Introduction
Background of the Study
In the field of nursing, understanding the foundational theories of nursing is crucial for us
student nurses. Mastering these basic concepts helps us analyze and apply various theories within
the field, enhancing our ability to provide effective patient care. This knowledge is essential for
developing critical thinking skills and a deeper comprehension of nursing practice.
According to Wayne (2024) nursing theory serves as a structured body of knowledge that
articulates what nursing is, what nurses do, and why these actions are essential; it also correlates with
Jove (2024) which states that this foundation not only distinguishes nursing from other healthcare
professions but also guides clinical practice and decision-making. Central to nursing theory are four
metaparadigms; person, environment, health, and nursing (Nursing Bird, 2024). These concepts
interrelate to provide a comprehensive view of nursing practice: the person refers to individuals,
families, or communities receiving care; the environment encompasses all external factors affecting
health, including social and physical surrounding health represents a state of well-being that varies for
each individual; and nursing involves the actions and responsibilities of nurses in providing care.
Various nursing theories offer structured approaches to understanding patient care needs and
guiding nursing interventions. These frameworks help nurses assess situation, plan care, and
evaluate outcomes effectively (Arif, 2020). The evolution of nursing theory can be traced back to
pioneers like Florence Nightingale, who emphasized the importance of education in nursing. Over
time, nursing has transitioned from a practice based on intuition to one grounded in scientific theory.
Mastering the theoretical foundations of nursing is essential for developing competent
practitioners who can deliver high-quality care. Theories provide a rationale for nursing actions,
enhancing critical thinking and clinical judgment while helping nurses understand their roles and
responsibilities within healthcare settings. Furthermore, a solid theoretical foundation fosters a sense
of identity among nurses, enabling them to articulate their unique contributions to patient care.
Ultimately, nursing theories support the development of evidence-based practices by offering
frameworks and clinical guidelines. By integrating theory into practice, nurses can enhance their
professional skills and improve patient outcomes.
