MODULE DESCRIPTOR : This module covers testing/identifying faults and servicing


starting system components.

NOMINAL DURATION : 24 Hrs.

SUMMARY OF LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of this module, the trainee/student must be able to:

LO 1. Test starting system components and identify faults

LO 2. Disassemble starter

LO 3. Repair/replace and assemble starter components/parts

LO1. TEST STARTING SYSTEM COMPONENTS AND IDENTIFY FAULTS

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Starting system component parts are identified


2. Faults ARE identified and preferred repair action are determined
3. Tests are carried out according to industry standard procedure

CONTENTS:

1. Starting system electrical may include; dynastart, inertia, pre-engaged, axial coaxial,
fined and remote solenoid, direct drive, gear reduction protection lockout, inhibitor
switch, series parallel switching, battery insulation switch, single/multiple battery
2. Starting system mechanical may include pull rope, crank handle inertia.
3. Handtools, testing equipment including, multi-meters, volt meters, ammeters
4. Power tools, air tools, electrical loading equipment, test benches soldering equipment
multi-meters, growler, induction ammeter, test light (12V and 24V), lathe, single and
gauged panel CRO
5. Testing, dismantling, assembly, removal and replacement
6. Fault, finding using aural, visual and Functional assessment for damage corrosion,
wear and electrical short/broken circuits electrical measurements
7. Reading interpreting wiring diagrams
8. Test jump start vehicle
9. Electrical principles
10. Repair procedure
11. Electrical measuring and testing procedures
12. Vehicle safety requirements

CONDITION:

Students/trainees must be provided with the following:

1. Running condition engine 6. Set of wrenches


2. Starting system (simulated mock-up) 7. Sand paper
3. Multi-tester 8. Growler
4. Service manual
5. Starter motor

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Starter parts and function are identified and explained.


2. Starter is disassembled according to service manual
3. Starter parts are tested and defective parts determined

CONTENTS:

1. Starting system component parts and operating principle


2. Tools & equipment needed in disassembling starter motor
3. Procedure in disassembling and assembling starter motor
4. Procedure in testing starter parts
5. Explain defective parts

CONDITIONS:

Students /trainees must be provided with the following:

1. Running condition engine


2. Starting system (simulated mock-up)
3. Multi-tester
4. Growler
5. Service manual
6. Starter motor
7. Sand paper
8. Set of wrenches

LO3. REPAIR/REPLACE AND ASSEMBLE STARTER COMPONENTS/PARTS

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Defective parts are repaired/replaced per service manual


2. Starter is assembled in conformity with manufacturer
3. Starter is bench tested for functionality per service manual

CONTENTS:

1. Tools and materials needed


2. Service manual in starter motor repair
3. Procedure in dismantling, checking, repairing, repairing tarter motor
4. Test starter motor functionality
5. Safety procedure in assembling

CONDITIONS:

Students/trainees must be provided with the following:

1. Starter motor
2. Multi-tester
3. Service manual
4. Set of wrenches
5. Sand paper
6. Growler
7. Running conditions engine
