Introduction
* Cooperative Movement in india was introduced
as a state policy.
* The people of india were in a lot of trouble due
to the British rule. They exported goods from
india to abroad and imported goods from
england thereby losing the jobs of small
workers .
* So the workers farmed for living ,they needed
money to farm, so they suffered losses in
farming as well .
* In 1850 Nidhi or mutual loan association
established by UP, Bengal,Madrass to help
farmers,But did not solve the problems of
farmers they suffered hunger and poverty
* Finally, Government decided to help
farmers.
The government propagated :
☆ Deccan Agricultural relief Act -
1879
☆ Land improvement loan Act - 1883
☆ Agricultural loan Act - 1884
* This Land improvement loan Act
and Agricultural loan Act are called
"TACCAVI Law "
* These legislation (TACCAVI LAW )
were mainly intended to provide
Agricultural loan to farmers directly
from the government .

Nicholson
* The Madrass
Government deputed sir
Frederick Nicholson to
Europe for studying
cooperative movement.
in 1892
* He submitted two
volumes of report titled
"FIND RAIFFEISEN "
☆ 1st in 1895
☆ 2nd in 1897
* The first Cooperative credit societies Act was
passed in 1904 " The Cooperative credit societies
Act 1904 "It is the first Cooperative legislation in
india ,Based on British friendly society Act1896.
* Frederick Nicholson is considered as the Father of
Indian Cooperative Movement .

● stages of cooperative movement in pre -
independence era can be classified into five
phases:
1.Period of Experiment [ 1904 -1911]
2.Period of Rapid Expansion [1912-1918]
3.Period of unplanned Expansion [1919-1928]
4.perod of consolidation and Re-organisation
[1929 - 1937]
5.Period of Recovery [1938 - 1947]
