Urban Greens: A Necessity

We (Bhoomi,Pushkar,Dev, Bhavik, Anusha),


studying in class
XII-E ‘commerce’ are deeply grateful to

completion of this project titled ‘Urban
Greens: A Necessity’ for the subject of english.
First and foremost, we express our gratitude to
God for the intellectual and creative abilities
that enabled us to complete this project.
Secondly, we acknowledge the vision and
leadership of our principal, Dr Rashmi Vij,
which inspired and motivated me to complete
this project. We also extend our gratitude to
our school, Police DAV Public School Jalandhar,
for providing the resources and a conducive
learning environment. Further, we would like
to thank our english teacher, Mrs. Preeti
Khehra, for her invaluable guidance,
encouragement, and support throughout the
project. Her insights and expertise have been
instrumental in shaping my understanding of

The purpose of this project is to
explore the fine line between
urbanization and ecological
sustainability by considering the
concept of preserving green spaces
during the process of urban sprawl.
This will research how cities and
neighborhoods within India have
effectively incorporated greener-
friendly approaches to ensuring
greenery while still incorporating the
demands of a burgeoning population
and infrastructure needs..
Urban green spaces are open space areas
reserved for parks and other "green spaces",
including plant life, water features – also
referred to as blue spaces– and other kinds of
natural environment. Most urban open
spaces are green spaces, but occasionally
include other kinds of open areas. The
landscape of urban open spaces can range
from playing fields, to highly maintained
environments, to relatively natural landscapes.
Generally considered open to the public, urban
green spaces are sometimes privately owned,
such as higher education
campuses, neighborhood/community
parks/gardens, and institutional or corporate
grounds.
 Loss of habitat: One of the most dangerous and
unsettling effects of deforestation is the loss of
animal and plant species due to their loss of
habitat. 70% of land animals and plant species live in
the forest.
 Increased greenhouse gases: The lack of trees also
allows a greater amount of greenhouse gases to be
released into the atmosphere. Healthy forests absorb
carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, acting as
valuable carbon sinks. Deforested areas lose that
ability and release more carbon.
 Soil erosion and flooding: Without forests, the soil
erodes and washes away, causing farmers to move on
and perpetuate the cycle. The barren land which is
left behind in the wake of these unsustainable
agricultural practices is then more susceptible
to flooding, specifically in coastal regions.

Engage in tree-planting initiatives in your
community or through global organizations.
 Support Responsible Companies
Choose to support companies that are
committed to reducing deforestation and
use sustainable practices.
 Buy Certified Wood Products
Opt for wood or paper products that are
certified by the Forest Stewardship Council
(FSC) or similar organizations.
 Buy and Use Responsibly
Consider your purchases carefully. Buy only
what you need, and prioritize items with
less packaging or reusable containers.
- A planned green city

Chandigarh, designed by Le Corbusier, is a


model of modern urban planning. It boasts
extensive green belts, gardens like the
Rose Garden and Rock Garden, and Sukhna
Lake for public recreation. The city’s
zoning ensures green areas are accessible
to residents, reducing urban heat and
promoting biodiversity.

The Lodhi Colony in New Delhi
integrates urban art with green
initiatives. Projects like rooftop
gardens and community-managed
green spaces have made this area a
hub of cultural and environmental
innovation.
- Biodiversity Parks
Hyderabad has established several
biodiversity parks, such as KBR
National Park and Botanical
Gardens, aimed at conserving local
flora and fauna while providing
residents with green recreational
areas
 Community Involvement: Programs
like Hyderabad’s biodiversity parks
involve local communities, NGOs,
and schools in their upkeep.
 Innovative Use of Space:
Chandigarh’s zoning and Delhi’s
rooftop gardens show how to
maximize urban green spaces.
 Sustainability Goals: Many of these
cities integrate rainwater
harvesting, waste recycling, and
renewable energy, emphasizing
sustainability.
Based on the survey results, it is
evident that the majority of
respondents (66.2%) belong to the 13-18
age group, suggesting that the survey
reflects the perspectives of a
predominantly younger demographic.
The next largest group is the 19-30 age
range, making up 18.2% of the
responses, while smaller proportions
are represented by the 31-50 (13%) and
51 and above age groups.
The survey results reveal that a
significant majority of respondents
(79.2%) are students, indicating that the
survey predominantly reflects the views
of individuals engaged in education. A
smaller proportion (15.6%) are working
professionals, while the remaining
respondents are homemakers. This
distribution suggests that the opinions
gathered are largely shaped by the
perspectives of students and working
professionals
Most people perceive the increase of
green spaces in urban areas as
important. This suggests a general
consensus on the value of green
spaces in cities.
A majority of respondents (79.2%) have access
to a park or green space in their
neighborhood, highlighting the availability of
recreational areas for most residents.
However, 18.2% of respondents reported that
there is no park or green space nearby, and
2.6% were uncertain. This suggests that while
most individuals benefit from nearby green
spaces, there are still areas that lack such
facilities.
The survey results indicate that a majority of
respondents (53.2%) believe there are efforts in
their area to preserve existing trees, suggesting
that tree preservation is a priority in many
locations. However, a significant portion (27.3%)
feel that no such efforts are being made, while
19.5% are uncertain, answering “maybe.” This
highlights a potential discrepancy in the
effectiveness or visibility of tree preservation
initiatives, with some areas potentially lacking
adequate action or awareness.
The results show that a significant majority of
respondents (84.4%) either grow plants or
maintain a garden at their school or in their
personal spaces, indicating a strong interest in
gardening and plant care. Additionally, 10.4% are
unsure, suggesting that there may be potential
for more awareness or involvement in gardening
initiatives. However, a small percentage (5.2%)
reported that they do not engage in any
gardening activities.
The survey reveals that a significant portion of
the school community (70.1%) is actively
involved in environmental campaigns,
indicating strong participation in sustainability
efforts. However, 10.4% of respondents feel
that there is no involvement, and 19.5% remain
uncertain, suggesting some inconsistency in the
visibility or reach of such initiatives. These
results emphasize the importance of further
promoting environmental campaigns to
increase awareness and ensure more
widespread participation among both students
and staff.
The survey results demonstrate overwhelming
support for a law mandating every household to
plant at least one tree, with 90.9% of
respondents in favor. A smaller portion (7.8%)
expressed uncertainty, while a minimal
percentage opposed the idea. This strong
positive response suggests that there is
widespread public support for initiatives aimed
at environmental conservation and tree
planting, highlighting a collective desire to
contribute to sustainability efforts.
In conclusion, the results of this project
highlight a strong awareness and support
for environmental conservation among the
respondents. A majority of people believe
in the importance of green spaces, tree
preservation, and sustainable practices like
planting trees in households. The survey
reveals that many communities already
have access to parks and green spaces, and
that students and staff are actively
participating in environmental campaigns.
However, the responses also show that
there are areas where environmental
efforts could be further improved. Some
respondents felt that more action is
needed to preserve trees and enhance
green spaces, and a few were unsure about
the effectiveness of certain environmental
initiatives. Overall, the findings suggest
that while there is a strong base of support
for environmental actions, greater
awareness and involvement in these
initiatives could be beneficial in
encouraging even more people to take part
in protecting the environment.
