1 Bon has given the following answers for his homework. Are his answers correct, incorrect or
incomplete? Correct or explain the mistakes. The first question has been done for you.

a There are 2347 students in a secondary school. 1492 are girls.


Is there a higher percentage of girl or boy students? Justify your answer.

There is a higher percentage of girl students.

Incomplete. Bon has answered the question but he has not justified it.

b Explain the meaning of percentage increase.

It is when there is an increase from a lower percentage value to a higher one,


e.g. from 40% to 50%.

c Give an example of a percentage decrease.

There were 10 boys in Justin’s high school class in the first year. This fell to 5 boys
in the second year. There was a 50% decrease from the first to the second year.

d Circle the number which is the multiplier in the following calculation.

165% of $275 = 1.65 × $275 = $453.75

e The original cost of a coat was $64. In a sale this is reduced by 25%.
What is the absolute change in the price?

25% decrease = 0.75 x $64 = $48
