OXYGEN SYSTEM PRESENTATION

Crew System

The flight crew oxygen system supplies oxygen to the flight crew if there is a
loss of cabin pressurization, or a smoke emission. The oxygen is supplied by
a high pressure oxygen cylinder. Refill of the oxygen bottle is possible via an
external oxygen cart.

Passenger System

The passenger and cabin attendant oxygen system is supplied by chemical


generator unit.

Portable System

The portable oxygen system supplies oxygen to the crew and to the
passengers. Portable oxygen cylinders are provided in the cockpit and in the
passenger compartment.

General Warnings and Caution

Caution: Keep all hydrocarbons (Fuel, Lubricants, etc.) away from all source
of oxygen. Oxygen becomes explosive when it touches hydrocarbons. Clean
the tool and make sure Your hands are clean to prevent contamination of the
oxygen system. Put dry and clean metal or plastic plugs on all pipes or units
removed temporarily: Put each pipe or unit in a sealed vinyl bag.

CREW OXYGEN SYSTEM PRESENTATION

The pressure regulator transmitter is directly connected to the cylinder. It


consists of a high pressure stage with an integrated pressure transducer for
ECAM indication and a low pressure stage. It regulates low pressure at 78 ±
8 PSIG.

Overpressure Protection

High pressure and low pressure overpressure protection is achieved by


safety devices consisting of a high pressure and a low pressure safety
outlets. The high pressure safety outlet is of a frangible disc type whereas
the low pressure safety outlet is a pressure relief valve. The rupture of the
frangible disk is set at a cylinder pressure of 2500 to 2775 PSIG. The
pressure relief valve limits the low pressure oxygen supply to 175 PSIG.

Overpressure Indication

An overboard green discharge indicator is connected to the high pressure


safety outlet and to the low pressure safety outlet. In case of overpressure,
the green disk blows out and a yellow indicator is displayed showing that the
cylinder has discharged or the pressure relief valve has opened.

Crew Oxygen Electrical Circuit

The oxygen solenoid supply valve is two state solenoid valve. It has two
separate windings: an open winding and a closed winding. Each winding
is only supplied for the time necessary to permit valve travel.

Crew Oxygen Mask Utilization Stowage and Test

The mask assy and the stowage box are installed adjacent to each crew Oxygen flow is indicated by the blinker showing yellow and an OXY ON flag

CREW OXYGEN STORAGE

OXYGEN CYLINDER

General

The flight crew oxygen is supplied from a high—pressure oxygen cylinder


with a pressure regulator / transmitter directly connected to the cylinder head.
It is installed in a cradle with two quick—release clamps between frames 11
and 13 in the avionics compartrnent. The installation can survive crash Ioads
of 1OG’s in aII directions.

Oxygen Cylinder Description

The high pressure oxygen cylinder is made of composite material. The


cylinder has a capacity of 2183 ltr. ( 77 cubic feet ) at a pressure of 127.5
bar (1850 psig ).
The cylinder head is a valve assembly which is made of these components:

A manual sIow−opening ON/OFF valve with a metal seat and poppet,


to reduce the explosion hazard. The valve is used during the
replacement of the cylinder and to isolate the cylinder if there is a Ieak
in the oxygen system.
A direct—reading pressure gage which gives an indication of the
cylinder high−pressure, independent of the open or closed position of
the manual valve.
A high—pressure safety outlet with a discharge indicator. The
discharge indicator is a frangible disc that ruptures at a pressure of
172.5 to 191.5 bar ( 2500 to 2775 psig ). The oxygen is discharged
overboard.

PRESSURE REGULATOR / TRANSMITTER

Pressure Regulator / Transmitter Description

1. The pressure regulator/transmitter is directly connected to the


cylinder. The inlet connection of the pressure regulator/transmitter
Iimits the high—pressure from the oxygen cylinder to the pressure
regulator/transmitter.
2. The high—pressure stage of the pressure regulator/transmitter has an
integrated transducer installed. This sends an electrical signal of the
oxygen pressure to the ECAM system in the cockpit.
3. The Iow—pressure stage of the pressure regulator/transmifter
supplies a pressure of 4.48 to 6.48 bar ( 65 to 94 psig ) to the oxygen
distribution system. This pressure supplies an oxygen flow rate of 0 to
300 I/min ( 0 to 10.6 cubic feet / ,min ) and at an oxygen cylinder
pressure of 6.9 to 140 bar (100 to 2030 psig ).
4. The Iow—pressure safety outlet has an integrated relief valve. This
Iimits the Iow—pressure oxygen supply to a maximum of 12 bar
(175 psig ). The oxygen released by the Iow—pressure safety
outlet is discharged overboard by a safety system.

SAFETY SYSTEM

The high—pressure safety outlet on the oxygen cylinder head and the low
pressure safety outlet on the pressure regulator/transmitter are connected to
a discharge indicator on the fuselage skin ( near the access door 812
).The discharge indicator is a green blowout disc that can be seen from
outside the aircraft. This disc wiII blow out at a pressure of 2.8 to 6.9 bar ( 40
to 100 psig) to show a yellow indicator. This shows that oxygen has been
discharged.

EXTERNAL FILLING CONNECTION

The external filling connection is installed in the aircraft between frames 11


and 13. It permits filling of the oxygen cylinder without removal of the cylinder
from the aircraft. The external filling connection is made of the components
below:

1. A filling connector with a filter. The filter prevents entrance of any


moisture or dust into the oxygen system.
2. A filling connector cap with a relief vaive. The relief valve releases
any oxygen pressure of more than 6.9 bar ( 100 psig ) if there is a
Ieak in the check valve of the pressure regulator/transmitter.
3. A flexible hose connects the filling connection to the pressure
reguiator/ transmitter.
4. A pressure gage to indicate the pressure inside the oxygen cylinder
during filling. The pressure gage has a two−color scale with
graduations: 0 to 5.9 bar ( 0 to 85 psig )is red, 5.9 to 138 bar ( 85 to
2000 psig ) is green.
5. The operating pressure is 0 to 140 bar ( 0 to 2030 psig ). The
filling rate is 0 to 500 I/min ( 0 to 17.65 ( cubic feet )/min ).

Operational Test

On the emergency oxygen container, pull the door stops down and turn them
90 degrees anti-clockwise to the TEST position. Make sure that these circuit
breakers are closed:

- OXYGEN/PASSENGER ACTUATION 7WR, 6WR, 5WR, 4WR.


- OXYGEN/PASSENGER/CTL AND WARN 3WR, 2WR, 1WR.
- MUSIC TAPE REPRODUCER SYSTEM 2RX.

Energize the aircraft electrical network.

Caution: Do not keep the "Mask Man On" Pushbutton pressed in for more
than 5 seconds.

Lift the switch guard and press the MASK MAN ON pushbutton. On the
oxygen control panel the SYS ON white light comes on. The passenger
address system starts the taped announcement. The oxygen container doors
open until doors stops have been contacted. Press the TMR RESET
pushbutton. The TMR RESET pushbutton ON white light comes on. The
PASSENGER SYS ON light goes off and the taped announcement stops.
Release the TMR RESET pushbutton. Push the container doors to the closed
position until their locks engage. Retract the door stops to the normal
position. Make sure that the MASK MAN ON pushbutton is guarded. De-
energize the electrical circuits. Make sure that the work area is clean and
clear of tools.
