Fast fashion is inexpensive clothing which is produced rapidly in response to the latest trend.
It is estimated that 100 billion items of clothing are made every year. This number is
expected to grow by 60 percent by 2030. However, the downside of this fashion industry is
its negative impact on the environment. First of all, the production of textiles requires a lot of
water. For example, it takes about 2,000 gallons of water to produce one pair of jeans. This
water is often polluted with poisonous chemicals which are used in the dyeing and finishing
process. The manufacturing process also produces a lot of air pollution which is caused by
the burning of fossil fuels to power factories and the release of chemicals into the air.
Moreover, fast fashion creates a vast amount of waste. Many of the clothes that are produced
are not worn very often, and are thrown away after a few wears. Clothing and textiles
currently make up at least 7% of the total amount of waste in global landfill space. Only 15
percent of them are recycled or donated, 19 percent are burnt, and the rest ends up in

The Amazon River, which begins in the Andes Mountains in Peru, is the source of twenty
percent of all water that enters the oceans worldwide. At 6,400 kilometres in length, it is the
second longest river in the world. During the rainy season, parts of the river are 190
kilometres wide. The Amazon River passes through the world's largest tropical rainforest.
The Amazon rainforest is home to the highest number of plant and animal species on Earth,
many of which are found nowhere else. There are 2.5 million kinds of insects, at least 3,000
kinds of fish, and one-fifth of all bird species in the world. The Amazon rainforest is
considered one of the world’s most important natural resources, as it plays a crucial role in
controlling the Earth’s climate and weather patterns. Unfortunately, the Amazon rainforest is
under threat from human activities. The clearing of land for agriculture, logging, and the
construction of roads and infrastructure has led to the destruction of 20 percent of the
Amazon rainforest over the last 40 years, and an additional 20 percent is at risk of being
destroyed. As deforestation continues and the effects of climate change increase, we run the
risk of losing this spectacular ecosystem for future generations.

during exams and when waiting for results. Exam stress can not only result in physical
symptoms like headaches, fatigue, or loss of appetite, but also create mental and emotional
effects such as anxiety, depression, or sleeplessness. Moreover, it can negatively affect their
academic performance. Causes of exam stress can arise from within, such as fear of failure,

Plastic is so frequently used today that it's hard to imagine life without it. However, plastic
has a serious impact on the environment. Unlike paper, fruit peel, or fabric, it can take more
than 400 years for plastic to break down. Therefore, fish often mistake plastic debris for food
and eat it, leading to deadly health problems. Animals and marine creatures can also become
trapped in plastic objects which then make it hard for them to move, eat or even breathe.
Moreover, plastic pollution can release toxic chemicals into the ecosystem, which can
negatively impact both wildlife and human health. However, there are many simple things
that we can all do to help put a stop to plastic pollution. First, reduce the amount of plastic
that we consume. Avoid using straws or plastic takeaway cups, and say no to plastic bags at
the store. Take along a fabric bag instead. Second, we need to reuse the plastic items that we
already have. Wash plastic containers and refill them. Use a lunch box rather than wrapping
meals in cling film. Lastly, recycle as much of your waste as possible.

Water pollution can be caused by a variety of things. Firstly, sewage is dumped directly into
the seas without being treated properly. This is a global problem, with equally significant
challenges in high-, middle-, and low-income countries. Sewage pollution has reduced the
water quality and posed several threats to human health. Secondly, cruise ships release a
large amount of garbage into the ocean every year. 40 percent of cruise ships depend on 30-
year-old waste treatment technology, leaving sewage with high levels of bacteria, heavy
metals and other pollutants that are harmful to aquatic life and people. The third reason is oil
spills. Oil spills happen in many different ways. Most of these spills are small and happen
accidentally, for example oil spills while refueling a ship. But these spills can still cause
damage, especially if they happen in sensitive environments. Large oil spills are disasters.

                                   Inventing a Capital City
The capital of a country is where the government of that country is located. In most
countries, the capital is the city with the biggest population. However, in 35 countries out of
195, this is not the case. In some cases, this is because another city is growing faster. But
more often, it is because the capital was moved from the largest city to a smaller one due to a
political decision.
For example, the largest city in Vietnam is Ho Chi Minh City, with one million more people
than Hanoi, the capital. In 1976, Hanoi became the capital of the united North and South
Vietnam.
The reason for moving has often been that there are just too many people in the capital. This
was why the government of Brazil built a new capital, Brasilia, in the centre of the country,
to replace Rio de Janeiro, which is on the coast, in 1960. It was also one of the reasons for
moving the capital of Nigeria from Lagos to Abuja in 1991. However, in both cases, there
were other reasons. The government of Brazil felt that moving the capital would encourage
growth in areas away from the coast. In Nigeria, after a lot of problems between the three
main ethnic groups, the government wanted the capital in an area not controlled by any one
group.

Question 34. The writer makes a link between Brazil and Nigeria because .............

indicate the correct answer to the following questions.
In 1907, a soldier in the British Army called Baden-Powell had the idea of teaching boys
some of the skills of living outdoors. He took a group of boys to an island near the south
coast of England and taught them how to follow wild animals quietly, camp in the woods,
cook food on a campfire and even the amazing skill of making fire without matches. These
skills were not necessary for the boys, but Baden-Powell saw the activities as a way to teach
young people to work together. He put the boys in a uniform like a soldier.
A scout is someone who goes out and finds things for people, especially soldiers, like water,
food and places to stay. After Baden-Powell wrote a book in 1908 called Scouting for Boys,
small scout organisations began to appear around England. When Baden-Powell held a
meeting for all these organisations in 1909, some girls came wearing uniforms like the boys
and calling themselves ‘girl scouts’. One year later, Baden-Powell started two national
organisations, one for boys, which he called ‘Scouts’, and one for girls, which he called
‘Guides’.
The number of groups for boys and girls grew very quickly in Britain and then, just as
quickly, around the world. Nowadays, there are more than 30 million scouts and guides in
over 150 countries.

                                         What Can I Say?
Imagine you are introduced to a stranger at a party. You know he is British, but that is all you
know about him. You want to respect the customs and habits of his culture, so what is
acceptable for you to talk about?
British people normally expect the conversation to start with a comment about the weather. If
it has been wet, you could say, ‘What terrible weather we’re having!’ to which he would
probably reply, ‘Awful! I wonder if it will ever stop raining.’ If it has been hot, you might
begin with, ‘How long do you think this weather’s going to last?’ with a probable answer, ‘It
can’t go on much longer, surely?’
So you have now dealt with the weather. What next? It is perfectly usual in British culture to
ask about a person’s job and give details of yours, and then the conversation should flow
quite easily. However, people do not usually talk about salaries. Another possibility is a
question about where the person lives.
People often used to ask other people about family life, but they are a bit more careful now in
asking about relationships. If a British person asks you the question, you can reply, of course.
There is a general rule in British customs that you do not ask a stranger about politics or
religion. Most people do not have any problems with differences in political or religious
views. Friendship is quite possible between people with very different views, but with
strangers, it is the custom not to raise the subject.
