1. Read the following text to answer the question.
The Good Stepmother
The old witch locked Hansel in a cage and set Gretel to clean the house. She planned to
eat them both. Each night the children cried and begged the witch to let them go. Meanwhile,
at home, their stepmother was beginning to wish she had never tried to get rid of the
children. “I must find them,” she said and set off into the forest.
Many hours later, when her feet were tired from walking, and her lips were dry from
thirst, she came to the cottage belonging to the witch. The stepmother peeped through the
window. Her heart cried out when she saw the two children. She picked up the broom
leaning against the door and crept inside. The witch put some stew in the oven when the
stepmother gave her an almighty push. The witch fell into the oven, and the stepmother shut
the door.
“Children, I have come to save you,” she said, hugging them tightly.
“I have done a dreadful thing. I hope in time you will forgive me. Let me take you home
and become a family again.”
They returned to their home, and the stepmother became the best mother anyone could
wish to have, and of course, they lived happily ever after!
What is the story about?
A. A witch who was really kind
B. A father who begged a witch for money
C. A stepmother saving children from a witch
D. Two children went to the forest for the first time
E. Two children saving their stepmother from a witch

5. Read the following text to answer the question.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the most important United States export
product was cotton, favored by the European textile industry over flax or wool because it was
easy to process and soft to the touch. During the period, the mechanization of spinning and
weaving allowed significant centralization and expansion in the textile industry. At the same
time, the demand for cotton increased dramatically. American producers were able to meet
this demand largely because of the tile invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney in 1793.
Cotton could be grown throughout the South, but separating the fiber--or lint--from the
seed was laborious. Sea Island cotton was relatively easy to process by hand because its
fibers were long, and seeds were concentrated at the base of the flower. Still, it demanded a
long growing season, available only along the nation's eastern seacoast. Short-staple cotton
required a much shorter growing season, but the shortness of the fibers and their mixture
with seeds meant that a worker could hand-process only about one pound per day.
Whitney's gin was a hand-powered machine with revolving drums and metal teeth to pull
cotton fibers away from seeds. Using the gin, a worker could produce up to '50 pounds of lint
a day. The later development of larger gins powered by horses, water, or steam, multiplied
productivity further.
The interaction of improved processing and high demand led to the rapid spread of
cotton cultivation and a surge in production. It became the primary American export,
dwarfing all others. In 1802, cotton composed 14 percent of total American exports by value.
Cotton had a 36 percent share by 1810 and over a 50 percent share in 1830. In 1860, 61
percent of the value of American exports was represented by cotton of the value of American
exports in that year. Cotton was king in the trade of the young republic. The growing market
for cotton and other American agricultural products led to an unprecedented expansion of
agricultural settlement, mostly in the eastern half of the United States - west of the
Appalachian Mountains and east of the Mississippi River.
What happened in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries?
A. The European textile industry increased its demand
B. Cotton became the most important American export product
C. Cotton became the most important European export product
D. Mechanization of spinning and weaving changed the textile industry
E. Cotton became a profitable crop but was still time-consuming to process

11. Read the following text to answer the question.
Recycling is the process of collecting, processing, and reusing materials that would
otherwise be thrown away. Materials ranging from precious metals to broken glass, from old
newspapers to plastic spoons, can be recycled. The recycling process reclaims the original
material and uses it in new products.
Using recycled materials to make new products costs less and requires less energy than
using new materials. Recycling can also reduce pollution by reducing the demand for high-
pollution alternatives or minimizing the amount of pollution produced during the
manufacturing process.
Paper products that can be recycled include cardboard containers, wrapping paper, and
office paper. The most commonly recycled paper product is newsprint. Old newspapers are
collected and searched for contaminants such as plastic bags and aluminum foil in
newspaper recycling. The paper went to a processing plant mixed with hot water and turned
into pulp in a machine that works much like a big kitchen blender. The pulp is screened and
filtered to remove smaller contaminants. The pulp then goes to a large vat where the ink
separates from the paper fibers and floats to the surface. The ink is skimmed off, dried, and
reused as ink or burned as boiler fuel. The cleaned pulp is mixed with new wood fibers to be
made into paper again.
Experts estimate the average office worker generates about 5 kg of waste paper per
month. Every ton of recycled paper saves about 1.4 cu m (about 50 cu ft) of landfill space.
One ton of recycled paper saves 17 pulpwood trees (trees used to produce paper).
How can recycling reduce pollution?
A. It is screened and filtered to remove contaminant
B. It minimizes pollution in the manufacturing process
C. It reuses the material that otherwise is thrown away
D. It makes a new product that us cheaper and practical
E. It can recycle paper products into a cardboard container

