INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
It would be fulfilling to be a police officer because police officers help people in
the community and keep it safe. They also enforce the law. They are the reason why
people can live their lives in peace. If there is anyone in the community that citizens can
trust it would be the police officers. Police officers have to accomplish many things in
their workday. They have to write detailed reports and fill out forms. They are
responsible for making sure that people obey the law and are kept safe at all times. A
Police officers normal day is usually less exciting and less dangerous than how it can be
portrayed on TV. Police officers have to have many abilities and traits to go far in these
types of careers. The most important trait they must have is to multitask. They must have
an empathetic personality to help victims of terrible crimes. They must be physically fit
to be able to catch criminals and explore all areas that could contain evidence. If they
don’t possess the ability to think quickly and clearly then they will be injured or possibly
killed because of one stupid mistake. Cops have to be able to communicate well with
people. Some special skills will also benefit them in their career. Like being fluent in
many other languages or scuba diving expertise are very helpful. Police officers have to
have good Judgment. They have to have great communication skills. Police officers have
to have a good education or they will not be able to do their jobs correctly.
Police recruitment is very important to all law enforcement agencies; it seeks to
recruit, select, train and maintain the best possible officers (Grant et al, 2012). This paper
will give you the reader a general understanding of police recruitment and also discuss
some of the problems happening in police recruitment; past and present, along with
remedies to these problems.
To become a police officer there are five basic requirements that one must first
meet. Although these requirements may vary slightly from state to state they are pretty
basic and not too difficult to meet. First an applicant must be a citizen of the Philippines
with a good moral character. The next requirements seek that an applicant be twenty-one
(21) not more than thirty (30) years of age upon take oath and Must have not been
dishonorably discharged from military employment or dismissed for cause from any
civilian position in the government; Must have not been convicted by final judgment of
an offense or crime involving moral turpitude. All in all, police recruitment is a huge part
of law enforcement agencies and if it wasn't for recruitment and the work that goes in
to getting officers field ready who knows what kind of chaos could have come from
having unfit officers patrolling the streets and keeping citizens safe on a daily basis.
Many young people aspire to become police officers. However, not everyone is fit
for the role as police work is extremely demanding both physically and mentally. In order
to be effective in the job, a policeman should possess superb communication skills, extra-
ordinary courage, excellent judgement, empathy, and a high degree of professionalism, to
name a few.
Choosing this career in law enforcement can be a quite challenging yet rewarding. If you
aspire to join the police force, then you are bound to make a difference in your
community as well as your own personal life. But before wearing that badge, you must
first undergo the first challenge before achieving your dream – to pass the application
process. Aside from passing a physical fitness test, psychological exam, drug test, and a
background check, you also need to undergo different written examinations and pass
them in order to become a policeman. These examinations are administered to test
different competencies. Written exams include common subject areas such as Math,
spelling and vocabulary and others. Most significantly, specific test questions are
designed to test your skills when it comes to memory, judgement, observation, reaction
and common reasoning.
