S N Subrahmanyan: Appointed as MD and CEO of Larsen & Toubro
Larsen & Toubro announced the re-appointment of S. N. Subrahmanyan as Managing Director and Chief
Executive Officer of the company, with effect from July 1, 2022, marking the first change of guard at the
top of India’s largest engineering and construction corporation in 18 years. S.N. Subramanyam will
replace A.M. Naik as the CEO of the company. L&T said that A.M. Naik, the company’s long-serving
chairman, has been named non-executive chairman for three years to ensure a smooth transition of
leadership and to provide direction and mentorship to management.

The present term of Naik as group executive chairman expires on September 30. He had been given a
five-year extension till the company’s annual general meeting in 2017, which he had received in 2012.
Prior to taking over the reins as CEO & MD in July 2017, SNS in his capacity as Deputy MD & President led
L&T’s infrastructure business to its position as the country’s largest construction organisation and
14th in the world. He is now responsible for leading the breadth and width of L&T’s considerable business
interests to new growth levels, riding on the enormous benefits of digitalisation, big data, and predictive
analysis that he drives internally with exceptional zeal. He places a premium on innovation, project
management and talent development, particularly in leadership roles.

During Naik’s 18-year tenure, the $16 billion-in-revenue L&T has gone global, waged bitter battles with
competitors, avoided a hostile acquisition, and diversified into various new sectors, including defence
equipment manufacturing.

Subrahmanyan also takes over at a difficult time: private investment demand in India hasn’t taken off,
West Asia is slowing due to low oil prices, and the company has a high working capital and low return
on equity.

International Day to End Obstetric Fistula: 23 May
Every year on May 23rd, the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula raises awareness of this medical
issue and mobilizes worldwide support for child-bearing women.

An obstetric fistula is an abnormal opening between a woman’s genital tract and their rectum. One of
the primary causes of a fistula is obstructed labor. This is also known as labor dystocia. Obstructed labor
occurs when an unborn baby is physically blocked from exiting the pelvis. Other causes of obstetric
fistulas include prolonged labor, poor access to medical care, malnutrition, and teenage pregnancy.

In 2003 the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and its partners launched the global Campaign to
End Fistula, a collaborative initiative to prevent fistula and restore the health of those affected by the
condition. The day was officially recognised in 2012.

What is an Obstetric fistula?

Obstetric fistula is a devastating childbirth injury, and a neglected public health and human rights issue.
Two million women in low-resource settings have an obstetric fistula, and 100,000 more develop one
every year. Leaking urine and/or faeces and, as a result, living in desperate circumstances, only 1 in 50
ever receives treatment.

Indian Commonwealth Day 2022

Commonwealth Day is celebrated on May 24 in India and a couple of other countries. Commonwealth
Day is also commonly known as Empire Day. It marks the development of the British Empire in India
and other colonies of Britain.

The theme for Commonwealth Day 2022 is ‘Delivering a Common Future’ – which highlights how the
fifty-four member countries in the Commonwealth family are ‘innovating, connecting and
transforming’ to help attain goals like fighting climate change, promoting good governance, and
improving trade.

History

Commonwealth Day, formerly known as Empire Day, was established in 1902. After the death of Queen
Victoria in 1901, this day was established as a holiday that honored England, the unity between nations
of the Commonwealth, and its ideals of freedom, tolerance, and justice. This day was first celebrated on
May 24, 1902, which was the Queen’s birthday.

However, it was celebrated in many schools across the British Empire even before it was formally
recognised as an annual event. By the 1950s, the British Empire had begun to disintegrate as several
colonies gained independence, and Empire Day had lost its significance.

However, the majority of them kept ties with Britain and established the Commonwealth of
Nations. Empire Day was renamed Commonwealth Day in 1958. In 1973, the Royal Commonwealth
Society proposed the day be changed, and the second Monday in March was selected by the
Commonwealth Secretariat as the observance day.

Saudi Aramco overtook Apple Inc. as the world’s most valuable company
Saudi Aramco overtook Apple Inc. as the world’s most valuable company, stoked by a surge in oil prices
that is buoying the crude producer while adding to an inflation surge throttling demand for technology
stocks.

Aramco traded near its highest level on record on Wednesday, with a market capitalisation of about
$2.43 trillion, surpassing that of Apple for the first time since 2020. The iPhone maker fell 5.2 per cent to
close at $146.50 per share, giving it a valuation of $2.37 trillion.

