Biofuel, is it renewable?
Biofuel, is it renewable?
Biofuels a renewable source of energy, which can be
sustained indefinitely. There are three types, bioethanol,
biodiesel and biogas.
A biofuel is defined as a "liquid, solid, or gaseous fuel
produced by conversion of biomass, such as biogas from
anaerobic waste decomposition, bioethanol from sugar
cane or corn, and charcoal or wood chips."
Due to which, one of the problems with solar, wind, and
other alternative energy sources can be resolved by
using biofuels.
02
Advantages
Merits of Biofuel
- Environmentally Sustainable (renewable)
- Promotes Agriculture (because the energy is used from plants)
- Should be Carbon Neutral (returns the CO2 back to the atmosphere)
- Reduces Air Pollution (produces fewer pollutants when burned)
- Job Creations (create employment opportunities)
- Diverse Energy source (provides an alternative to petroleum based fuels)
- Supports Rural Communities (increases need for agriculture)
03
Disadvantages
Drawback of Biofuel
- Land Use Competition (food prices increases)
- Disturbs the Ecosystem (habitat destruction, loss of biodiversity)
- Water Usage (needs significant amount of water for irrigation)
- Food Security (Use of food crop for fuel production can arouse ethical concerns
especially if there is food or water scarcity)
- Hazards in Handling (fire and explosion hazard)
- Costly (to harvist, extract, the production process and the agricultural process)

How it is used to
generate electricity
How is biofuel used to generate
electricity
1. High-pressure steam is created in a boiler by burning biomass.
2. The turbine blades rotate as a result of the steam flowing over them.
3. The rotation of the turbine drives the generator, producing electricity.
In an existing power plant furnace, biomass can also be used to replace a portion of the coal
using a technique known as co-firing, which involves simultaneously burning two distinct
kinds of materials.
In India, the fuel requirement they use 2% of biofuels and the rest 98% is made from fossil
fuels.
