points, designated by Roman Numerals will remain in the correct order.

General Purpose: To persuade


Specific Purpose: To persuade audience to take a prescribed action
Target Audience: Select between hostile, neutral, or favorable

I. Attention
Attention grabbing statement that makes audience want to listen. Reveal of
topic without previewing the specific purpose (action). Also includes a
credibility statement connecting the speaker to the topic and audience.

II. Need:
A. First claim of value that some existing condition is unacceptable, bad,
unsatisfactory, or a problem
1. Supporting claim of fact
a. Evidence in the form of example, statistics, testimony, etc.
2. Additional supporting claim of fact
a. Evidence (proof)

B. Appeal to audience’s need or needs (physiological/safety/love &
belonging/self esteem/self actualization)
