MiniGames™ | 1
WHAT IS A MINIGAME?
By definition, a MiniGame is a short-term activity designed to correct a weakness
or pursue an opportunity in the company. MiniGames are designed to be fun and
engaging. Like most games, they should have a goal, a timeframe for play, a score-
board, and a reward for winning.

WHY MINIGAMES?
MiniGames are a fun and easy way to motivate employees day-to-day to make
improvements that will add up to year-long success. When implemented correctly,
MiniGames are proven to:
- Affect a financial or operational change: Driving results through improved perfor-
mance.
- Increase business literacy: Reinforce key components of business success such as
goal setting, mutual responsibility and performance management.
- Build teamwork: Rally employees (players) around a common goal in order to
achieve a shared reward.
-Develop a winning attitude: Create an environment where winners are recognized
and rewarded for generating results.

01 HOT POTATO

By Anderson Precision
andersonprecision.com

Anderson Precision was originally founded in 1891 as a

machine repair business. Today, the company is a contract
manufacturer that primarily provides components to the
automotive industry and ships up to 100 million turned
components per year.

MiniGames™ | 5
HOT POTATO
Company Name: Anderson Precision

1 Set the Objective: The targeted problem or opportunity.

Anderson Precision had a large volume of backlog parts. These were parts that we were having trouble
getting to the finish line to turn into sales. We had to really focus on getting these parts out to meet our
customer’s needs and drive sales dollars without increasing costs like labor dollars or premium freight.

2 Set the Improvement Goal: X to Y by when.

Reduce shippable backlog by 90% by 12/31/2018

3 Estimate the Benefit: The potential impact/return.

Anderson Precision was able to reduce our backlog from $350,379 in 2018 to $70,000 in 2019.

These pictures are a small sample of the achievement. The room that Ashley and Andrea are

MiniGame Spotlight
In 2018, the Anderson team kicked off more than 20 MiniGames, which tackled issues like
increasing the number of inspected parts and reducing backlog. The volume of games played was
helped in part by the creation of a team whose focus is on providing refresher training for the
MiniGame process. “We want to encourage organic development of new games that come from
the bottom up,” says Godfrey.

MiniGames™ | 7
“One thing GGOB has done is getting the
employees to think and ask questions
they never would have thought of before.
Examples are an employee asking how
much the tools cost when an error
occurs. They now know that it is dollar
for dollar bottom line. Although I think
we are still early in the process. The
teams that have formed because of the
department scoreboards are very strong.”

MiniGame Spotlight
MiniGames have become an important way the Ei team tackles problems and creates new habits.
For example, one recent MiniGame was called “Let’s Get it on Like Donkey Kong – the Glycerin
Challenge,” which was targeted at growing a product line that previously had limited penetration.
The MiniGame helped focus the team’s efforts on building customer awareness and exposure to
the product. The result was an impressive 4x in targeted growth—just short of 100 metric tons of
new business.

MiniGames™ | 19
“Despite years of working for very large companies, I
was never privy to the bottom line. We either received
a bonus at the end of the year or didn’t – only a handful
of people really knew why. When they went public, it
was a madhouse of clandestine meetings and money
manipulation to make the share price go higher. It seemed
duplicitous and made me very nervous…the open-book
management we have all learned at Ei has been like a light
to me; I’m so grateful. I think about our bottom line with
every purchase I make for Ei, and love to learn from those
around me who do the same. We have leaders who share
as much as possible about financial details, and even
stop to teach the basics to anyone who wants to learn…
Thanks to what I’ve learned from GGOB, I know to look not
just days out but months (and hope to advance to years)
for our financial roadmap. I have financial goals now;
this is a statement I never imagined I’d be able to make.”

05 BETTING IT ALL
ON GREEN
By GRC
globalrecoverycorp.com

Global Recovery Corp. (GRC) was spun-out of a department

of SRC Logistics back in 2013 with just five employees. The
company works with original equipment manufacturers
(OEMs) to help maximize their return on aging, obsolete
core inventories and scrap.

MiniGames™ | 21
BETTING IT ALL ON GREEN
Company Name: GRC

1 Set the Objective: The targeted problem or opportunity.

The objective of “Betting it all on Green” is to foster teamwork between the warehouse and sales to
quickly and efficiently turn a large purchase of inventory into cash.

2 Set the Improvement Goal: X to Y by when.

The goal was to turn a multi-truckload purchase of $220,000 in engines into sales with a total margin
of at least $60,000 margin in 90 days.

