Have you ever felt that there aren't enough hours in the day? These days we have to do our jobs,
look after our homes, save energy to help the environment, and do exercise to stay healthy! Like many of us,
Alex Gadsden never had enough time. He ran a business and a home and needed to lose weight. So he
decided to do something about it. He invented the cycle washer. The 29-year-old now starts each day with a

3
45-minute cycle ride. He not only feels healthier but he saves on his energy bills and does the washing too.
He said, "It gives the user a good workout. I've only used it for two weeks but I've already noticed a
difference." "I tend to get up at around six-thirty now and get straight on the cycle washer. I keep it in the
garden, so it's nice to get out in the fresh air. Afterwards, I feel full of energy. Then I generally have
breakfast and a shower and I really feel ready to start the day." The green washing machine uses 25 litres of
water a wash, and takes enough clothes to fill a carrier bag. He normally cycles for 25 minutes to wash the
clothes, and then for another 20 minutes to dry them. And it doesn't use any electricity, of course. Mr
Gadsden, the boss of a cleaning company, believes his machine could become very popular. With an
invention which cleans your clothes, keeps you fit and reduces your electricity bill, he may well be right.

D. Alex's machine isn't effective in terms of cleaning the clothes.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 34 to 40.
Los Angeles dancer, Brian Perez, was eating out with his friends one evening when suddenly
everyone went quiet. To his horror, he saw that the reason for this was that people were checking their
phones. Realising he had to do something to stop this, Brian made a rather daring suggestion. What if they
all put their gadgets in a pile in the middle of the table until they had finished the meal? If anyone picked up
their phone, that person would have to pay the whole bill. And so, it is said, the game of 'phone stacking' was
born.
The necessity for action like this highlights a major problem in today's society: our inability to
disconnect from technology. But while Brian's idea deals with the obsession in a social context, measures
also need to be taken at home. Some people drop their smartphones into a box the moment they arrive home,
which gives them the chance to interact with the people they live with. The fact that the phone cannot be
heard - it is on silent - nor seen - the flashing lights are hidden by the box - means that they are no longer
tempted to use it.
A less drastic solution is to ban electronic devices at certain times of day when the whole family is
likely to be together, for example at meal times. This can be hard for everyone, from teenagers desperate to
text friends to parents unable to switch off from work. On a normal day, however, dinner takes less than an
hour, and the benefits of exchanging opinions and anecdotes with the rest of the family certainly makes up
for the time spent offline.
Taking a break from technology is one thing, but knowing when to turn off a device is another.
Time seems to stand still in the virtual world, and before you know it, you find that it is three o'clock in the
morning. This is where a digital curfew comes in handy, a set time when all devices must be put away.
Evenings without technology are usually nice and peaceful and make a more agreeable end to the day. And
then it's time for bed. One of the best ways of ensuring you can sleep at night is to ban electronic devices
altogether from the bedroom. Lying next to a machine bursting with information is far from relaxing, and the
sounds it emits during the night can easily wake you up. With technology out of the room, a line has been
drawn between daytime and sleep time, which enables us to switch off ourselves and drift off to sleep.
Question 34: Which best serves as the title for the passage?
4

Worse?

Question 38: The word “ban” in paragraph 3 is opposite in meaning to ______.

Question 39: Which of the following statements is true, according to the passage?
A. People choose not to use their phones at home so that they can talk to other members.
B. Meal times are the most suitable for the whole family to use phones together.
C. Teenagers can find it easier to turn off their phones compared to their parents.
D. Brian's idea is not new in terms of making people less dependent on technology.
Question 40: Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Having a conversation at dinner definitely strengthens the bonds among family members.
B. Using electronic gadgets at bedtime is likely to deprive yourself of having a good sleep.
C. People are more pleasant to talk with when they use technology in the evenings.
D. The line between daytime and sleep time has become increasingly blurred.

Many children have music classes when they attend school. And it is thought that music can help them
learn other subjects better. Research has shown that it can improve children’s performances in certain
subjects.
Some studies have shown that music training can help you understand your own language better. It
could also help you with learning a second one. Moreover, young people who have studied music also seem
to get higher scores in other subjects like maths. So it could be that these school subjects are connected in
some way.

