Hi Junko,

Did you see that documentary which was on Channel 5 last night? Oh, no. I forgot! That channel is not (24)
_______ in your country, is it? I wonder why not. It’s really good. The programme was about the history of
mass media and how it has changed so much in the last 20 or 30 years.

The most interesting thing was how the internet has (25) _______ the flow of information. The point she

Maybe they will sell it to thousands of other companies. Or perhaps they will even use it for criminal

Read the blog and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions from 29 to 33.
Hi everyone.

I want to talk this week about a very important issue in the modern world now that the mass media is such a
big thing. It is the need for media literacy, particularly for teenagers. They are at the time in their lives
when they are moving from being children, who only know some things about their own country, to being
adults. They are at the stage when they need to learn about the rest of the world.

Media literacy is about knowing how to deal with the news and the information which we see and hear in
the mass media, including newspapers, radio and television, but especially on the internet. It’s really
important, because nowadays there’s a lot of information online, and research suggests that teenagers get
most of their news about the world now from this source. For teenagers, being smart about media is very
important for two main reasons.

First, some websites might share news without having checked the facts. In the past, except in countries
with bad governments, news organisations did not print or broadcast a news story until they had checked it
very carefully. But often nowadays, websites do not check anything when they reprint a story from another
website, not even spelling and grammar.

Second, some websites only present one side of a complicated story because they want you to share their
own opinion about it. Teenagers are still deciding what they believe, so they should not just accept the first
version of a story which they read on the web. They need to stop and think, ‘What is the writer doing here?
Is he/she just giving me information? Or is he/she trying to make me believe something?’ Teenagers need to
look for signs that a story is not balanced or go to other sources to see if there is another side to the issue.

29. Why does the writer say “particularly for teenagers” in paragraph 1?
A. They are interested in new information of any sort.
B. They are old enough to understand what the term means.
C. They are starting to learn about the world beyond their own country.
D. They are just starting to use mass media.

30. What does “this source” mean in paragraph 2?

A. Radio.
B. Television.
C. The internet.
D. The mass media.

31. What does the writer imply about news organisations on the web in paragraph 3?
A. They have usually checked the facts of a story.
B. They often copy stories from other websites.
C. They often print news which they know is false.
D. They only correct spelling and grammar mistakes before sharing.

32. What does the writer give in paragraph 4?

A. Advice on how to recognise fake news.
B. Their opinion about news.
C. Information and advice.
D. Different sides of a story.

33. What is a good final sentence for this blog?

A. But it’s often impossible to reach a conclusion.
B. So they should stop getting news from the internet.
C. Then they can make their own judgement.
D. Sometimes an issue only has one side.
