SECTION A (40 MARKS)

Attempt all questions in this section

1. Chains have a variety of surveying applications from mapping out land boundaries to planning
construction projects. With the aid of a diagram name the parts of a chain. (4Marks)

2. Maintaining survey instruments ensures accuracy and safety in surveying operations. Outline
three ways of maintaining linear measuring instruments in surveying.
(3Marks)

3. The length of a line measured on a slope of 15° was recorded as 550m.But it was found that
the 20 m chain was 0.05m too long. Calculate the true horizontal distance of the
line.(5Marks)

4. Survey instruments are maintained to ensure accuracy in survey projects. Highlight four
ways of maintaining linear measuring instruments in surveying.
(4Mark)

5. Accuracy and precision are very crucial in linear measurements. Differentiate between the
two terms giving an example.
(5Marks)

6. Measuring chains are tools used for measuring longer distances and useful for large scale
projects. Discuss cases where chains are suitable.
(5Marks)

7. Errors in levelling can arise from a variety of sources. List out the various sources of errors in
levelling (4Marks)

8. Chain surveying is a traditional method of land surveying. State four types of chains used in
surveying

working angular measurements. Outline four care and maintenance of angular equipment
(4Marks)

SECTION B (60 MARKS)

11.

a) Tapes come in various types and each suited for various surveying applications. Briefly
explain any three types of tapes used in chain surveying. (6 Marks)

b) Chain is an important instrument used in linear measurements. Briefly explain any

three types of chains.
(6Marks)

c) Errors in angular measurements arise from various sources. State and explain any
four of these errors.
