ICT Grade 8 – First Lesson

1. What is ICT?

 ICT stands for Information and Communication Technology.


 It involves the use of technology to handle and communicate information.
 ICT includes all devices, systems, and applications that allow people to gather, process,
store, and communicate information.

2. Components of ICT ICT can be broken down into several key components:

 Hardware: Physical devices that make up a computer system, such as:


o Computers (Desktop, Laptop)
o Tablets and Smartphones
o Input Devices (keyboard, mouse)
o Output Devices (monitor, printer)
o Storage Devices (hard drive, flash drive)
 Software: Programs or applications that tell the hardware what to do, such as:
o Operating systems (Windows, macOS)
o Application software (Microsoft Word, Google Chrome)
o Utility software (Antivirus programs)
 Networks: Systems that allow computers to connect and communicate, such as:
o The Internet
o Local Area Networks (LAN)
o Wide Area Networks (WAN)

3. The Role of ICT in Everyday Life

 Communication: ICT enables communication through emails, social media, and


messaging apps.
 Education: Online classes, e-learning platforms, and digital textbooks are powered by
ICT.
 Business: Companies use ICT for data processing, online transactions, and
communication.
 Entertainment: Streaming services like Netflix, gaming, and social media rely on ICT.

4. Digital Citizenship

 Being responsible and respectful while using technology.


 Protecting your personal information.
 Understanding the importance of ethical behavior in digital spaces.
