What is communism
Communism is a socioeconomic and philosophical ideology that
advocates for a classless society in which all property and wealth
are communally owned instead of being owned by individuals.

History of communism
The word communism was derived from the Latin “communis”, meaning “shared” or
“common”—visions of a society that may be considered communist appeared as long ago as the 4th
century bc. In the ideal state described in Plato’s Republic, the governing class of guardians
devotes itself to serving the interests of the whole community. Because private ownership of goods
would corrupt their owners by encouraging selfishness, Plato argued, the guardians must live as a
large family that shares common ownership not only of material goods but also of spouses and
children.Modern communist ideology began to develop during the French Revolution and its seminal
tract, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels' "Communist Manifesto," was published in 1848.

History of modern communism
Modern communist ideology began to develop during the French Revolution and its seminal tract, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels' "Communist
Manifesto," was published in 1848. That pamphlet rejected the Christian tenor of previous communist philosophies, laying out a materialist and
scientific analysis of the history and future trajectory of human society. "The history of all hitherto existing society," Marx and Engels wrote, "is the
history of class struggles.’’
Marx and Engels' theories wouldn't be tested in the real world until after their deaths. An uprising in Russia toppled the czar and sparked a civil war in
1917 during World War I that eventually saw a group of radical Marxists led by Vladimir Lenin gain power in 1922. This group was called the Bolsheviks.
It founded the Soviet Union on former Imperial Russian territory and attempted to put communist theory into practice.
Lenin had developed the Marxist theory of vanguardism before the Bolshevik Revolution. This theory argued that a close-knit group of politically
enlightened elites was necessary to usher in the higher stages of economic and political evolution: socialism and finally communism.

History of modern communism
After the Russian Revolutions sparked by World War I, the Soviet government quickly withdrew from the European war and nationalized
private industry and agriculture. Under War Communism, it seized mines, factories, and estates, redistributing land to peasants. The
dispossessed landowners and aristocrats, supported by foreign capitalist nations like Britain and the U.S., launched the “White” counter
revolution against the “Red” government. The Russian Civil War concluded in 1920 with the Reds’ victory, but the Soviet Union was left
economically devastated. In response, Lenin introduced the New Economic Policy (NEP) in 1921, allowing private enterprise and
profit-making in small businesses, while the state retained control over large industries.
Lenin’s death in 1924 left Stalin, Trotsky, and Bukharin as key figures in the Communist Party. Before his passing, Lenin had cautioned the
party about Stalin’s ambitions—a warning that proved accurate. Stalin, increasingly ruthless, began consolidating power in the late 1920s
by undermining his rivals. By the mid-1930s, he launched purges against suspected dissidents, sending them to Siberia or executing
them. Trotsky, who had escaped abroad, was assassinated in Mexico in 1940 on Stalin’s orders. The remaining populace lived in fear of
Stalin’s secret police, the NKVD.

History of modern communism
By the 1970s and 1980s, the Soviet economy was in deep stagnation, plagued by inefficiency, low productivity, and a
lack of innovation. The centrally planned economy struggled to keep up with the technological advancements and
economic dynamism seen in the West, leading to shortages, declining living standards, and widespread
disillusionment among citizens. Politically, the authoritarian regime’s tight control over expression and its
heavy-handed censorship created frustration and resentment, especially as the ruling Communist Party became an
elite class, increasingly disconnected from the needs and aspirations of the people.
The era of Stalin was one of great corruption which was one of the main factors of the down call of communism, as
stalin's rule had nothing to do with communistic ideals
