Diversity Initiative Assignment

Tonight’s question and answer with Venus Williams was one of my favorite things I have
been able to participate/watch while being a student here at the University of Arkansas. Being
able to sit and listen to one of the most accomplished athletes and someone who has changes the
tennis world forever talk about how she has got there and achieved these things was amazing. I
enjoyed the time that she used to talk about how much her family means to her and how they
have always pushed her to become this version over herself and how she looked past some of
these times was very cool. She also said how she looks back at so many times in her life that in
the moment seemed like there were not these top times in her life but after the fact has realized
how blessed she is and how much those times mean to her; I really feel like I find myself
realizing this kind of thing a lot as.
Ms. Williams outlook on pressure and what it means to someone was also something that
I really enjoyed, and I believe can relate to and be a good thought process. She explained how
she looks at pressure to know that you are in the position to achieve something. Personally, I
never have thought about it in this way, but I really like this because it is true. The most stressful
situations usually are the ones when the most is on the line, meaning you can gain or achieve
something great. Also, she said pressure is something you must continue to practice, if you stop
it will become harder to deal with the next time, or if you continue in these high-pressure
situations, they will gradually become easier over time. Lastly, I really enjoyed when she was
talking about the things that she kind of has taken for granted over the years and she said being
able to play in front of everyone and how she hadn’t even fully understood the magnitude of the
events she was playing because she was so focused on her matches. I liked this because it shows
how to be great at something you have to be able to drown out the distractions and have what
you want to achieve as the only thing on your mind. Growing up watching Venus and her sister
play on TV, this was a great thing to be able to go listen to her and be able to understand what
makes someone elite in whatever they do.
