Chapter 1. Who am I?
1.1 Gaps-similarities analysis

Strengths

My (core) qualities

My life is closely associated with the proverb “One good turn deserves another”. Therefore, I
consider myself an empathetic and caring person. I am always ready to help my friends, family,
and even strangers when they are in adverse circumstances. Listening to people’s stories,
offering comfort, and supporting them are the ways to express my care. Thanks to care and
empathy, it is easier for me to understand people which leads to strengthening the bond with
people and building strong and respectful relationships. Based on interviews with my relatives,
some opinions agree that I am a caring and sympathetic person. Besides, there are also
opinions that I am an independent and flexible person because they believe that I can respond
quickly and easily to new environments.
Soft skills – strengths

I take pride that my leadership and organizational skills are my strong soft skills. Firstly,
leadership skills can help me to enhance my ability to effectively collaborate with my classmates
on group projects. In addition, I can guide my peers to stay organized and focused which leads
to improving my project outcome. Secondly, organizational skills help me to minimize
distractions, streamline the workflow, and optimize my study and daily life which leads to boost
my study productivity. Besides, people around me believe that adaptability and stress
management are my soft skills because I can easily integrate into a new society like the
Netherlands, thereby balancing my life more effectively and avoiding depression.

My greatest accomplishments

For me, the greatest achievement I have achieved is having the opportunity to study abroad in
the Netherlands, it shows my tireless efforts in studying. Thanks to studying abroad, I can
expand my horizontal knowledge and learn more about the unique culture in the Netherlands.
Besides, becoming the head of the badminton branch of my sports club stands as one of my
proudest achievements. To be a head of badminton, this position not only requires badminton
skills but also key soft skills such as solving problem skills, time management, and
organizational skills.

Weaknesses

My challenges

my challenges could be objective and self-determination. firstly, the objective is my challenge

because I can be too concerned with other people's thoughts and needs, sometimes I need to
step back and look at the problem more objectively and fairly. Therefore, I need to balance my
emotions and reason so as not to become biased. Secondly, self-determination is my challenge
because self-determination helps me to be proactive and self-determined in making decisions
independently. It encourages me to help others without losing sight of my own vision and
priorities. While some people think that my challenge is collaboration and consistency. Firstly,
because they believe that I am an independent person, I will struggle to delegate tasks and
collaborate effectively with everyone. Secondly, consistency is my challenge because it can be
difficult for me to maintain consistent routines and pursue long-term goals because of my
flexible personality.

Soft skills – weaknesses

There is one of the weak soft skills I have been developing which is decision-making. Until now,
I am still difficult to make my decision and confuse whether or not I am on the right path. In
addition, my friends think that communication is my weakness because I am not confident in
presenting my ideas in front of a crowd, and I am shy and nervous when doing presentations in
class.

Factors that Contributed to Failure

One of the significant factors that contributed to my failure was over-estimate my ability. A clear
example of this was my IELTS English test. Initially, I was confident about my English ability
which led to under-preparation. When I decided to take the exam, I wasn’t adequately prepared
and my overestimating my ability resulted in me failing to achieve my target score. This failure
was a tough lesson and made me realize Confidence is important but It is also crucial to stay
grounded and recognize aspects that need improvement.

The most important two values

Balance is one of the most important values guiding my life. I believe that balance between work
and personal life, dedication, and rest is the key to long-term success and happiness. The major
reason for that is balance not only can help me avoid burnout, stress, and depression but also
boost my efficiency and effectiveness in my academic pathway and daily life. In fact, balance is
the supplemented factor to my learning and I believe that learning is my second value. Learning
is the key to helping me to open a new door in my life which is studying abroad. Putting the forth
effort to learn brought me a lot of benefits such as exposure, experience, and study in the new
country. In addition, this expanded my horizontal knowledge which led to my developing myself.

1.2 Two soft skills that have helped me to adapt to this

unfamiliar environment

1. Organizational skills because when I come to a new country and a new study environment, I
have to resystematized my reschedule to be suitable with the local timeline. To be more
specific, most Vietnamese have a habit of taking a nap in the afternoon to recharge energy.
However, this habit is not popular in the Netherlands. Thanks to organizational skills, I can
control my timeline and adapt easily to the study environment in the Netherlands

2. Time management because this ability helps me to solve a lot of deadlines in block 1,
especially the projects for power glass. Managing time systematically not only helps me study
effectively but also makes my life easier from doing household chores to relaxing with my
friends.

I seem to have a Pragmatist learning type with secondary preferences for reflectors and
activists. This demonstrates I value practical knowledge, learn by reflecting and observing, and
enjoy hands-on learning. While I may also be interested in theoretical concepts, my primary
focus is on applying learning to real-world situations.

goals.

Appendix 8: Summary of individual PPD coach meeting

On October 10, I had a PPD coach meeting with Mr. Klass. To be honest, that day was the first
day I met him because my calendar did not show PPD class. Therefore, he not only asked
about my daily life, but he also spent a lot of time guiding me in study. He cared and asked me a
lot, asking if I was adapting well to the new environment, how my accommodation was, how my
classmates were, and if I could integrate into the class. In fact, I was able to integrate into the
new life and did not suffer from culture shock. In addition, he was very enthusiastic in guiding
me on how to make a portfolio and showed me how to set goals effectively and correctly.
Moreover, he spent a lot of time giving solutions to help me become more confident. For
example, I should actively raise my hand to speak in class, volunteer to do presentations in
project groups, and make as many friends as possible. To be honest, his advice was very
effective for me, and I was very grateful and happy to have a meeting with him.
