The article tells the story of how American poet Edgar Allan Poe became one
of the most praised author in modern pop culture. It starts with a short introduction to
the silhouette of Poe. His unique image is widely recognizable. The man’s face can
be seen on clothing, appliances, and even memes. But it wasn’t always like that for
Poe. People of his time didn’t appreciate his work and treated him like an outsider.
His reputation sadly didn’t change until his death. Rufus W. Griswold, a mysterious
figure claiming to be Poe’s friend, wrote an unflattering obituary that contributed to
the conviction of Edgar being an underdog. Griswold extended the obituary note into
a biographical essay with a collection of Poe’s works and surprisingly made a fortune
that Edgar never would. That’s when people were getting to know who Edgar Allan
Poe was. His poems and prose were finally appreciated. People started to see him
as a tragic hero and his miserable life as an inspiration. At the beginning of the 20th
century, many movies about him appeared. That fame lasts til today. New movies
and tv series that evolve around the legend of Edgar Allan Poe always struck as
success. Series such as „The Pale Blue Eyes” or „Wednesday” prove that his legacy
is alive and his literary works loved.
