EDUC 1300: Learning Frameworks

Career Research Project (20% of Final Grade)

OBJECTIVES

Each student will demonstrate the ability to:

1. Conduct research on a career of their choice using library resources introduced

earlier in the course.

2. Provide well-documented responses to research questions by incorporating and

properly citing sources for each answer.

3. Create a Works Cited page in MLA format to credit all research sources.

This project consists of two parts: a written report and an interview with someone
currently working in your chosen career field. Both parts must be typed, follow MLA
format, and the written report must be a minimum of two pages.

Part I: Written Report

1) Introduction (labeled "Introduction")

Start with an engaging introduction that reflects the purpose of your project. Clearly state
your thesis (italicized) to guide the reader. Your introductory paragraph should provide a
general overview of your chosen career and why it interests you.

Example:
One of the most rewarding careers today is nursing. In the United States, nursing is highly
respected due to its essential role in healthcare. I chose this field because I want to contribute
to the wellbeing of others through personalized care and support.

2) Questions and Answers (labeled numerically)

Answer each of the following questions in complete paragraphs. Italicize the topic
sentence of each answer. For questions marked with an asterisk (*), you must reference
material from your research and properly cite your sources in MLA format within the
paragraph.
Questions:

1. Why did you choose this particular career?

Example: I chose this career because it aligns with my interests in science and helping
others.

2. *What personality characteristics are essential for this career? How does your
personality match or differ?
Example: A nurse must demonstrate empathy, resilience, and adaptability. My
personality matches these traits as I’ve always had a deep interest in caring for others.

3. *What education or training is required for this career? What is your plan to achieve
this?
Example: A bachelor's degree in nursing is essential, followed by passing the NCLEX
exam. My plan includes enrolling in a nursing program at a four-year university.

4. What skills do you already have that will be helpful in this career? What skills
will you need to develop?
Example: I possess strong communication skills, which are essential in nursing.
However, I will need to work on managing stress effectively.

5. *What is the outlook for this career? Include salary expectations, job availability, and
future growth.
Example: Nursing is a growing field, with a projected 15% increase in demand over
the next decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

6. What do you think you will enjoy most about this career? What might you
enjoy the least?
Example: I expect to enjoy making a positive impact on patients' lives. However, I may
find the long hours challenging.

7. *Where do you see yourself in this career in five and ten years?
Example: In five years, I hope to have gained significant experience in a hospital
setting. In ten years, I aim to be in a leadership role or specializing in a specific field of
nursing.

3) Conclusion (labeled "Conclusion")

Summarize the key points from your introduction and answers. Italicize the topic sentence
of your conclusion. End with a reflection on your career choice’s potential and your future
in it.
Example:
Overall, nursing is a dynamic and growing career that offers numerous opportunities for
personal and professional growth.

4) Works Cited

Create a separate Works Cited page following MLA format. You must use a minimum of
three sources. At least one should be a non-electronic source (such as a book, journal, or
magazine). Properly list each source you referenced in the answers, including any websites.

Part II: The Interview

Start your search for someone to interview early. Select an individual currently working in
your chosen field and conduct an informational interview. Use the provided Information
Interview handout to guide your questions, or modify the questions to better suit your
interests.

Note: The information gathered from this interview will be used in your written report. Be
sure to attach the completed top section of the Information Interview handout (not the
questions) when submitting your report.

Career Research Project Report Outline:

1. Career Project Report:

o Introduction (thesis/topic paragraph)

o Supporting Details (answers to the seven questions)

o Conclusion (summary of findings and final thoughts)

o Interview (summary of your interview with a professional in your field)

2. Works Cited (on a separate page, properly formatted)

3. Writing Center Revision:

Your project must be revised by the Writing Center before submission. Set up an
