The Present Continuous Tense

Usage :

- It is used to talk about events that are happening at the moment of speaking.

- It is used to talk about "certain" future plans and arrangements

We can use key words like: this weekend, tomorrow morning, later.
The Near Future Tense (be+going to) (p.29)
Form: am/is/are +not+ going to + infinitive
Example: -I am going to meet my friend tomorrow
-She is going to travel next week
-They are going to play football next Monday

Forming Questions:

Wh-question: Yes-No questions:


Wh-word + are/is/am + subject + going to + infinitive? -aux. (v.to.be) + subject + going to + infinitive?
-Example: Whom are you going to meet tomorrow?
Answer: My friend Are you going to meet your friend tomorrow?
answer: yes, I’m.

The Near Future Tense (p.29)
Usage
It is used for future plans and predictions.

Negation:
(am/is/are + not + going to + infinitive)
-Example: I’m not going to meet my friend tomorrow
Tips:
*For personal plans, it is better to use (be going to +inf.)
I am going to read a book.

*For plans that involve other people (group plans), it is better to use Present continuous:
We are having a party on Saturday.
If going to +infinitive is followed by the verb go, it is better to be removed:
I am going to (go to) the cinema.)

1. We are going to the cinema on Friday (OR) We are going to go to the cinema on Friday.
2. Are you staying at home this evening? (OR) Are you going to stay at home this evening?
3. She is not working this weekend (OR) She is not going to work this weekend

we ask about the subject.

NOTICE:
*We didn’t use an auxiliary as (do, does, did) as in the previous question because we are asking
about the subject.
Ahmed does his homework. Who does his homework?
*The verb form in the question is the same as in the answer.
*We use who/which to ask about the subject.

(B)- Questions with auxiliaries (object Questions):

*We use an auxiliary in object questions. In other words, we use the auxiliary
whenever we ask about the object.

Example:
-What did you do last night?
I did my homework
-What did you do last night?
I stayed at home.

There are some phrases that would help you while you are making a phone call, for example:

*When you start a call, you can say:


“Hello, it’s Andy” (NOT: I’m Andy, as you may think)

*When you ask to speak to someone, you can say:
“Can I speak to Aliaa ?

*When the person you are calling is not there, you can say:

“Can I leave a message?”


*The receiver can tell you when the person you are calling is not there:
“She/He is not here. Can I take a message? I’ll ask her/him to call you back.”

*When the call is finished. The receiver would say:
