The Blue Jackal
Once, there lived a jackal named Chandarava. One day, he wandered into a nearby village in search of
food. The village dogs saw him and surrounded him, barking and attacking. The jackal ran to save
himself, chased by the dogs. In his attempt to escape, he entered a washerman’s house and jumped into a
vat of blue dye. His entire body turned blue, and he no longer looked like a jackal.
Frustrated, he left the house. The dogs, unable to recognize him, ran away in fear. The jackal returned to
the jungle, but the blue dye wouldn’t come off. The jungle animals, terrified of the strange blue creature,
fled as well. Seeing this, the jackal called out, claiming, “Brahma made me and crowned me the King of
all three worlds to protect you. Come and live in peace under my protection.”
The animals believed him, gathered as his subjects, and followed his commands. He assigned tasks to
each animal, especially on how to serve him. Fearing recognition, he chased away the other jackals. The
lions and tigers hunted food for him, and he distributed it among the animals, keeping some for himself.
Thus, he ruled the jungle for some time, and peace prevailed.
One evening, the jackal heard other jackals howling in the distance. Unable to resist, he howled too,
overwhelmed with emotion. The lions and other animals, realizing his true identity, were furious at being
deceived. They caught him and punished him severely.
This story teaches that dishonesty and deception can only lead to temporary success, but the truth always
comes out.
