This is part of a report by the Chairman of the Charities Commitee of a Club.
By Match this year, we shall have raised enough money, we hope, to buy the equipment for the Youth Club. When we
have raised the money, we are planning to go back to the Youth Club leaders in order to discover exactly what is
needed most. Plans have been made for the Book Sale which will be held on 15th February. This means that many of
us will be spending the first two weeks of February collecting books. The event is likely to be held in the Town Hall. If
there are problems here, however, we hope that other Club members might come up with some alternative
suggestions.
As we are proposing to sponsor a student from Africa on a three-month language course in this country, we also intend
to hold a Charity Dance in the spring. Such events are apt to be difficult to organize, so all members of the Club are
invited to contribute or help in any way they can.
The moment I was asked if we could possibly help in some way with the new Club for the Disabled. I said yes. As
Chairman, lam bound to say that this is the sort of social work many Club members would like to do, other than simply
raising money. We are therefore planning to ask members if they can perhaps help out on one Saturday every month
(on a rota basis).
Finally, by January next year the Club will have been going for twenty years, and the Committee intend to mark this
anniversary with some kind of dinner, a dance or a party. We have already been offered (unofficially) the use of the
dance all at 'The Forest Hotel'. However, we shall be devoting one of our meetings in the near future to full discussion
on the form of the event, etc. Any suggestions will be welcome.

Although computers are considered the most perfect and effective devices in our modern time, we cannot avoid some
certain problems when we are working on a computer. Letters and phone conversations are private. It is against the
law to open someone’s mail without permission or to listen secretly to someone's telephone conversation. And now
there are laws to protect the privacy of e-mail. It is also against the law to read the messages that a person sends or
receives on a computer. Although each person has a secret password for his or her e-mail, sometimes the passwords
are discovered by hackers and the mail box is opened. Recently several companies that do business on the Internet
have been attacked. The attackers sent huge amounts of useless e-mails to the Web sites of these companies. The
effect was to slow or stop the ability of the companies to do their business. Such actions are known as “denial of
service” attacks. The companies say they may have lost millions of dollars because they were not able to provide
goods and services during the attacks. Most of the companies were able to solve the problem in about three hours. The
victims of the attacks included some of largest and most successful companies on the Internet, such as Yahoo,
Amazon, and Com and E-Trade. The police have investigated the attackers. The computer industry leaders have
discussed the electronic attacks and the problems of computer crime. They suggest that a person who is found guilty of

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to the questions.
In the 1960s, it took pop and rock groups one or two days to record other their songs. Nowadays, it can take
months and months. Many rock groups begin by recording only one instrument, for example, the voice. Then they
record other instruments – electric piano, synthesizer, guitars, drums and so on.
Next, they might use a computer to add special effects. Finally, they ‘mix’ all the instruments until they get the sound
that they want. This means that a CD or cassette will always sound very different from a live concert.
Music engineers have developed a new computer programme that will change the future of music. A computer can
analyze a singer's voice. Then if you give the computer the lyrics and music of a song, the computer can 'sing' it in that
voice. This means that a singer only needs to record one song and the computer can then sing other songs in the
singer's own voice. Singers can sing new songs many years after they have died.
Most of us listen to music for pleasure, but for the record companies, music is a product, the same as soap powder.
When a record company finds a new group (or 'band'), they first try to develop the band's 'profile'. They will try to create
an 'image' for the band that they think will attract young people. Instead of allowing the band’s full artistic freedom, they
will often tell the band what they should wear, what they should say and how they should sing and play.
In recent year, many rock groups have started their own record companies because they say that the big companies
are too commercial.
