The eighth generation of Pokémon games, commonly referred to by fans as Generation VIII, is the latest installment of the Pokémon series. It started with the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield in November 2019, followed by expansions and later concluded with Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
Generation VIII was notable for not including every previously available Pokémon to obtain, as well as being the first generation to include paid DLC instead of an additional game. It was also released entirely on the Nintendo Switch home console system. The history of Generation VIII began with the announcement of Pokémon Sword and Shield in
February 2019, followed by the release of the games worldwide in November 2019. The Pokémon HOME application allowed players to store their Pokémon and trade with other players starting from February 2020. In January 2021, the presentation Pokémon Presents announced Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, remakes of Generation
IV games, and Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which was released in January 2022. Since May 2022, players can store their Pokémon from these new games and trade with other players using Pokémon HOME. Generation VIII introduced several gameplay advances, including the addition of 81 new Pokémon, 80 new moves, and 25 new Abilities. A new
region, Galar, based on the United Kingdom, was explored, along with a new open area called the Wild Area. The Y-Comm feature allowed trainers to battle and trade Pokémon locally or online using Nintendo Switch Online. Team Yell, a team with villainous intentions, is introduced along with two new devices: the Rotom Phone and the Rotom Bike,
which can grant speed boosts and move on water. Nineteen regional forms are added, including Pokémon from Generations II, III, and V, making it the first generation to have forms from multiple generations. The game also features refined animations for characters and Pokémon. Eight new Gyms are introduced, two of which have different type
specialties depending on the version, along with a Dark-type Gym and leader. A new battle mechanic called Dynamax is added, allowing Pokémon to increase in size and use Max Moves. Additionally, Gigantamax changes a Pokémon's form and turns moves into G-Max Moves. The game also includes downloadable content through the Sword and Shield
Expansion Pass, cosmetic marks and titles, save data bonuses, and more.
