1. Alight upon (Phrasal verb) - अचानक से मिल जाना –find by chance; to
suddenly notice or think of something,

Example-
1) Her eyes alighted upon an extraordinary sight.
2) His mind alighted upon several possible answers.

Synonyms – bump into, come across, come upon, confront, detect

2. Paean (noun) – प्रशं सात्मक गीत - a song, film, or piece of writing that praises
someone or something very enthusiastically

Example-
1) The film is paean to adolescent love.
2) After winning the battle the warriors gathered around and sung a paean.

Synonyms - eulogy, praise, tribute, encomium.

Hint- Paean= “pian+ o”, which is used in praise songs.

3. Quell (verb) – शां त, दबाना - to stop something, especially by using force

Example-
1) Extra police were called to quell the disturbance.
2) Police quelled the riot.

Synonyms- crush, overpower, overcome, defeat, conquer, quench, calm,


pacify

Hint - quell sounds similar to yell and we yell to suppress someone or make
him/her quite

4. Supersede (verb) - जगह लेना, दू सरे का अधिकार ले लेना - to replace something,
especially something older or more old-fashioned

Example-
1) Most of the old road has been superseded by the great interstate
highways.
2) Wireless broadband could supersede satellite radio one day.

Synonyms - cut out, displace, relieve, replace, substitute, supplant

Hint- When a SUPER new thing arrives, we REPLACE /SET ASIDE the old
thing because it is OBSOLETE.

5. Coercion (noun) – ज़ोर-ज़बरदस्ती - the use of force to persuade someone to


do something that they are unwilling to do.

Example-
1) It was vital that the elections should be free of coercion or intimidation.
2) The school bully used coercion to force the other kids to give him their
lunch money.

Synonyms - force, pressure, threats, bullying

Hint- Coerce sounds like Force. When somebody is coercing you, they are
forcing you to do something.

6. Farce (noun) - ढोंग,चलताऊ ढं ग से आयोधजत कोई गंभीर या महत्वपू र्ण कायण क्रम –
something important or serious that is not organized well or treated with
respect

Example-
1) No one had prepared anything so the meeting was a bit of a farce.

- बेतुकी पररस्स्िधतयों से पूर्ण हास्यजनक नाटक, a funny play for the theatre full of
ridiculous situations

Example-
1) The play suddenly changes from farce to tragedy

Synonyms - absurdity, sham, charade, mockery

Hint - Guys use to say in hindi =PHAAD(farce) comedy thi yaar.

7. Furore (noun) - तीव्र उत्तेजना - a very angry or excited reaction by people to


something

Example-
1) The government's decision to raise taxes has caused a great furore.
2) the furore over his latest film.

Synonyms- commotion, excitement, disturbance, outcry, fury, flap, frenzy,


uproar.

Hint- Furore – People start roaring like a lion, it means they are protesting.

8. Purge (verb/noun) - शुद्ध करना – to get rid of people from an organization


because you do not agree with them

Example-
1) Party leaders have undertaken to purge the party of extremists.

-rid (someone or something) of an unwanted quality, condition, or feeling

Example –
1) He closed his eyes and lay still, trying to purge his mind of anxiety.

Synonyms - cleanse, purify, sanctify

Hint - It’s the opposite of 'merge', merge means to mix something into
another and purge means get rid of something.

9. Punitive (adj.)- दण्ड संबंधी - intended as a punishment


Example-
1) The UN has imposed punitive sanctions on the invading country.
2) Punitive taxes/tariffs/laws.

Synonyms- penal, disciplinary, corrective, correction, punitory, retaliatory,


revengeful.

Hint- PUNITive- Punish it

10. Welter (noun/verb)- a. (noun)- घालमेल- a large and especially badly


organized number of things

Example-
1) the welter of information available on the internet.
2) We are reducing the company's welter of development projects and will
streamline sales and marketing.
Synonyms- jumble, confusion, muddle, hotchpotch, mess, tangle, web.

b. (verb) -तड़पना-to roll about, writhe, or wallow

Example-
1) Pigs weltering about happily in the mud.
2) Mother told her son not to welter in pleasure and idleness.

Synonyms- roll, writhe, wallow.

Hint- I would remember it as ‘world tour’. So, you are planning for a world
tour, but ‘confused’ as where to start from.
