VIEW A VIEW B

The Luna Tank is a super swingy, summery knit tank top that is comfortable and
quick to sew. Luna features a knit binding finish on the neck and arm openings.

Fabric Recommendations
Four-way stretch knits with at least 20% stretch horizontally and vertically (see the stretch chart on page 3).
The Luna Tank works best in a lightweight knit fabric with plenty of drape like bamboo jersey, rayon jersey,
modal jersey, lightweight cotton jersey, ITY or rib knits.

SEWING WITH KNIT FABRICS 3

Grab a 5” (13 cm) square of fabric. Next to a ruler, stretch the fabric until it feels fully stretched out, but not
strained. Take note of the stretched measurement. What percentage did it stretch? Repeat for the cross-grain

Sewing With Knit Fabrics

If this is your first time sewing with knit fabrics, you are in good hands!

Here are some tips for sewing with knits:

• Use a ‘jersey’, ‘ballpoint’ or ‘stretch’ needle. This is an absolute must. If you try to sew knits with a

regular needle, it may break the elastic fibers in your fabric and/or skip stitches when sewing. Stretch

needles have a duller, ballpoint tip, preventing them from tearing the fibers in your knits.

Example of skipped stitches when using a zig-zag

• Don’t pull when sewing. It is possible to stretch knits out while sewing, resulting in wavy seams and

difficulties getting seams to lie flat. Let the machine feed the fabric through and resist the urge to pull it

while sewing. If you are experiencing wavy seams despite gentle handling, you may need to let up on your

presser foot pressure or use a walking foot to allow the fabric through more easily.

• Use a zig-zag stitch. If you use a straight stitch to sew knits, any seams under stress when stretched will

break. Zig-zag stitches allow the seams to stretch and move with your body. Some areas will need greater

stretch, therefore they need a wider zig-zag.

• You don’t need a serger/overlocker. A serger certainly makes sewing knits a breeze and offers a nice

finish on the inside but it is not necessary. This pattern can be sewn with a combination of serger, sewing

machine, and/or coverstitch.

Grab a pair of scissors and some clear scotch tape. Trim the top and right borders off of each page. Tape

together the pages from left to right, matching the triangles and numbers. The thin border lines on each page

should butt up against each other (not overlap). Tape the rows together, completing the pattern.

HEMMING 9

Hemming the Luna Tank

The hem of the Luna Tank is left

raw. Easy-peasy! This results in a
really swingy tank. The hem will not
fray with most knit fabrics.

If you want a finished hem, there

are some options. We recommend
you hem both front and back
pieces before sewing the tank.

Option 1: Raw hem (as indicated in

the instructions).

Optional: Add length to the top to accommodate the seam allowance if you choose option #2 or 3 below.

Option 2: Press the hem under Option 3: Overlock or serge the edge Option 4: Overlock or serge

use your serger to sew these seams if you prefer.
Feed the tail of your serger thread back into the

GLOSSARY 15

Notch
A mark on the pattern that can be cut into the seam allowance to assist you in lining up your fabric pieces. Take
care not to cut past the seam allowance when making notches.

Finish seam / finish edge

Finishing a seam or fabric edge helps to stop the fabric from fraying (unraveling) and stabilizes knit seams. Use
a serger or overlocker to finish knit seams.

Grainline
The grainline runs along the lengthwise grain, parallel to the selvage edge of the fabric. Line up the grainline
marked on the pattern pieces with the grain line of the fabric before cutting to ensure proper fit and drape of
your finished garment.

Right side & wrong side

The right side of your fabric refers to the side you want facing out and the wrong side is the side that
faces in against your body.

Serger/Overlocker
A sewing machine used for overcasting to prevent material from fraying at the edge.

Selvage
The finished edge of the fabric that runs the length of the fabric.

Topstitching
A line of stitching that adds detail to seams and edges and is visible on the garment. Topstitching is typically
more than 1/8" (0.3 cm) from the edge and can be decorative.

Zig-zag stitch
A back-and-forth stitch used in stitching stretch fabrics. The wider the zig-zag stitch, the more the seam can
stretch.
