Annual Report AY - 2019-2020

Government College of Engineering, Salem-11, was founded in 1966 as a part


of 3rd Five year plan by the Government of Tamilnadu. The Institute, a temple of
excellence in Technical Education, was the third Government Engineering College to
be started. It is located on a 162 hectares site surrounded by greenish natural
environment. The first batch of students were admitted for the academic year 1966-
1967. Since then, the institution has been consistently upgrading itself for the
growing needs of the technical education. The institution currently offers 6 Under
Graduate and 6 Post Graduate programmes. All the Departments have been granted
recognition for guiding research work, leading to Ph.D. under the Anna University,
Chennai. Our Institution is the QIP centre, recognized by AICTE for doing research
leading to Ph.D. in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Electronics Engineering
branches.

The institution has a vision to mould the students not only as an excellent
Engineers in the field of Science and Technology, but also as a good citizen of our
country. The commitment of the institution is to produce comprehensive knowledge
seekers and humane individuals, capable of building a strong and developed nation.
The institution also has its mission to impart updated technical education and
knowledge to the budding engineers.

Government College of Engineering, Salem, is an Autonomous institution,


approved by AICTE and UGC. It is also affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. The
institution has a well-defined organization structure and a board of governors for its
effective functioning. The Board of Governors functions with the support of the
Chairman of Board of Governors as well as its members. The members of the
governing body are from the institution, various industries and the university. The
senior Professors of the institution would represent the college in the governing
body. It also includes the State Government Nominees with the Principal as the
member secretary.

The institution is a recognized center for research under Anna University for
Ph.D., and M.S., programs. All the departments have well qualified faculty
members and excellent infrastructure facilities. In addition to that, the department of
GCE Salem is equipped with excellent computer facilities and Internet Connectivity.
The college hostel has separate blocks for the First, Second, Third and Final year B.E
students and individual block for the M.E students. The blocks are also provided with
the Wi-Fi access. GCE, Salem has strong tie-ups with R&D labs & Industries. The
institution also has a state of the art digital library to provide technical knowledge
for the students. The infrastructure of the institution also includes a magnificent
auditorium, a dispensary, spacious canteen block and a sports center. A proposal
for the construction of an indoor stadium is under process.

The college, being an Autonomous institution, raises constantly itself to global


standards. Apart from the 6 Under Graduate, 6 Post Graduate Programmes, and 4 Part
Time Under Graduate programmes, Doctorate in Philosophy Programmes in Full
Time and Part Time are also supported by the institution. In the department of Civil
Engineering a total of 476 students are pursuing their Bachelor’s degree. In the
Department of Mechanical Engineering has a total strength of 454 students. The
Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering has the student strength of 225.
In the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering the number of
students in B.E is 219. Computer Science and Engineering has a total of 239 Under
Graduate students and in the department of Metallurgical Engineering the students in
Bachelor of Engineering are 240. Apart from the Bachelors Degree stream, the
institution also has to its strength of 28 students in M.E Structural Engineering, 14
students in Computer Aided Design, 18 students in Thermal Engineering, 12 students
in Welding Technology,24 students in Power Electronics and Drives and 12 students
in M.E Communication Systems. In the research stream the institution comprises a
total of 11 students doing research in the Institution. One Research scholar in the
department of Civil Engineering, Department of Electrical and Electronics
Engineering has 5 Research scholars, Mechanical Engineering Department has 4
Research scholars, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering has 1
Research scholar Thus, the grand total of the students’ strength of the institution is
1962.

Our Institute serve as mentor institute for Government Engineering College


Raipur under TEQIP III. Various collaborative activities for faculties and students
development programmein various domain were carried out. Few of the activities in
core domain for the development of durability measuring apparatus Instrument as per
procedures of IS code and Design and development of solar, wind biogas and energy
storage based hybrid energy generation system with proper control and energy
management.

The industrial experts frequently interact with the institution for making the
students industry-ready, GCE, Salem is thus growing from strength to strength and
earning recognition for its contribution to the cause of Engineering Education. GCE,
Salem is also one of the participating institutions in Quality Enhancement in
Engineering, Education (QEEE) programme offered by Department of Higher
Education, MHRD, and Government of India In U.G., NBA accreditation has been
obtained for the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Programme up to 2022. Our
college has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council
(NAAC) in the academic year 2018 — 19 with a B” grade and is valid up lo
November 2023. Based on the NAAC outcome, the Autonomy status granted to the
Institution has been extended for 6 more years by the UGC. Our Institution is a
recognized QIP centre for research in Civil, Mechanical and EEE departments and
also continuing as Research Centre for Anna University, Chennai. The Institution is
also vested with the additional responsibility of acting as Zonal Office VIII for Anna
University, Chennai.