13
Music also helps you think of new ideas, and believe more in yourself. If you are learning the guitar, for
example, it can be really exciting when you are able to start composing your own pieces of music. One of
the biggest benefits, of course, is that listening to music can reduce your stress. And composing music can
make you feel the same way. Maybe your musical knowledge will even open up a great career path for you
in the future.

answer to each of the questions.
A survey into the media habits of teenagers in the USA reveals some surprising statistics. The average
teenager spends an incredible eleven hours each day on their mobile phones, computers, games consoles or
TVs. That's more hours than they are awake outside school time! How are they able to do this? The answer,
of course, is multitasking.
The results of the survey came as no surprise to fifteen-year-old participant Jake Kendall. He told
researchers that he multitasked every second that he was online. He said that he was completing their survey
at the same time as watching a TV show, chatting to friends online and reading reviews of the latest film
releases. For sixteen-year-old Marisa Sanchez, the survey simply confirmed the facts. She said that she had
watched two hours of TV in the three hours since the end of school, and also researched her homework about
volcanoes, played an online game for two hours, and arranged her weekend plans by texting friends.
Some experts are worried about the survey results. Sylvia de Lupis of the Family Action Institute told
our reporter that teenagers would have difficulties because of their multitasking habits. She added that, as
adults, they would struggle to focus their attention. However, Dr. Michael Rich from the Center on Media
and Child Health said that worries about multitasking had become pointless a long time ago, and that high
levels of media use were now a part of young people's environment, 'like the air that they breathe, the water
that they drink and the food that they eat'.

Question 34: Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Teens: More Media Use Than Hours in The Day
B. The Art of Multitasking: A to Z for Teens
C. Teens: Learning through Media

14
D. Multitasking - Part of Teens' Everyday Life

Question 36: The word "reviews" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. comments B. plots C. discussions D. complaints
Question 37: The word “they” in paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A. habits B. adults C. difficulties D. teenagers
Question 38: The word "pointless" in paragraph 3 is opposite in meaning to ________.
A. useful B. invaluable C. worthless D. ineffective
Question 39: Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. An average teen in America spends nearly half a day using media.
B. Marisa Sanchez could complete her school assignment and relax at a time.
C. Dr. Michael Rich expected teenagers to get distracted due to multitasking
D. Frequent media use is possibly a matter of course to young people.
Question 40: Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Family Action Institute must work to stop multitasking.
B. Young people should concentrate on only one medium at a time.
C. Jake Kendall and Marisa Sanchez got good academic results.
D. Youngsters' multitasking habits in media use meet with mixed reactions from the public.

One way of training for your future occupation in Germany is by pursuing a dual vocational training
programme. Such programmes offer plenty of opportunity for on-the-job training and work experience.
Programmes usually last between two and three and a half years and comprise theoretical as well as practical
elements. You will spend one or two days a week, or several weeks at once, at a vocational school where
you will acquire the theoretical knowledge that you will need in your future occupation. The rest of the time
will be spent at a company. There you get to apply your newly acquired knowledge in practice, for example
by learning to operate machinery. You will get to know what your company does, learn how it operates and
find out if you can see yourself working there after completing your training.
This combination of theory and practice gives you a real head start into your job: by the time you have
completed your training, you will not only have the required technical knowledge, but you will also have
hands-on experience in your job. There are around 350 officially recognised training programmes in
Germany, so chances are good that one of them will suit your interests and talents. You can find out which
one that might be by visiting one of the jobs and vocational training fairs which are organised in many
German cities at different times in the year.
Employment prospects for students who have completed a dual vocational training programme are very
good. This is one of the reasons why this kind of training is very popular with young Germans: around two
thirds of all students leaving school go on to start a vocational training programme.

