Synopsis
Synopsis
The story tells how Meursault, a Frenchman who now
lives in Algeria learns of the death of his mother, who
has been living in a retirement home. At her funeral, he
doesn't express any emotions of grief.
A few weeks later, on the beach, he kills a man with a
gun and ends up in jail awaiting trial.
Synopsis
“It is quite simple”
“Never in all my experience have I known a
soul so case-hardened as yours. All the
criminals who have come before me until now
wept when they saw this symbol of our Lord’s
sufferings.”
Main characters
Main characters
Meursault: he is the protagonist of the story. He is a
person indifferent to society and what happens
around him. I would say that he has hardly any
feelings. He is totally sincere and is satisfied with very
little.
Meursault’s mother: her death makes everything
start.
Raimundo Sintés: he is a neighbor of Meursault. He
physically and psychologically harms his Arab lover.
He gets Meursault into his problems with a band of
Arabs trying to take revenge on him.
Main characters
María Cardona: she meets Meursault one day after
her mother's funeral and they begin a sexual
relationship. She is smiling and attractive and seems
to be in love with Meursault.
Masson: he is the owner of the beach house where
they go and Meursault kills the Arab.
Salamano: he is an old man who routinely walks his
dog. He abuses him but loves him too. When he loses
his dog, he asks Meursault for advice.
Philosophical ideas and
questions
Philosophical ideas and
questions
With Meursault we see that nothing is important
enough to take the trouble to pay attention to, but
then, what is the motivation of a man to get up every
morning?
To what extent is Meursault's behavior and way of
being beneficial to man?
If everyone were like Meursault, would the world stop
because of the indifference?
My opinion
My opinion
Honestly, I did not like the book at all. I had a hard
time reading it and the truth is that none of the
characters I like. I did not like the end of the story
and I do not think it makes much sense.
I do not think that it represents society because it
is a very extremist book, practically no one is like
Meursault in real life.
I would not recommend the book.