The six departments of the institution are recognized for their commitment and
are appreciated for their achievement during the celebration of Republic day every
year. The department of Civil Engineering has record breaking revenue generation
through Testing and Consultancy services. The department of Mechanical
Engineering on the other hand, has signed many MoUs to facilitate better Institute-
Industry-Interaction. The department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering has
contributed towards conservation of electrical energy and energy auditing. The
department of Metallurgical Engineering has an industrial linkage with JSW that
proves pivotal for the placement and the department of Electronics and
Communication Engineering is providing uninterrupted internet service across the
Institute. The youngest department — the Computer Science and Engineering
maintains up-to-date Institute website and produces 100% student placement every
year.

The institution has an intellectually strong team of faculty members supporting


the growth of our college and students, their steadfast effort in coping up the dynamic
markets has resulted in 44 Faculty members achieving Ph.D, degree, 2 faculty
members having submitted their thesis during the academic year 2019 -2020 and 30%
of faculty members are pursuing their Ph.D research programme.

To encourage the faculty members in research and development and to


appreciate their innovations aid findings, under TEQIP - R & D head, an incentive of
Rs. 3000/. is given for every paper published by a faculty in peer reviewed journals.
Our Faculty members are endowed in various training and workshop courses to
update their subject knowledge, pedagogical and management capacity building skills.
Faculty members from various departments have published patents and they obtained
the funded projects and research awards from National and International Research
bodies.

The institution, under TEQIP Phase III, is funded Rs, 7 Crores to further
improve its own infrastructure and teaching-leaning activities. Major equipment were
procured for around Rs. 6,26,88,142 by Mechanical, Electronics and Communication
Engineering, and Metallurgy department under TEQIP. In year 2019-20, through
TEQIP funding, a total of 352 students underwent internships at various reputed firms.

In the academic year 2019-2020 a total of 20 programmes and workshops were


organized by the institution for student development on multiple job opportunities.
Similarly 5 programmes were conducted for the development of the faculty members.
Regular online academic courses are conducted for the students of all branches
through NPTEL, Students have been benefited from 22 different courses offered
through Anna University Edusat. The institute conducts regular yoga classes for
faculties and students for their physical and mental well-being.

The institution in the academic year 2019-20 has added several prestigious
organizations to the list of recruiters. A total of 262 students participated and took the
recruitment exams conducted by 25 companies including Accenture, Zoho, TCS and
Infosys. A good number of 170 students were placed through campus recruitment
with an overall placement percentage as 64.88%. The institution has a good
relationship with various top companies. The institution has signed MOUs with
Infosys, Bangalore under its Campus Connect and Deep Dive Programmes, Frontline
Electronics - Chennai, SAIL - Salem, JSW- Salem, Tata Consultancy Services -
Chennai and Aerospace Engineering Pvt. Ltd. - Salem to ensure students
employability. The institution’s strong association with more than 40 industries
continues to allow our students to undertake projects, training, internships and visits in
these organizations. Eminent speakers from IITs, Nils, P&G and similar institutions
were invited to address the students on subject domains and skill enhancement.

In the National level ‘Internal Hackathon 2020, Two teams from the college
has been selected for the Final round in the Hardware section. The teams of six
students each participated under the sections ‘Delivery of Essential Medicines’ and ‘
Economical Fertilizers’ organized by ‘Ministry of Family Welfare’ and ‘Swachh
Gaanv’ respectively. In addition to that 5 more teams of the institution in the
Software category of the Hackathon are in to the finals. The section includes ‘Portal
for Formers’, Case Helper’, ‘Virtual Police Station’, ‘Student Grievance System’ and
‘Alumni Tracking System’. They are organized by ‘CDK Global’, ‘Dr.B R
Ambedkar Institute of Technology’, ‘Government of Madhya Pradesh’, ‘Government
of Andhra Pradesh’ and the ‘Government of Goa’ respectively.

In 2020 two students of the institution, one form the Department of Civil
Engineering and one from Electronic and Communication Engineering, cleared GATE
exam. A team of students from the institution played a major role in the development
of software for the ‘Tamilnadu Polytechnic Admission’ in 2020. The ICC activities of
the college includes participation of 84 students in ‘Entrepreneurship & Innovation as
career opportunity’ and a total of 100 member in ‘My Story – Motivational Session by
Successful Innovator / Startup Founder’.

The Institution lays stress not only on the academic development but on their
holistic development also. In 2019-20 our students recorded significant achievements
in sports activities also, Our college teams have participated in all tournaments of
Zone-VIII Anna University, Inter Zone Anna University and District, State and
National Level Tournaments. In the academic year, our students organized blood
camp through Youth Red Cross Club. The overall trophies were won from prestigious
Institutions like GCT, Coimbatore, and Salem Steel Plant etc. by our students
representing the institution’s literary associations.Rotract club has conducted co-
curricular and extra-curricular competition for school children to enrich their skills.
Orphanage homes are periodically visited by Rotract and Leo club members to offer
service for them. The ‘Environmental and Green Campus’ club of the institution took
steps like providing steel tumblers and plates to all the departments there by ensuring
the one time plastics are not used in the campus.
