Shopping is now one of the most popular

forms of leisure activities in many countries

for young adults. Why is this? Do you think
this is a positive or a negative development?
Sample Answer
In recent years, shopping has become one of the most
favored leisure activities among young adults in many
countries. This trend can be attributed to(stems
from) a variety of contributing factors, and I believe it
has more drawbacks than advantages.
Reasons Behind the Popularity of Shopping as
Leisure
Key reasons for this phenomenon include the rise of
consumerism and the ease of modern shopping. First,
advertisements, social media platforms, and influencers
continuously promote the idea that material
possessions equate to happiness and social status.
Consequently, young people are encouraged to shop
not just for necessity but also as a way to express
themselves and stay fashionable.Another factor is the
availability and convenience of modern shopping
options. With the proliferation of malls and online
shopping platforms, young adults now have easy
access to a variety of products. These places are not
merely for shopping but also serve as hubs for
socializing, dining, and entertainment. For instance,
many young people visit shopping malls to meet friends
or spend quality time, making shopping an integral part
of their leisure activities.
The Drawbacks of Shopping as Leisure
Despite its popularity, I believe this trend has more
negative than positive implications/effects, with
drawbacks including financial instability, a superficial
life (một cuộc sống nông cạn, chỉ nghĩ về vật chất), and
adverse environmental impacts.First and foremost,
many young adults overspend on non-essential items,
often relying on credit cards or loans, which can result
in debt and long-term financial challenges.Second, the
focus on consumerism can promote materialism(Chủ
nghĩa vật chất) and overshadow(làm lu mờ) more
meaningful leisure activities. Time spent shopping
could otherwise be used for hobbies, volunteering, or
developing skills that contribute to personal growth.
Furthermore, the environmental impact of
overconsumption cannot be overlooked. The demand
for fast fashion and disposable goods significantly
contributes to waste and environmental degradation,
posing a serious threat to global sustainability.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while shopping has become a

The Evolution of Shopping as a Leisure

Activity Among Young Adults
In recent years, shopping has transcended its
traditional purpose of fulfilling basic needs and has
become a predominant leisure activity among young
adults in many countries. This cultural shift can be
attributed to a combination of social, economic, and
technological factors that have transformed shopping
into a multifaceted experience.
The Allure of Consumerism (chủ nghĩa tiêu dùng)
The rise of consumerism has created a culture where
material possessions are equated with(được đánh
đồng với/ được cho là bằng với/ đồng nghĩa với)
happiness and social status. Advertisements, social
media, and influencer marketing reinforce(củng cố)
the idea that owning(possessing) the latest fashion,
gadgets, or accessories(phụ kiện) is essential for
self-expression and (gain) acceptance within peer
groups. For young adults, purchasing items has
become a way to showcase their identity,
individuality (bản chất cá nhân), and values. This
mindset is often perpetuated by (reinforce) societal
pressures to "keep up" with trends, making shopping
an emotionally rewarding activity. (hành vi tốt,bổ
ích cho cảm xúc)
The Convenience of Modern Shopping
Proliferate (v) sinh sôi, nở rộ - proliferation
Advancements in technology have revolutionized the
shopping experience. The proliferation (sự nở rộ) of
e-commerce platforms and mobile applications has
made purchasing goods effortless(easy) and
instantaneous (immediate). Young consumers can
browse/surf and buy from the comfort of their
homes or on the go, benefiting from features like
personalized recommendations, discounts, and free
delivery. Additionally, traditional shopping centers have
evolved into entertainment hubs that offer dining,
movies, and social spaces, making malls a popular
destination for young people to gather and spend their
leisure time.
Online learning can allow learners to attend
classes from the comfort of their homes
The Social Aspect of Shopping
Beyond purchasing goods, shopping has become a key
avenue for social interaction. For many young adults, it
serves as an opportunity to bond with friends, whether
through browsing stores together or sharing online
"wish lists." Shopping outings often include additional
activities, such as dining or attending events, turning a
mundane errand into a social and recreational
experience. Online platforms further enhance this
dynamic by allowing users to share their purchases,
reviews, and opinions, creating a sense of community
around consumerism.
Allow for economic growth -> create job
opportunities (workers,marketers, salespeople)