All human beings eat food and use chemical energy, so do all other animals. Perhaps
you wonder where all that chemical energy comes from. Why doesn't the food all get
used up? The answer is that new food is being grown as fast as old food is used to.
It is the green plants that form new food. Animals either eat the plants or eat other
animals that have eaten plants. The green substance of plants is chlorophyll. Chlorophyll
can absorb sunlight. When it does so, it changes the sun's energy into chemical energy.
The chemical energy present in sunlight chlorophyll combines dioxide in the air with water
from the soil. Starch and other complicated compounds are formed. These are high in
chemical energy obtained from the sunlit chlorophyll. They make up the food on which
humankind and all other animals live.
In the process of forming this food, some oxygen atoms are leftover. These are given
off into the air by the plants. The whole process is called photosynthesis. Thus, plants use
sunlight from food and oxygen to carbon dioxide and water again. Plants change the
sun's energy into chemical energy. And animals change the animal energy into kinetic
and heat energy.
What will happen when the chlorophyll absorbs the sunlight?
A. It will make use of heat energy
B. It will form complicated compound
C. It will change the heat into kinetic energy
D. It will change kinetic energy into chemical energy
E. It will change the sun’s energy into chemical energy

The Danger of Sugar
Sugar is sweet, but it can negatively affect our body. How sugar actually affects heart
health is not completely understood, but it appears to have several indirect connections.
What is the danger of sugar?
Obesity rates are rising worldwide, and evidence suggests that added sugar, often from
sugar-sweetened beverages, is a major contributor to obesity. Sugar-sweetened drinks like
sodas, juices, and sweet teas are loaded with fructose, a type of simple sugar. Consuming
fructose increases your hunger and desire for food more than glucose, the main type of
sugar found in starchy foods.
Also, drinking a lot of sugar-sweetened beverages is linked to an increased amount of
visceral fat, a kind of deep belly fat associated with conditions like diabetes and heart
disease. High-sugar diets have been associated with an increased risk of many diseases,
including heart disease, the number one cause of death worldwide. Evidence suggests that
high-sugar diets can lead to obesity and inflammation as well as high triglycerides, blood
sugar, and blood pressure levels, all of which are risk factors for heart disease. Additionally,
consuming too much sugar, especially from sugar-sweetened drinks, has been linked to
atherosclerosis, a disease characterized by fatty, artery-clogging deposits.
A study of over 25,877 adults found that individuals who consumed more added sugar
had a greater risk of developing heart disease and coronary complications compared to
individuals who consumed less added sugar. Your body needs some sugar for energy, but
the rest is stored as fat. Not shockingly, sugar's relationship to weight gain affects your
health. So, you have to consume sugar moderately, not too much.
How can sugar harm our health?
A. It reduces body resistance
B. It increases the risk of infertility
C. It makes us want to eat more
D. It triggers onset of muscle spasms
E. It mixes glucose with fat in our body

More than one-third of international students graduating from Australian universities,
mainly Asians, have such poor English skills they should never have been admitted.
Research by demographer Bob Birrell found that more than 50 percent of South Korean and
Thai students did not have sufficient English to work professionally in Australia, along with
more than 43 percent of Chinese graduates. Some 17 percent of students from Singapore
and India, where English is more widely spoken, also failed to reach the required level.
Overall, 34 percent of the graduating international students offered permanent residence
visas in 2006 did not have competent English.
Birrell of Melbourne's Monash University said almost all the 12.000 graduates tested for
the survey were from Asia because they are most likely to apply for permanent residency
after completing their studies. However, he said he believed the study to represent all
international students, partly because Asia was a significant source of fee-paying overseas
students for Australian universities. "It does raise questions about university standards,"
Birrell told AFP. Tertiary institutions rely on international students because they provide 15
percent of funding, suggesting that academic standards are sacrificed in favor of financial
rewards.Education Minister Julie Bishop described the survey as "an extraordinary attack by
Professor Birrell on our fig universities."
International students must meet international language benchmarks to get a place in
Australia," she said. The study found all graduates tested had enough command of the
language to cope in most situations. However, people who have reached this standard are
still not capable of conducting sophisticated discourse at the professional level.
In his report, Birrell said there was a "mountain of anecdotal material" that many
overseas students struggle 20 to meet their course requirements and those universities cope
by lowering the English demands of the courses. 'There is widening recognition of the
English problem,' he said. 'But universities were hesitant to make students take extra
language courses because this would make them more expensive and therefore less
attractive than rival institutions,' he said. However, Professor Gerard Sutton, the president of
the Australian Vice-Chancellors Committee, said most international students would be
proficient in reading, writing, and listening to English. I think a deficiency in spoken language
has been highlighted, he told AFP, adding that a lack in this area would not prevent them
from completing a university course.
What can we infer about the respondents?
A. They were students entering Australian universities from Asia
B. They were all foreign students graduating from Australian universities
C. They were Australian and foreign graduates of all Australian universities
D. They were foreign students at graduate programs in Australian universities
E. They were mostly Asian students who graduated from Australian universities
