's garden in the afternoon, and coveting her, 9
they perverted their mind, and turned away their eyes, so as not
to look unto heaven, nor to remember righteous judgments.
10/11 And both were vexed about her, but one to another
feigned not to know the evil that possessed them concerning her,
nor did the woman know this matter. 12 And when it was dawn,
they came and stole away one from another, hasting to see who
may appear to her first, and may speak unto her. 13/14 And,
behold, this woman was walking according to her custom. And
the one of the elders had come, and, behold, the other came, and
one examined the other, saying, Why camest thou forth thus at
dawn, and tookest me not? And they confessed each man his
pain, one to another. 15 16 17 18 19 And one said to the other,
Let us go to her. And they agreed, and drew near to her, and
pressed upon her. 20 21 22 And the Jewess said to them, I know
that if I do this thing, it is death unto me: and if I do it not, I
shall not escape your hands. 23 But it is better for me to fall into
your hands, and not do it, than to sin in the sight of the Lord. 24
25 26 27 28 So the lawless men returned, threatening within
themselves, and laying wait that they might put her to death.
And they came unto the congregation of the city where they
sojourned, and all the sons of Israel that were there sat in
council. 29 And the two elders and judges stood up and said,
Send for Susanna, the daughter of Chelcias, who is the wife of
Joakim! So immediately they called her. 30 And as the woman
came with her father and mother, there came even her
menservants and maidservants, being five hundred in number,
and the four children of Susanna. 31 Now the woman was very
delicate, 32 and the lawless men commanded to unveil her, that
they may be filled with the lust of her beauty. 33 And all her
friends and all as many as knew her wept. 34 Then the elders
and judges stood up and laid their hands upon her head. 35 But
her heart trusted in the Lord her God. And she lifted up her head
and wept in herself, saying, 35a/42-44 O Lord, everlasting God,
that knowest all things before they be: Thou knowest that I have
not done the things which these lawless men wickedly devised
against me. And the Lord heard her supplication. 36 Now the
two elders said, We were walking in her husband's garden, 37
and compassing a furlong, we saw this woman resting with a
man. And we stood and beheld them companying together. 38
And they knew not that we stood by. Then we agreed one with
another, saying, Let us learn who these are. 39 And we drew
near and recognized her, but the young man fled, his nakedness
covered. 40 But having taken hold of this woman, we asked her
who the man was, 41 but she did not tell us who he was: these
things do we testify. And as they were elders and judges of the
people, all the congregation believed them. 42 43 44/45 And
behold, a messenger of the Lord, and that woman being brought
forth to be destroyed. And the messenger, even as he was
commanded, gave a spirit of understanding to a younger man,
which was Daniel. 46 47 48 So Daniel parted the multitude, and
stood in the midst of them, and said, Are ye such fools, ye sons
of Israel, that without examination or knowledge of the plain
truth ye have answered a daughter of Israel? 49 50 51 And now
separate me them one far from another! that I may enquire of
them. 52 And when they were separated, Daniel said to the
congregation, Now regard not that these men are elders, saying,
They would never lie. But I shall examine them according to the
things that fall to my notice. And he called one of them, and
they brought the elder to the younger, and Daniel said to him,
Hear! Hear! O thou that art waxen old from days of wickedness.
Now are come thy sins which thou hast committed before. 53
Thou wast entrusted to hear and to judge judgments bringing
death: and thou hast condemned the innocent, and thou didst
release the guilty; albeit the Lord says, The innocent and
righteous shalt thou not slay. 54 Now therefore, under what tree
and in what place of the garden hast thou seen them, being with
one another? And the ungodly man said, Under a mastick tree.
55 And the younger man said, Plainly thou hast lied against
thine own soul; for the messenger of the Lord shall rend thy
soul to-day. 56 So he put this man aside, and commanded to
bring him the other, and said also to this man, Why is thy seed
perverse as that of Sidon, and why is it not as the beauty of
Juda? Vile lust has deceived thee. 57 And thus have ye dealt
with the daughters of Israel, and they for fear companied with
you: but the daughter of Juda endured not your sickness, to bear
it in lawlessness. 58 Now therefore, tell me! Under what tree
and in what place of the garden didst thou take them
companying together? And he said, Under an holm tree. 59 And
Daniel said, O sinner, now the messenger of the Lord stands,
having the sword, until the people shall utterly destroy you, that
he may saw thee asunder. 60 And all the congregation cried to
the younger man, 61 as out of their own mouth, he established
them both as false witnesses of one mind. 62 And as the law
expressly commands, they did to them as they wickedly devised
to do against their sister. And they put them to silence, and
brought them forth, and cast them into a valley. Then the
messenger of the Lord cast fire through the midst of them, and
the innocent blood was saved in that day. 63 Therefore the
younger, beloved ones are Jacob in their simplicity. And we
ourselves, let us keep unto younger, mighty sons. For the
younger men shall be godly, and a spirit of knowledge and
understanding shall be in them for ever and ever.
Daniel 14 Bel and the Dragon
14:0 Of the prophecy of Ambacum, the son of Jesus, of the tribe
of Levi. 1 2 There was a certain man, a priest, whose name was
Daniel the son of Abal, a companion of the king of Babylon. 3
And there was an idol, Bel, which the Babylonians worshipped.
