Read a text about Freya Stark. Circle the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the best answer to
each of the questions.
Freya Stark lived during the time when people considered explorers as heroes. She
travelled to some remote places in the Middle East. Not many Europeans, especially
women, had travelled there before. Also, she travelled a lot in Turkey, Italy, Nepal and
Afghanistan.
She had no formal education as a child, but she moved around with her parents and learnt
French, German and Italian. In 1912, she entered London University. When World War I
started, she joined a nurse group and worked in Italy. After the war, she returned to
London and went to the school of Oriental Studies. Her studies there became useful
during her journeys in the Middle East. These trips enabled her to finally become fluent
in Persian, Russian and Turkish. At the age of thirty-three, she travelled to Lebanon in
1927. When she saved enough money, she started learning Arabic. In 1928, she travelled
by donkey to Jebel Druze. During another trip, she went to a remote area of the Elburz,
where she made a map. She was searching for information about an ancient Muslim
group known as the Assassins, which she wrote about in The Valley of the Assassins
(1934). This book helped her win the Gold Medal from the Royal Geographic Society.
Twelve years later, she continued her travelling and writing career, creating a style
combining the description of her journeys with her discussion of the people, places,
customs, history and politics in the Middle East.
