Lecture Notes
Values education as a part of the school curriculum is the process by which
values, attitudes and habits are formed as the learner interacts with his
environment under the guidance of the teacher. It involves different kinds of
teaching-learning process. First, in terms of subject matter, values has direct
and immediate relevance to the personal life of the learner. Second, the process
involves not just cognitive but all the faculties of the learner. The teacher must
appeal to the heart and the total human person instead of only to the mind. And
third, one learns values the way children learn many things from their parents.
Children identify with parents, and this identification becomes the vehicle for the
transmission of learning. Hence, the teacher’s personal values play an important
role in values learning.
In the MATATAG K to 10 Curriculum of the K to 12 Program Values
Education (VE) o Edukasyon sa Pagpapahalaga was defined as “tumutukoy sa
asignatura (Section 4, RA 11476).

The importance of values education in today's society
We want to create a more sustainable world, with stable economies and
more just and inclusive societies. A difficult but not unattainable target if we can
count on the involvement of governments, institutions, businesses, and, above
all, a responsible and committed public.
An exemplary citizen is made, not born. Just as we learn mathematics and
languages, we should also become specialists in those lessons that are
fundamental to living in harmony and social progress such as respect, empathy,
equality, solidarity and critical thinking. Without these and other ethical
principles that define us as human beings, it will be difficult for us to build a
better world.
The aims of values education
This concept is about the educational process that instills moral
standards to create more civil and democratic societies. Values education
therefore promotes tolerance and understanding above and beyond our political,
cultural and religious differences, putting special emphasis on the defense of
human rights, the protection of ethnic minorities and the most vulnerable
groups, and the conservation of the environment.
Values education is the responsibility of us all and not just of schools. The family,
universities, businesses and sport, for example, are all ideal contexts to teach
those ethical principles. Even so, for many years now, countries like Australia
and the UK have been contemplating including values education as part of
compulsory education.
Conclusion:
A comprehensive approach to education, the MATATAG Curriculum gave
values education a big transformation it will improve students’ behavior and
academic achievement. Techniques to deal with these issues include the Whole
School Approach and ongoing professional development for educators. The

curriculum's emphasis on integrating values promotes the development of
character and critical life skills in addition to academic performance. Initiatives
for values education must continue to be evaluated and improved to be
successful in the long run. The MATATAG Curriculum represents a major
advancement in educating students to become responsible adults with the
knowledge and abilities needed to succeed in the 21st century.
Values education helps instill a shared sense of purpose, identity, and
collective responsibility. Its absence can result in societal fragmentation,
mistrust, and the inability to come together to address shared challenges. The
absence of values education can undermine a country's moral fabric, social
unity, civic engagement, and overall development, ultimately jeopardizing its
long-term prosperity and stability.
