Q. 4. Discuss some of the Classical & Folk Dance Forms practised in India.

Classical Dance Forms : As Indian civilization evolved, several classical dance forms
emerged, each characterized by unique techniques, expressions and themes:

1. Bharatanatyam : Originating from Tamil Nadu, Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest

classical dance forms, traditionally performed by Devadasis in temples. It combines
intricate footwork, expressive hand gestures (mudras), and facial expressions to
convey stories from Hindu mythology.
2. Kathak : Kathak, which developed in northern India, blends storytelling through
dance with elements of drama. It evolved from the dance of wandering bards
(kathakars) and has a strong influence from Mughal culture, incorporating graceful
spins and intricate footwork.
3. Kathakali : This dance-drama from Kerala is known for its elaborate costumes and
detailed makeup. Originating in the 17th century, Kathakali portrays mythological
stories and epics, emphasizing facial expressions and mudras to convey emotions.
4. Kuchipudi : Hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Kuchipudi is a vibrant dance form that
combines dance and drama. It often features storytelling through expressive
movements and is known for its lively rhythms and lyrical expressions.
5. Odissi : Originating from Odisha, Odissi is characterized by its fluid movements and
sculpturesque poses. It is one of the oldest surviving dance forms and often draws
upon themes from Hindu scriptures.

Folk Dance Traditions : In addition to classical forms, India is home to a multitude of folk
dances that vary from region to region. These dances often reflect local culture, traditions,
and social themes. Notable examples include:

 Bhangra: A lively dance from Punjab, celebrating harvest and festive occasions.

 Garba: A traditional dance from Gujarat, performed during the Navratri festival.

 Ghoomar: A folk dance from Rajasthan, often performed by women in traditional

attire.

 Chhau: A martial dance form from Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, combining
elements of dance and storytelling.

 Bihu : The Bihu dance is an indigenous folk dance from the Indian state of Assam
related to the Bihu festival and an important part of Assamese culture. The dancing
style is characterized by brisk steps and rapid hand movements.
