1. Puppet Master:

○ The Puppet Master is the server where all configurations are stored and

Puppet Master interacts with the Puppet Agent (client) to manage configurations.

and sending configuration catalogs to the Puppet Agents.
2. Puppet Agent (Slave/Node):

Solaris, etc.).
○ Role: The Agent requests configuration from the Puppet Master, applies the
configurations, and sends reports back to the master.
3. Configuration Repository:

○ The Configuration Repository stores all configuration files related to the nodes
(client systems) and servers. It is where configurations are stored, retrieved, and
applied to the target systems when needed.
4. Facts:

○ Facts are key-value pairs that store system information about the node (e.g., OS
type, IP address, network interfaces, etc.).
○ These facts are used by the Puppet Master to determine the current state of the
node and make decisions about which configurations to apply.
5. Catalog:

○ A Catalog is the compiled configuration that is sent from the Puppet Master to
the Puppet Agent. It contains all the configuration details and is applied to the
target node.
○ Process: The agent sends facts to the master, requests a catalog, the master
compiles and sends back the catalog, and the agent applies it to the node. The
agent checks for discrepancies and fixes them.

Puppet Master-Slave Communication:

● SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is used to securely encrypt the communication between the
Puppet Master and the Puppet Agent.
● Process:
1. The Puppet Slave requests the Puppet Master’s certificate.
2. The Puppet Master sends its certificate to the Puppet Slave.
3. The Puppet Slave sends its certificate to the Puppet Master.
4. The Puppet Slave requests data from the Puppet Master.
5. The Puppet Master sends the required configuration data back to the Puppet
Slave.

Puppet Building Blocks:

1. Resources:

○ Resources are the basic building blocks in Puppet. They define the state of a
system and ensure that the desired configuration is applied. Examples include
files, packages, services, and users.

2. Classes:

○ Classes are groups of related resources combined together to form a unit. Classes

3. Manifests:

○ Manifests are directories that contain Puppet code written in Puppet DSL
(Domain Specific Language). These files have the .pp extension and define the
configuration for a node or class.
○ Example: A manifest file might define how to install and configure a web
application on a node.
4. Modules:

○ Modules are collections of related manifests, classes, and resources packaged


together. They are reusable units that can be shared and used across multiple
Puppet setups.
○ Example: A MySQL module to install and configure MySQL, or a Jenkins
module to manage Jenkins installation and setup.

not require any special agents or security infrastructure on the target systems.

Key Features and Components of Ansible:

1. Playbook:

○ Ansible uses playbooks to describe automation jobs. Playbooks are written in


YAML, a human-readable data serialization format, making it easy for IT staff to
read and write configurations.
○ Purpose: Playbooks contain tasks and instructions that Ansible executes on the
target systems.
2. Agentless Architecture:

○ Ansible is agentless, meaning it does not require any software agents on the
managed nodes.
○ It connects to the target systems via SSH (Secure Shell) by default, but it also
supports other methods like Kerberos for connection.
3. Ansible Modules:

○ When Ansible connects to a node, it pushes small programs called Ansible


Modules. These modules perform the tasks and are removed after execution.
○ Example: Installing software, managing services, etc.
4. Inventory File:

○ The inventory file is a simple text file that lists the IP addresses or hostnames of
the systems to be managed by Ansible.
○ It allows grouping of hosts (e.g., "web servers", "database servers") to run specific
tasks on them.

○ The Management Node is the control center where Ansible is installed. It

○ The Inventory file is used to identify the hosts and define which playbooks will
be executed on which system.
○ Ansible connects to each host via SSH, runs the tasks (modules), and removes the
modules after execution.
3. No Daemons or Servers:

○ Ansible operates without the need for any daemons or servers. It simply connects,
executes the tasks, and disconnects.

Ansible Terminology:

1. Ansible Server:

○ The machine where Ansible is installed and from which all tasks and playbooks
are executed.
2. Modules:
