Most Europeans might have a fair bit of difficulty accurately

finding Macedonia on a map, but the country does have
quite a few large firms that have become industry leaders
within the region, and have also increasingly begun selling
their products even further afield. Renowned for the quality
of its cuisine, it’s no surprise that many of these companies
come from the food production sector. We take a brief look
at the stories behind a few of them here.

Bimilk
If you consume any milk, cheese or other dairy products whilst
in Macedonia, the chances are quite good that it was made by
the folks at Mlekarna Bitola (Bitola Dairy, or just Bimilk for short),
as they are by far the largest producer of such goods in the
country. Founded in 1952, the company combines the Balkans’
long and storied tradition of dairy production with modern
facilities and adherence to strict EU standards, and have also
been repeatedly recognised at the EU level for their various
various social and environmental responsibility programmes.
With some two-thirds of the country covered in moun-
tainous or hilly terrain, the local Busha breed of cows are
compact, hardy and efficient in terms of milk production,
having roamed the region since Neolithic times and be-
longing to the Bos brachyceros europaeus subgenus of
primitive short-horned cattle. For any of our readers who
don’t happen to be zoologists, the most distinguishing fea-
ture of Bimilk’s products is Bitola Chupa (or the Bitola Girl in
local dialect), the adorable mascot who travels around the
world a la Dora the Explorer in order to teach Macedonian
children about both nutrition and geography. If you were to

Vitaminka
Vitaminka has been one of Macedonia’s most recognisable
and respected consumer goods producers for generations.
Founded in 1956 in the town of Prillep, the fourth largest
city in the country, located 110km east of Ohrid and 130km
south of Skopje, Vitaminka got its start as a producer of
ground red pepper, but quickly diversified into other food-
stuffs. Nowadays it operates under the slogan “world of
tastes”, and is determined to bring from the flavours and
tastes of Macedonia to the rest of the world. Its products
are currently found in some 30 countries worldwide, with
half of its sales coming from abroad. Its most popular and
iconic brand is probably Stobi Flips (a type of crunchy corn
puff crisps with peanut flavour), but it also has some 350
different products ranging from snacks, chocolate and
candies to soups, condiments and teas. Make sure to try a
box of Atlantis sea shell chocolates, especially if you’re by
the lake in Ohrid. They come in a variety of flavours, but our