answer to each of the questions.
Attracting users to social networking sites and cloud computing sites is all about building trust. However,
if recent news is anything to go by, consumers would be right to consider that the trust they have put into the
Internet companies that run these services has been betrayed.
Between 2006 and the beginning of 2010, search engine giant Google started a project to map and
digitally photograph every road in every major city in more than 30 countries for its product Google Street
View. But images, it appears, is not all that the Streetview cars collected. It now turns out that Google
collected over six hundred Gigabytes of data from users of public and unprotected Wi-Fi access routers -
which included Web pages visited and emails. All this was collected without the prior knowledge or
permission of the router owners.
But most criticism surrounding data privacy is currently reserved for Facebook, which has faced an
extreme anger from consumers when millions of users suddenly found their private details exposed and
searchable on Google, Bing and Yahoo. Facebook, whose privacy policies have come under attack both at

19
home and abroad, now faces a stiff fine for storing non-users' personal data without their permission.
Founder Mark Zuckerberg appears to be relenting and is now beefing up security.
The issue came to the fore in recent months among concern that Facebook's confusing privacy settings
were making it possible for Internet stalkers, cyber criminals and even nosy neighbours to gain a wealth of
information about its users without their knowledge or permission.
What all these companies deal in is trust. Without trust, we would not allow them access to our private
information. Therefore, it's important that they maintain our trust. If social networking becomes increasingly
important to companies such as Google, Apple and Microsoft, they will have to be careful not to violate their
users' trust in the future.

climate livable Without it, the Earth's surface would be an average of about 60 degrees Fahrenheit cooler.
Scientists often use the term "climate change" instead of global warming. This is because as the Earth's
average temperature climbs, winds and ocean currents move heat around the globe in ways that can cool
some areas, warm others and (23) ________ and snow falling. As a result, the climate changes differently
in different areas.

Successful students often do the followings while studying. First, they have an overview before reading.
Next, they look for important information and pay greater attention to it (which often needs jumping forward
or backward to process information). They also relate important points to one another. Also, they activate
and use their prior knowledge. When they realize that their understanding is not good, they do not wait to
change strategies. Last, they can monitor understanding and take action to correct or "fix up" mistakes in
comprehension.
Conversely, students with low academic achievement often demonstrate ineffective study skills. They
tend to assume a passive role, in learning and rely on others (e.g., teachers, parents) to monitor their
studying, for example, low-achieving students often do not monitor their understanding of content; they may
not be aware of the purpose of studying; and they show little evidence of looking back, or employing "fix-
up" strategies to fix understanding problems. Students who struggle with learning new information seem to
be unaware that they must extent effort beyond simply reading the content to understand and remember it.
Children with learning disabilities do not plan and judge the quality of their studying. Their studying may be
disorganized. Students with learning problems face challenges with personal organization as well. They
often have difficulty keeping track of materials and assignments, following directions, and completing work
on time. Unlike good students who employ a variety of study skills in a flexible yet purposeful manner, low-
achieving students use a restricted range of study skills. They cannot explain why good study strategies are
important for learning; and they tend to use the same, often ineffective study approach for all learning tasks,
ignoring task content, structure or difficulty.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answers to each of the questions from 34 to 40.
The world's population reached five billion on the day I was born. That was in Indonesia back in 1987,
and my parents were amazed that there were so many people on the planet. However, since then
the population has continued to increase.
The growth of our human population is extraordinary. For more than two million years, humans lived
with no permanent home, finding plants to eat and hunting animals for meat. Then, just 10,000 years ago,
we invented agriculture. At that time, there were only about five million humans, but this figure quickly
doubled. The population reached a billion in 1805, and since then it has multiplied seven times.
The human population has never been bigger, but in some ways the planet seems to be getting smaller.
In the past, travellers from Europe to Indonesia spent months at sea. Now you just have to sit on a plane
for a few hours. When you arrived in another country a hundred years ago, you saw unfamiliar styles of
clothing and architecture and discovered a completely different culture. In many places today, clothing
and new buildings are very similar, and people enjoy the same sports, music, films and TV shows. We also
buy the same products from huge, global companies. In our different continents, we are starting to live the
same lives. Even the languages that we use are becoming more global. There are around seven thousand
languages in use today, but the number is decreasing fast.
The same thing is happening around the world. Experts think that the number of different languages
will halve to just 3,500 by the end of this century. Where will it stop? Will there be a time in the future
when Earth's billions all speak just one language, and there are no cultural differences to divide
us? Perhaps the planet would be more peaceful if this happened, but I must admit that the idea is
quite depressing. I prefer to think that, as our population grows, we can celebrate not the
similarity but the fascinating diversity of the human race.
(Adapted from Insight by Roberts and Sayer)

