Welcome to Nepal

Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked country in South

Asia.Nepal, long under the rule of hereditary prime ministers favouring a policy of isolation,

remained closed to the outside world until a palace revolt in 1950 restored the crown’s authority in

1951; the country gained admission to the United Nations in 1955. In 1991 the kingdom

established a multiparty parliamentary system. In 2008, however, after a decadelong period of

violence and turbulent negotiation with a strong Maoist insurgency, the monarchy was dissolved,

and Nepal was declared a democratic republic.

History of Nepal

Nepal's history is a tapestry of conquests, dynasties, and cultural exchanges that span

millennia. Situated at the crossroads of Asia, Nepal has been a melting pot of diverse peoples,

religions, and traditions.

21

Ancient Nepal

The history of Nepal can be traced back to ancient times, with evidence of human settlements

dating back to the Paleolithic Age. The Kathmandu Valley, with its fertile land and strategic

location, became a center of civilization and trade.

The Licchavi dynasty, which ruled Nepal from the 4th to the 9th century, was instrumental in

shaping the region's political and cultural landscape. The period saw the flourishing of Buddhism

and the construction of magnificent temples and monasteries.

Medieval Period

The medieval period in Nepal was marked by the rise and fall of powerful kingdoms and

dynasties. The Malla kings, who ruled over various city-states in the Kathmandu Valley, left behind

a legacy of exquisite art, architecture, and urban planning.

During this time, Nepal became a vibrant hub of trade and cultural exchange, attracting

merchants, scholars, and pilgrims from across Asia.

Unification of Nepal

In the late 18th century, King Prithvi Narayan Shah of the Gorkha Kingdom embarked on a

campaign to unify the fragmented kingdoms and principalities of Nepal. His vision of a greater

Nepal led to the conquest of Kathmandu Valley and the unification of Nepal under the Shah

dynasty.

The unification brought about significant political and social changes, laying the foundation for

the modern nation-state of Nepal.

22

British Influence and Rana Rule

The 19th century saw Nepal coming under increasing British influence, leading to the signing

of the Treaty of Sugauli in 1815. The treaty resulted in the loss of territories in present-day

Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh to British India.

The Rana dynasty, which came to power in the mid-19th century, ruled Nepal as hereditary

prime ministers for over a century. The Rana regime was characterized by autocratic rule,

isolationism, and suppression of dissent.

Modern Nepal

Nepal underwent significant political transformations in the 20th century, including the

overthrow of the Rana regime in 1951 and the establishment of a democratic system. The country

adopted a new constitution in 1959, ushering in a period of political stability and economic

development.

However, Nepal's journey towards democracy was fraught with challenges, including periods

of political instability, royal coups, and Maoist insurgency. The decade-long civil war from 1996 to

2006 claimed thousands of lives and brought the country to the brink of collapse.

Present Day

23

Today, Nepal is a federal democratic republic with a multiethnic, multilingual society. The

country faces numerous challenges, including poverty, inequality, and infrastructure

development.

However, Nepal remains resilient, with its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and warm

hospitality attracting tourists and travelers from around the world.
