1. PEDAGOGICAL
CONCEPTS

Pedagogy often confused with curriculum. Curriculum
determines what is taught, while pedagogy actually
refers to methods of how we teach- theory and practice

learning techniques and culture, and determined based
on the educator’s beliefs about how learning should be,
and it does happen.
Pedagogy requires interaction and meaningful
classroom honors between educators and students. The
aim is to help students build on prior learning and
develop skills and attitudes and for educators to plan
and present the curriculum in a way that is relevant to
students, appropriate to their needs and culture.
Shaped by the teacher's own experience, pedagogy
must consider the context in which learning takes place,
and with whom. This is not about the materials used, but
process, and strategy which is used to achieve

In a literal sense, the word pedagogy comes from a


Greek word that effectively means "the art of teaching
children." More specifically, agogos means leader in
Greek, and pedagogue referring to the teacher.
Paidagogos is a servant tasked with bringing boys to
school and back, educating them manners as well as

According to Merriam-Webster, pedagogy is
the “Art, science, or profession of teaching;
especially: education. ”

This definition covers many aspects of


teaching, but pedagogy really comes down to
studying teaching methods.

There are many moving parts to pedagogy


that include teaching styles, feedback, and
assessment.

including the aims of education and the ways
in which such goals may be achieved.

The field relies heavily on educational


psychology, which encompasses scientific
theories of learning, and to some extent on
the philosophy of education, which considers
the aims and value of education from a
philosophical perspective.
PEDAGOGICAL MODEL
The Pedagogical Model describes what effective teachers do in their
classrooms to engage students in intellectually challenging work. It provides an
overview of the learning cycle and breaks it down into five domains or phases
of instruction:
(1) Engage, (2) Explore, (3) Explain, (4) Elaborate and (5) Evaluate.

The Pedagogical Model domains are elements of one complete


model of teaching rather than separate, self-contained
components. In some lessons, students will move through all
five domains. In other lessons, teachers will naturally switch
between domains in response to student needs and learning
program requirements. The Pedagogical Model respects this
kind of flexibility – it is not designed as a template for linear or
prescriptive lesson plans.

gathering relevant information and developing
ideas. They help students expand their
perspectives and preconceptions, understand
learning tasks and prepare to navigate their own
learning.

EXPLAIN
Teachers explicitly teach relevant knowledge,
concepts and skills in multiple ways to connect
new and existing knowledge. They monitor
student progress in learning and provide
structured opportunities for practising new skills
and developing agency.
ELABORATE

ELABORATE
Teachers challenge students to move from
surface to deep learning, building student ability
to transfer and generalise their learning. They
support students to be reflective, questioning
and self-monitoring learners.
EVALUATE

EVALUATE
Teachers use multiple forms of assessment and
feedback to help students improve their learning
and develop agency. They monitor student
progress and analyse data to draw conclusions
about the effectiveness of their teaching
practices, identify areas for improvement and
address student individual needs.