If you’re an Australian Facebook user who loves to share the news on your timeline, you may have
noticed something different recently: You can’t.
In the next few days, though, things should go back to normal. Less than a week after suddenly
banning news links for Australian users and shutting down Australian news pages to protest an upcoming
law, Facebook says it’s gotten reassurances from the Australian government that it won’t be forced to pay
publishers but will instead be given the chance to negotiate agreements with them — which it’s already
starting to do. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Facebook has agreed to pay the major Australian
media company Seven West Media for news content and is in negotiations with another called Nine
Entertainment.
Australia has now passed the News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code, which
could force Facebook and Google to pay publishers if they host their content. The law is a response to
years-long complaints from news outlets around the world about the role that Google and Facebook — and
their mammoth digital ad businesses — have played in the decline of journalism and the decimation of its
business model in the internet age. The two companies responded to the then-potential law in very different
ways: Google made deals with Australian news publishers; Facebook decided to cut them off entirely.
After a few days of Australians seeing what Facebook was like without the news, a sizable amount of
worldwide backlash against the company, and talks with the Australian government that resulted in a few
last-minute changes to the law, Facebook decided that the new terms were good enough for its ban to end.
The law passed a few days later.
Previously, Facebook had banned all users from sharing links to Australian news sources, Australian
publications’ pages from hosting any of their own content, and Australian users from sharing any news links,
Australian or international.
Question 34: Which best serves as the title for the passage?
A. News Links for Australian Users
B. Australia and The News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code
C. A Sizable Amount of Worldwide Backlash Against A Company
D. Why Facebook Banned and Then Unbanned News in Australia
Question 35: The word “them” in paragraph 2 refers to ______.

Question 36: In paragraph 2, Facebook suddenly banned news links for Australian users to ______.
A. protest an upcoming law
B. get reassurances from the Australian government
C. protect Australian news pages
D. negotiate agreements with publishers
Question 37: The word “major” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. public B. stupid C. main D. stylish

29
Question 38: The word “content” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. word B. article C. force D. name
Question 39: Which of the following is NOT true, according to the passage?
A. Facebook has agreed to pay Seven West Media for news content.
B. Google and Facebook responded to the law differently.
C. The laws issued by Australian government was changed at the last minute.
D. Facebook has never banned users from sharing links to Australian news sources.
Question 40: Which of the following can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. Australians will never see the news on Facebook.
B. Facebook ended its ban thanks to acceptable teams, and things went back to normal.
C. There was a huge amount of worldwide protest against the Australian government.
D. Australian government’s law shouldn’t have been changed at the last minute.

Many people see large urban cities as a wonder of human imagination and creativity. They represent how far
the human population has come in terms of community development. Many positive things come from
urbanization, but there are also negatives. This article will discuss and present data on the implications of
urbanization on the physical health of humans living in these large urban areas.
As it would be expected, developing countries tend to see more negative physical health effects than modern
countries in regard to urbanization. One example of a developing country experiencing these problems is
China. China is a country that in the past 30-40 years went from being an agrarian based society to a
significant industrialized country. This industrialization has in effect caused the need for more centralized
cities, centralized meaning having lots of jobs and living spaces within a close proximity. This is what is
known as urbanization. In most recent decades, since China's change to being more of an industrial based
economy, the country has experienced record high numbers of people migrating within its borders. In effect,
the number of cities with over 500,000 people has more than doubled. These migrations are typically of