Better mental health ( retail therapy: mua sắm để

The Economic Impacts
From an economic perspective, the emphasis on
shopping as a leisure activity has both positive and
negative implications. On the one hand, it drives
demand for goods and services, fostering growth in
retail industries and providing employment
opportunities. On the other hand, the culture of
overconsumption can lead young adults into
financial instability. Many rely on credit cards or
loans to afford non-essential purchases,
accumulating(tích luỹ) debt that may result in long-
term financial challenges. This trend raises
concerns about the sustainability(Dài hạn) of such
spending habits in the face of broader economic
uncertainties.
The Environmental Costs
Deplete (V); depleted (adj) cạn kiệt; depletion (n)
The shift toward shopping as entertainment has
significant environmental repercussions(negative
impacts/consequences). The rise of fast fashion and
disposable goods contributes to/causes/drives
resource depletion(sự cạn kiệt tài nguyên) and
waste generation. Overconsumption
exacerbates/worsens/compounds issues such as
pollution, deforestation, and carbon emissions, posing
a serious threat to global sustainability. For instance,
the production of cheap, trendy clothing often involves
intensive resource use (dùng nhiều tài nguyên/
nguyên liệu) and labor exploitation(cần nhiều sức
lao động), while discarded items end up in
landfills(bãi rác), creating lasting(lâu dài) ecological
harm.

Tung These days, it is not uncommon to see
youngsters who depend on different

variety of contributing factors, and I
would argue that the drawbacks are

There are two main reasons of wasteful

shopping, including the feelings of fear
when not keeping up with recent trends
and bragging to others. Firstly, young
adults, who have a rich and luxurious
group of friends, feel scared and face
peer pressure. For example, in a team,
everyone has a limited edition kind of T-

everyone can joke with you, so you can
be stressed This means(SVO) the rest
of the group can tease(chọc) that

pressuring him or her to buy one.
Secondly, showing off with friends is a
hobby of some youngsters in recent

admired and respected by everyone.
For instance, nowadays, in/on social

Oanh Shopping is now one of the most
popular forms of leisure activities
Less is in many countries for young
more adults. Why is this? Do you think
this is a positive or a negative
development?
In today’s society, shopping has become
prevalent in leisure time for young generation in
many countries. This phenomenon stems from
various contributing factors, and I would argue
that the drawbacks are more obvious.
The primary reasons for/ causes of this trend
include the ease of modern shopping and the
growth of consumerism. Firstly, the proliferation
of shopping malls, e-commerce platforms and
mobile shopping applications provide the
convenience in shopping, which helps to foster
the consume power. For example, many young
people can easily visit malls to meet their
friends more often than before, and they enjoy
eating, shopping as an entertainment part of
their leisure activities. Additionally, the currently
trend of using famous people or widely
influencers or trustful KOC (key opinion
consumer) from most of brands enhance the

people. Sometimes, they pay more money for
shopping not for the actual demand but for
staying fashionable and showing off themselves
to peers. Consequently, shopping turns to the
consumerism for youth generation the lifestyle
revolving around(xoay quanh) consumerism has
made shopping an integral part of youngsters’
lives.
Despite its popularity, I believe that this trend
has more negative than positive impact,
including some drawbacks of financial instability
and detrimental environmental effects. Firstly,
the uncontrolled shopping behaviors from youth
individuals might cause unstable personal
finance. For instance, the overspending on
unnecessary products which rely on credit cards
or loans may lead to debts and long-term
financial risks. Its consequence might bring
more negative impact on their family and
community as a whole. Furthermore, the
demand for fast fashion consumption and one-
time goods in young adults contribute to the
vast waste and environmental degradation over
time day by day. As a result, this shopping
behavior might damage the ecosystem and the
sustainability of our planet and sustainable
globe.
In conclusion, while shopping has become more
common in young individuals in their leisure
activities because of the growth of consumerism
and the ease of modern shopping, I am
convinced that this phenomenon has more
drawbacks.
