Social media consumption of inaccurate material can result in misconceptions, the
dissemination of false information when shared, and the possibility of influencing opinions or
choices based on incorrect information. It may also be a factor in the erosion of confidence in
trustworthy organizations and sources. Furthermore, depending on the situation and the degree of
false information, acting on it can have real-world repercussions. Social media algorithms have
the ability to filter content so that it supports an individual's preexisting beliefs, reinforcing
extreme opinions. This may result in a lack of exposure to various viewpoints. Furthermore,
algorithms frequently promote captivating and addicting material to keep people scrolling, giving
engagement precedence over accuracy. This may promote the dissemination of false and
dangerous information. Giving openness top priority would be one approach to make this better.
Increasing user comprehension of the algorithms; alternatively, policies to prevent the
dissemination of false information and support diverse viewpoints worldwide should be put into
place.
Finally, there are several reasons why filter bubbles may be an issue. It limits our exposure to a
variety of perspectives by, first, reinforcing preexisting biases and assumptions. As a result of
people becoming more ingrained in their lifestyles, societal fragmentation may result. Second,
filter bubbles might provide the impression that everyone in a group agrees, giving the
impression that their point of view is the only valid one. Third, even though users are more likely
to come across and share content that supports their preexisting opinions, filter bubbles can aid in
the propagation of false information. Overall, filter bubbles can have detrimental effects on
democracy, and the ability to make informed decisions based on a thorough understanding of
issues. It's essential for individuals to actively seek out diverse perspectives and for platforms to
design algorithms that prioritize exposure to a variety of standpoints.
