( Character Descriptions )

Simoun

 Simoun is the mysterious and wealthy jeweler who is actually Crisostomo


Ibarra from Noli Me Tangere, now consumed by anger and revenge. He
disguises himself as an ally of the Spanish government, but his true plan is to
create chaos and rebellion to overthrow the corrupt system. Simoun is
driven by personal pain — his father’s death, his lost love Maria Clara, and
the injustices suffered by his fellow Filipinos. Despite his intelligence and
influence, he becomes a symbol of how bitterness and vengeance can cloud
judgment.

 In today’s world, Simoun represents people who seek justice but are
consumed by their past traumas. His character shows the dangers of letting
anger dictate actions, but also the resilience of those who strive for change
despite overwhelming odds.

Basilio

 Basilio starts as a young boy in Noli Me Tangere who suffered through


tragedy, losing his family to violence and injustice. In El Filibusterismo, he
has grown into a hardworking medical student. He believes education is the
key to improving his life and helping his country, but he tries to avoid getting
involved in revolutionary activities. Basilio is patient and hopeful, but he
eventually realizes that personal succcess alone may not be enough to solve
the larger problems o f society.

 Today, Basilio reflects the struggles of students and professionals who face
poverty and systemic issues but remain hopeful for a better future. He shows
the importance of education and perseverance in achieving one’s goals, even
in the face of obstacles.

Kabesang Tales

 Kabesang Tales is a farmer who symbolizes the suffering of the Filipino


peasants during Spanish rule. He works hard to provide for his family but
loses his land to corrupt officials and greedy friars. His journey from a
peaceful, hardworking man to a rebellious fighter shows the frustration and
desperation of those oppressed by an unfair system.
 Kabesang Tales represents the marginalized sectors of society who are often
taken advantage of, such as farmers and laborers. His character is a reminder
of the need for fair treatment and justice for the working class, even in
modern times.

Padre Salvi

 Padre Salvi is a Spanish friar who represents the corrupt religious leaders of
the time. He uses his position to manipulate and control people for his
benefit, showing little regard for morality of justice. His hypocrisy and greed
make him one of the novel’s antagonists, and he symbolizes the oppressive
power of the church during the Spanish era.

 Today, Padre Salvi mirrors leaders or institutions that exploit their power
for selfish reasons. His character encourages people to question authority
and demand accountability from those in power.

Isagani

 Isagani is an idealistic young poet and a passionate advocate for reform. He


dreams of a peaceful society where Filipinos can freely express themselves
and achieve progress through education and cooperation. He loves Paulita
Gomez deeply, but their relationship becomes strained because of their
different values. Isagani is brave and outspoken but also deeply emotional,
making him relatable to anyone who has faced personal and societal
challenges.

 Isagani symbolizes the hope and energy of the youth. His character reminds
us of the importance of standing up for what we believe in and striving for a
better society, even when the odds are against us.

Paulita Gomez

 Paulita Gomez is a beautiful and charming young woman who becomes a


symbol of societal expectations. She is caught between her love for Isagani
and her desire for a stable, comfortable life. Ultimately, she chooses to marry
someone wealthier, showing how societal pressure and materialism can
influence personal decisions.

 Paulita reflects the struggles of people, especially women, who must balance
their personal desires with the expectations of their family and community.
Her character raises important questions about love, practicality, and
independence in relationships.
Padre Florentino

 Padre Florentino is a kind and patriotic Filipino priest who contrasts sharply
with Padre Salvi. He uses his position to promote justice and equality rather
than corruption. Though he is disillusioned by the greed and violence around
him, he remains hopeful for the future of the Filipino people. His wisdom and
humility make him a source of guidance for other characters.

 In modern times, Padre Florentino, represents ethical leaders who use their
influence to inspire and guide others. His character reminds us of the
importance of staying true to one’s values, even in difficult circumstances.