31
people from rural areas of China moving to the new urban areas. Due to this large influx in the urban
population, there are many possibilities for health challenges among these people.
One very common and fairly obvious negative aspect of highly congested urban areas is air pollution. Air
pollution is defined as any harmful substance being suspended in the air. This could include particulate
matter, most commonly attributed to industrial plants and refineries waste, or chemicals like CO2 or
Methane (which are also products of plants and refineries as well as cars and other modes of transportation).
Due to a vast number of people in these urbanized cities, the air pollution is known to be very extreme.
These conditions can lead to many different health problems such as: Asthma, cardiovascular problems or
disease, and different types of cancer (most commonly lung cancer). When exposed to these conditions for a
prolonged period of time, one can experience even more detrimental health effects like: the acceleration of
aging, loss of lung capacity and health, being more susceptible to respiratory diseases, and a shortened life
span.
Another way that urbanization affects the populations' health is people's change in diet. For instance, urban
cities tend to have lots of accessible, quick, and easy to get food. This food is also more than likely not as
high quality as well as contains a large amount of sodium and sugar. Because this food is so accessible,
people tend to eat it more. This increase in consumption of low quality food can then lead to diabetes,
hypertension, heart disease, obesity, or many other health conditions.
(Adapted from https://medium.com)
Câu 7. Why are urban populations easy to get diseases from food, according to the last paragraph?
A. Because of the change in people's diet.
B. Because this food is so delicious that people have a tendency to eat more than normal.
C. Because the way people get this food is rather accessible, quick and easy.
D. Because of the low quality and the high proportion of sodium and sugar in this food.
Câu 8. The word "detrimental" in paragraph 3 is opposite in meaning to ___________.

Câu 10. What does the phrase "these problems" in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. industrialized countries B. lots of jobs and living spaces
C. negative physical health effects D. immigrants
Câu 11. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. One of the negative health effects comes from the overpopulation in industrialized countries.
B. People in developed countries suffer less harmful health effects from urbanization than those in
developing nations.
C. The bad health effects from urbanization are not greater than the benefits it brings to people in urban
cities.
D. Living in urban areas for a long time will make the life expectancy of inhabitants lengthen.

National parks play a highly valuable role in documenting climate change. Researchers have utilized the vast
tracts of pristine wilderness to collect data on species and habitats. At first, they collected observational data
on foot; now, they use sophisticated methods such as aerial surveillance with drones like those used in
Northrop Grumman's Wildlife Challenge to collect information on polar bears.
Observational longitudinal data collection shows the effects of climate change that impact vegetation and
animal species. The pika is the perfect example of an animal who may need to be relocated from the parks
due to climate change, as described in Smithsonian Magazine. The park service is taking this very seriously.
"It is openly discussing the possibility of "assisted migration": manually relocating some animals and plants
if it turns out they can't survive within the park's changing landscapes."
National park research also documents glacier retreat, finding that some ice fields have lost as much as 85
percent in the last five decades, according to U.S. Geological Survey. Glacier Park might be recognizable
only as a historical name by 2030, it projects. It's not just glaciers retreating. The Conversation notes that
national park data shows that trees are also affected by climate change: "Climate change is killing trees due
to increased drought, changes in wildfire patterns and increased bark beetle infestations. Tracking of trees in
… national parks has contributed to a database that revealed how climate change has doubled tree mortality
since 1955 across the western United States."
We should not forget that at its inception, the National Parks Service's long-term intention was to protect the
parks and "leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."

answer to each of the following questions.

Today we hear more and more about the importance of getting enough sleep. Sleep can give energy to
both our bodies and our brains. It can also affect our feelings, behaviour, and memory.
Studies have shown that people in some countries spend less time sleeping and more time working. But
our bodies cannot work well without enough sleep. Losing just one or two hours of sleep a night, over a long
period of time, can badly affect our health. We cannot work for many hours; we can get angry easily; and we
can even lose our IQ points. That explains why, without enough sleep, an intelligent person may have
difficulty doing daily tasks.
Studies have also shown that the time of year seems to affect how much sleep we need. People usually
sleep longer in the winter, sometimes as much as 14 hours a night. However, in the summer, they sometimes
sleep as little as six hours, without having any problems.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the following questions.

