Reflection on the poster that I have created to summarise and
highlight my ideas for my chosen research proposal: I recognise the
need for fully supported examples that allow the reader to consider both
positive and negative portrayals of mental health issues in contemporary
television shows.
I consider the poster that I have created to be eye catching by using a
title that grabs the reader's attention at once: 'Unmasking Mental Health'.
This is a nod to the stigma and shame that people associate with mental
health issues. I have used pictures to highlight and show the specific
shows that will be the focus of the research project (case studies).
The feedback from my proposal said that I had included significant
information on a 'worthy topic'. However, the feedback also suggested
that my focus needs to be more succinct. I have therefore decided to
clarify my method, which will be a Humanities based dissertation. I have
also narrowed the focus by saying that my aim will be to explore how the
use of satire in TV and film addresses mental health issues. I intend to
focus on the key area of comedy and have therefore chosen and displayed
four specific comedy shows on my poster: ‘Peep Show’, ‘The Bear’, ‘Beef’
and ‘Bojack Horseman’.
I have used bullet points to list the positive and negative ways that mental
health can be represented in the media which will allow a viewer to grasp
the key points quickly and efficiently. I have considered the use of colour
and used cool subdued colours like blues and greens which are colours
associated with soothing and calming. I could have added some brighter
colours like yellow and red to further stimulate warmth and happiness.
I have included Harvard referencing for the selected quotes on my poster.
However, I would consider that in order to develop my work further I must
do greater reading around my research project topic.