And he consumed for him every day twelve great measures of
fine flour and four sheep and six firkins of oil. 4 And the king
worshipped him, and every day the king went and bowed before
him. But Daniel prayed to the Lord. 5 And the king said to
Daniel, Why dost not thou bow down to Bel? And Daniel said to
the king, I worship none but the Lord God, who has created the
heaven and the earth, and has dominion over all flesh. 6 And the
king said to him, Is this therefore not a god? seest thou not how
much is spent upon him every day? 7 And Daniel said to him,
Not so: let no man deceive thee! For this indeed is earthen
within, and brazen without. And I swear to thee by the Lord
God of gods, that this has never eaten anything. 8 So the king
was wroth, and called them that kept the charge of the temple,
and he said to them, Shew me him that eats the things prepared
for Bel! But if not, ye shall die, or Daniel, who affirms them not
to be eaten by him. But they said, Bel himself is he that devours
them. 9 Then Daniel said to the king, Let it be so! Except I shall
shew that Bel is not he that devours these things, I shall die, and
all they that shall be with me. Now the priests to Bel were
seventy, beside women and children. 10 So they brought the
king into the idol's temple. 11 And the meats were set before the
king and Daniel. And wine was mingled, and brought in, and set
before Bel. And Daniel said, Thou thyself seest that these things
are laid up, O king. Thou therefore set a seal upon the keys of
the temple when it shall be shut! 12 13 And the word pleased
the king. 14 So Daniel commanded them that were with him to
cast them all out of the temple and strew the whole temple with
ashes; none of them that were outside it knew. And then he
commanded to seal the temple with the ring of the king, and
with the rings of certain glorious priests: and it was so. 15-16
And it came to pass on the morrow that they came to the place.
Now through false windows the priests of Bel had come in and
devoured all things which were set before Bel, and had drunk up
the wine. 17 And Daniel said, Look upon your seals! whether
they remain, O ye men and priests. And also thou, O king, look
about thee! lest anything become inharmonious with thee. And
they found it as the seal was, and they cast away the seal. 18
And they opened the doors, and saw all things that were set
before him spent, and the tables empty. And the king rejoiced,
and said to Daniel, Great is Bel, and with him is no guile. 19
And Daniel laughed exceedingly, and said to the king, Come!
See the guile of the priests! And Daniel said, O king, of whom
are these footsteps? 20 And the king said, Of men and women
and children. 21 And he came upon the house in which the
priests were dwelling, and he found the meats of Bel, and the
wine. And Daniel shewed the king the false windows through
which the priests entering in, spent the things that were set
before Bel. 22 And the king brought them out of the temple of
Bel, and delivered them to Daniel. And the expense that was for
him gave he to Daniel, but Bel he overthrew. 23 And in that
same place there was a dragon, and the Babylonians worshipped
him. 24 And the king said to Daniel, Wilt thou also say that this
is of brass? Behold, he lives, and eats, and drinks. Bow before
him! 25 And Daniel said, O king, give me leave! and I shall slay
the dragon without rod or iron. 26 And the king yielded to him,
and said to him, It is given thee. 27 And Daniel took fat and
hair, and thirty pounds of pitch, and did seethe them together,
and made a lump thereof. And he cast it into the mouth of the
dragon. And having eaten, he burst in sunder. And him he
shewed the king, saying, Do not ye worship these things, O
king? 28 And all they of the province were gathered together
against Daniel, and said, The king is become a Jew; he
overthrew Bel, and slew the dragon. 29 30 And the king having
seen that the multitude of the province was gathered together
against him, called his companions, and said, I give up Daniel to
destruction. 31-32 Now there was a den in which seven lions
were fed, to which the traitors of the king were delivered. And
two bodies of the condemned were provided for them every day.
And the multitudes cast Daniel into that den, that he might be
devoured, and not even obtain burial. And Daniel was in the den
six days. 33 And it came to pass on the sixth day, that there was
Ambacum, having loaves that were broken in a bowl, in pottage,
and a jar of mingled wine. And he went into the plain unto the
reapers. 34 And a messenger of the Lord spoke to Ambacum,
saying, These things saith the Lord God to thee; Carry the
dinner that thou hast to Daniel, into the den of lions in Babylon!
35 And Ambacum said, O Lord God, I have not seen Babylon,
and I know not where the den is. 36 And the messenger of the
Lord took hold of him, of Ambacum, by the hair of his head,
and set him down over the den that was in Babylon. 37 And
Ambacum said to Daniel, Arise and eat the dinner which the
Lord God has sent thee! 38 And Daniel said, For the Lord God,
that forsakes not them which love him, has remembered me. 39
And Daniel did eat. Then the messenger of the Lord set
Ambacum in the place whence he had taken him the same day.
And the Lord God remembered Daniel. 40 And after these
things the king went forth, mourning for Daniel. And he
stooping down, and looking into the den, sees him sitting. 41
And the king cried out and said, Great is the Lord God, and
there is none other but he. 42 And the king brought Daniel out
of the den, and cast them that were the cause of his destruction
into the den, in the sight of Daniel: and they were devoured.