One way of training for your future occupation in Germany is by pursuing a dual vocational training
programme. Such programmes offer plenty of opportunities for on-the-job training and work experience.
You will get to know what your company does, learn how it operates, and
find out if you can see yourself working there after completing your training.

Employment prospects for students who have completed a dual vocational training programme are
very good. This is one of the reasons why this kind of training is very popular with young Germans: around
two thirds of all students leaving school go on to start a vocational training programme.

PLASTIC AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Plastic is a material we use every day. The first plastics were made more than 100 years ago
from parts of plants. Plastics are now made from oil, coal and natural gas. We are using up these things so
fast that the Earth's supplies may run out. Because of this, scientists are investigating new ideas for making
plastics from plants such as sweet potato, bamboo and flax.
Things made from plastic can be useful for people but bad for the environment. Some plastics can
last for a long time without wearing out, and can be difficult to get rid of when not needed. They can remain
in rubbish dumps called landfill sites for hundreds of years. Landfills can be smelly, ugly, and harmful to our
planet.
Recycling is a good way to get rid of unwanted plastics. Recycled waste materials can be used
again to make new products. This can be difficult as different types of plastic need to be recycled in different
ways. Some kinds of plastics can be melted down and used to make new things such as bags and bottles.
Others can be made into fibres (strands of material) for clothing.
Another way to protect the environment is to use canvas bags for shopping rather than plastic
ones. A lot of plastic objects can also be reused. Plastic bottles can be refilled many times, rather than
throwing them away once they are empty. Unwanted plastic goods such as CDs and toys can be sold or
given away to charity shops.
Question 10. According to the passage, things made from plastic are bad for our environment because
_____.
A. they are very convenient for people to use in different purposes.
B. people reuse plastic objects before recycling them.
C. they are a danger to marine life such as whales, turtles and so on.
D. plastics can exist for a long time without decomposing.
Question 11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Plastic: effects and solutions to the problem.

C. The ways to reduce the harm of plastics on the environment.
D. The history of plastic and its usefulness.
Question 12. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to protect the
environment?
A. using canvas bags for shopping instead of plastic ones B. reusing plastic things

Healthy mind, healthy body
"A healthy mind lives in a healthy body" is a saying (15)_______ is believed to have often been
used by the ancient Greeks. Thousands of years later, the same idea still applies. According to health experts,

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
When naming a child, some parents seem to choose a name based simply on their personal preference.
In other families, grandparents or professional name-makers come up with a child's name. And in some
cases, the time of a child's birth influences how the child's name is determined.
In many European cultures, names are typically chosen by parents. Parents' choice for their child's name
may be based on names of relatives or ancestors within their particular family. For example, in Italy,
children are traditionally named after their grandparents. The parents generally use the father's parents'
names first. If they have more children, then they will use the mother's parents' names. Similarly, some
people in Eastern Europe name their children after relatives who have died. This tradition is seen as a means
to protect the child from the Angel of Death.
Traditionally in some Asian countries, a child's grandfather or a fortune-teller chooses the child's name. In
contrast to the tradition of naming children after relatives, the child's name is chosen to influence the child's
character. For example, names may be based on a connection to certain elements such as fire, water, earth,
wood, or metal. Or the name might include a written character meaning beauty, strength, or kindness.
In certain African cultures, when a child is born plays a large part in determining the child's name. In
Ghana's Akan culture, the day a child is born determines the child's name. But each day has different names
for boys and girls. For instance, a boy born on Friday is named Kofi, whereas a girl born on the same day is
named Afua. Both Kofi and Afua are names meaning "wanderer" or "explorer." Children with these names
are seen as travelers.
No matter where the name comes from, a child's name is the first gift in life. Whether it is chosen
according to preference or dictated by tradition, the name reflects something about a child's culture. For that
reason, all names should be treasured and respected.

43
Question 20. Which of the following can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. The arrival time of a child is an unimportant factor in deciding his or her name.
B. No matter how a child's name is chosen, it is not related to his or her culture.
C. Children receive the same name if they are born on the same day.
