STRETCHING ROUTINE
FOR MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY
STRETCHING IS A TECHNIQUE WHERE THE MUSCLE IS ELONGATED MANUALLY UNTIL A
RANGE COMFORTABLE TO THE CHILD. IT HAS TO BE DONE IN A GENTLE MANNER. IT IS
USEFUL TO MAINTAIN A GOOD MUSCLE HEALTH LIKE IMPROVE BLOOD CIRCULATION,
MAINTAIN MUSCLE LENGTH AND IMPROVE FLEXIBILITY. STRETCHING, WHEN DONE
OPTIMALLY IS EXTREMELY USEFUL IN MANAGING DYSTROPHY.
ANKLE JOINT STRETCHES
WEEK 1
Position: Lie on the back
WEEK 1
Hold: One hand cupping the heal and other
just above knee joint
Procedure: Move the ankle in the direction
towards the head of the child
10 count hold for 10 repetition
KNEE JOINT STRETCHES
Position: Lie on the back
Hold: One hand at the ankle and the other on
the thigh
Procedure: Bend the knee above 90
degrees, Lift the ankle in upward direction
towards ceiling
10 count hold for 10 repetition
HIP JOINT STRETCHES
Position: Lie on one side
Hold: One hand at the knee and the other on
top of hip
Procedure: Take the leg backwards and
slowly push it downward towards floor
10 count hold for 10 repetition
ELBOW STRETCHES
ELBOW STRETCHES
Position: Sitting with arm rested on pillow
WEEK 1 Hold: One hand on the back of arm just above
elbow and other on wrist
Procedure: Straighten the elbow completely
until elbow is fully straight
10 count hold for 10 repetition
FOREARM STRETCHES
Position: Sitting with arm rested on pillow
Hold: One hand like you are shaking and the
other at the elbow
Procedure: Keeping the elbow stable, rotate
the forearm outwards
10 count hold for 10 repetition
WRIST AND FINGER STRETCHES
Position: Sitting with arm rested on pillow
Hold: One hand on the back of forearm and
other on the palm/ fingers.
Procedure: Extend your wrist/ fingers gently
10 count hold for 10 repetition
