Surtido is a traditional dance that originated in the Philippines, often performed in
rural communities. The dance is a lively and festive performance that showcases a mix
of steps from various folk dances. The term "surtido" itself means "assortment" or
"variety," which reflects the diverse nature of the dance movements.

The dance is typically performed in a square formation, similar to a quadrille, and

features various patterns, such as promenades, dos-a-dos, and chain steps. Surtido is
often danced during fiestas or special celebrations, reflecting the community's joy and
unity.

In terms of literature, surtido is sometimes referred to in Filipino folktales and songs,

particularly those that capture rural life and community gatherings. Its lively nature
and emphasis on togetherness reflect the values of Filipino culture, including
hospitality, joy, and cooperation.

Some important aspects of the dance include:

1. Costumes:
• Traditional Filipino attire, such as baro’t saya for women and barong
tagalog for men.
2. Music:
• The music accompanying the dance is typically light, upbeat, and played
using traditional Filipino instruments like the bandurria, guitar, and
rondalla.
3. Choreography:
• The steps involve couples or groups performing coordinated movements,
often reflecting everyday tasks or communal activities.