Even if the move proves short-lived and Apple retakes the top spot again, the role reversal underscores
the power of major forces coursing through the global economy. Soaring oil prices, while great for profits
at Aramco, are exacerbating rising inflation that is forcing the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at
the fastest pace in decades. The higher rates go, the more investors discount the value of future revenue
flows from tech companies and push down their stock prices.

India overtakes Germany to become 4th largest vehicle market

According to the report released by Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles
(OICA), India has surpassed Germany to become 4th largest vehicle market in the world. The 1st was
occupied by China, followed by the US and Japan. According to the latest numbers sourced from OICA,
the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles – the international trade association
formed of 39 national automotive industry trade associations – India saw 3,759,398 vehicles sold in 2021,
compared to 2,973,319 vehicles in Germany. This translates to a difference of almost 26 percent.

Key points of the report:

 Interestingly, it was in 2019 when India had first grabbed the fourth spot and was expected to
become the third-largest by 2025. It’s still possible for the country to reach the place, but it would
mean surpassing Japan which saw sales of 4,448,340 units in 2021.

 The personal mobility space is around 33 vehicles per 1,000 which is one of the lowest compared
to the developed market.

 The topmost position is secured by China however the automobile sales remained stagnant.
Similarly, the United States of America (USA) too reported 4 per cent growth. v.Thirdly, Japan
holds the 3rd position however it shrunk compared to both 2020 and 2019.

project, named Closeby Habitable Exoplanet Survey (CHES) would be the first space mission specially
designed to search for habitable terrestrial planets around nearby Sun-like stars.

The exploration of habitable planets outside the solar system is one of the key frontiers of fundamental
research in astronomy. The discovery of the nearby habitable worlds will be a great breakthrough for
humankind, and will also help humans visit those Earth twins and expand our living space in the future.

According to a research professor from the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of
Sciences, Ji Jianghui, more than 5,000 exoplanets have been discovered and confirmed so far, including
around 50 Earth-like planets in the habitable zone. However, most of these are hundreds of light-years
away from Earth.

Haryana agriculture minister J P Dalal on Tuesday launched the 'Chaara-Bijaee Yojana' scheme, under
which a farmer growing fodder and supplying the produce to cowsheds will get a financial assistance of
Rs 10,000 per acre. The rationale behind the scheme is to address the State’s fodder shortage and rising

(DBT).

Under the scheme:

The number of cow shelters in the state increased from 175 in 2017 to 600 in 2022. Most cow shelters
remain overcrowded due to an increase in the stray cattle population. Also, the Phosphate-Rich Organic
Manure (PROM) prepared from cow dung can be used as an alternative for synthetic fertilisers. The
Prom is also prepared from various gaushalas of Pinjore, Hisar and Bhiwani districts of Haryana.

Agriculture and farmers’ welfare minister JP Dalal said, “The money will be transferred to the farmers’
bank account through direct benefit transfer. The state government has been taking a number of steps
in the interest of farmers, and the ‘Chaara-Bijaee Yojana’ is another step in that direction. In April, ₹13.44
crore was distributed among 569 gaushalas in the state for purchasing fodder.”

Panel of PM’s Office recommends urban job guarantee scheme

A report commissioned by the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) to the Prime Minister on Wednesday
suggested that the government roll out a universal basic income (UBI) scheme to reduce stark income
gaps and launch a guaranteed employment programme for the urban unemployed. Citing the country’s
uneven income distribution, the report also advocated raising the minimum wage and increasing
government investment on the social sector to make vulnerable groups more resilient to shocks and
prevent them from falling into poverty.

According to the report that is titled, “The State of Inequality in India”, given the disparity in labour
force participation rates between rural and urban areas, the urban equivalent of demand-based and
guaranteed employment programmes such as MGNREGS should be implemented so that surplus labour
can be rehabilitated.

It added that boosting the minimum wage and implementing universal basic income are two ideas that
can help close the income gap and ensure that wages are distributed equally in the labour market.
The EAC-PM stated that charting the mobility into and out of poverty is the most significant part of
quantifying poverty in a multi-dimensional environment.

According to the results of the three rounds of the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), the top 1% of the
population possessed 6-7% of total income earned in the three years to 2019-20, with the top 10%
holding a third.
