Carving the Perfect Pumpkin– Order & Sequence
Read the text in the boxes in the margins, and place them in the correct order.
Your 6-digit code will be the first letter of each box in order.

It’s the time of year to carve pumpkins, and you want to make sure you have the best strategies in
place so you can win all the pumpkin carving competitions you enter.

When carving the perfect pumpkin, there are multiple steps you should take to assure it turns out just
how you’d like it. Step one is to choose the perfect pumpkin from the pumpkin patch. You want it to be be
on that is an appropriate size, blemish free, and the right size and shape you like most.

There are certain tools you will need in order to carve the perfect pumpkin. Of course, you’ll need your
pumpkin. Next, you’ll need a knife, spoon, and a marker or design to create an outline. Start by cutting
large hole in the bottom of the pumpkin. Most often you will find that people cut a hole in the top. By
cutting a hole in the bottom, the pumpkin will not fall in on itself and will hold it’s shape longer.

After you have cut a large enough hole, you can begin to remove the seeds and gunk inside of the
pumpkin. Using the spoon, you can scrape any bits and remaining pieces from the walls of the pumpkin.
Ensuring that the insides of the pumpkin are clean will give a better presentation.

Now you can use the marker to outline your design. Using a stencil or drawing by freehand will let you
alter the design as you go. By drawing your design before you cut, you are less like to make a mistake that
could ruin your final product.

You are now ready to carve your pumpkin! Use a fine tooth saw or small knife to cut around your
design. The small knife will give you more precision when carving the pumpkin. After finishing your cuts,
clean up around the edges to give a better presentation. Make sure you are careful when using these
tools. You are now ready to display your pumpkin! Add a candle light to the base to back light your design
for added effect. © The Sparkly Notebook