3 Estimate the Benefit: The potential impact/return.

As a result of the minigame we were able to get all of the material unloaded, inspected, received in our
system and in the proper condition for sale within 3 days. This allowed our sales team to get the engines
listed and begin selling. GRC was able to sell $168,081 or 76% of the engines within 90 days with a total
margin of $88,596. A customer crisis regarding a product in short supply experienced enhance and early
warning and a larger allotment of a criti cal raw material. A willingness from a CSR at a supplier allocating
additional raw materials to Ei resulting in no customer plant outages. Access to production planners that
had previously been limited

4 Identify the Players: Who can impact the game?

All of the employees were involved in the game as the warehouse handled receiving and shipping all of
the materials and the whole sales team had a hand in getting them sold. The support staff was also
involved as they were responsible for getting new customersset up, handling payments, and making sure
all orders were processed.

5 Determine the Time Frame: Long enough to accomplish the goal/change behavior.

The time frame was 90 days from the day engines started coming in on Monday May 7-Friday August 3.

6 Create a Theme: Be creative!

Our industry has a lot of risk as we buy old and obsolete inventory. We thought a gambling theme was
appropriate due to the uncertainty of sales on the inventory we are buying.

Going with the gambling theme, the prizes were also a gamble. As a group the employees would
earn spins on the roulette wheel during weekly huddles. Employees took turns spinning and if they
guessed the correct color then money would be added to the pot for the entire group. At the end of
the game all of the employees would split the pot.

9 Play the Game: Plan promotions and appoint a score keeper.

Keaton Paylor (Sales Manager) and Kelly Mullins (CFO)

10 Celebrate the Win: How and when will the win be celebrated?

Wins were celebrated each week in the huddle by announcing progress of the minigame and issuing
spins on the roulette wheel adding to the pot. At the end of the minigame the overall results were
announced to the employees and the pot was split awarding all employees with a payout.

MiniGame Spotlight
The GRC team uses MiniGames to promote accountability and to celebrate wins as a team. One
example was a sales department challenge to improve descriptions and increase the number of
inventory items listed on eBay. As a result of playing the game, and improving the quality of their
listings, their eBay revenue is up 64% year-over-year. A second example was a MiniGame aimed at
speeding up their receipt to shipment process—which generated an additional $89,000 in margin
in just 90 days.

“Playing The Great Game of Business empowers
me to make business decisions and know the
impact of those decisions on a daily basis. As an
employee, I appreciate focusing on specific business
challenges and turning those challenges into a
benefit to the company. When we play MiniGames
it makes it feel like we are doing something
different even if it is just putting a spin on the same
thing. I have never worked for a company that
openly discusses the company’s long-term growth
and strategy like GRC. I feel like I am involved in
shaping the company when we discuss goals and
strategy in our huddles. I don’t know if I could go
back to working for a traditionally ran company.”

FLUSH THE DEBT!
Company Name: Jenner Ag

1 Set the Objective: The targeted problem or opportunity.

Flush the Debt focused on increasing inventory turnaround and reducing debt. Employees were
challenged to flush our debt by doing everything from making a sale and collecting receivables to
reducing inventory.

2 Set the Improvement Goal: X to Y by when.

We have a goal of increasing our turns and reducing inventory

August 31st increase to 1.5, September 30th increase
to 2.0, and October 31st increase to 2.5!

3 Estimate the Benefit: The potential impact/return.

Increasing our turns reduces our inventory and increases our bottom line. Our goal was to reduce our
line of credit significantly. This in turn means we spend less money in interest payments to the bank.

4 Identify the Players: Who can impact the game?

Our Flush the Debt MiniGame was a company wide game all employees have the potential to impact
the bottom line. Increasing sales, collecting receivables, turning in work order in a timely manner, and
reducing inventory all have a significant effect on our debt.

5 Determine the Time Frame: Long enough to accomplish the goal/change behavior.

Our Flush the Debt Minigame ran from August 1

st October 31 st

6 Create a Theme: Be creative!

Our Flush the Debt theme was toilet humor! We had a toilet on display in our lobby with “poo emojis”
labeled with ideas to help reduce debt. We had “Roll Call” each week featuring shout outs to team
members with big wins. And we wouldn’t want to forget our massive, two state wide scavenger hunt
THE QUEST FOR THE GOLDEN PLUNGER! To keep all associates up to date with game play, we shared
out bi weekly videos highlighting our wins, great focus areas and some good old fashioned potty puns!

MiniGame Spotlight
One of the MiniGames the Kiolbassa team played in 2018 had a Ghostbusters theme: the goal was
to track the downtime of a labeling program on three production lines. The team brainstormed all
the possible problems which could or may occur and each problem was identified as a “ghost”. The
object was to eliminate all the “ghosts” resulting in longer run times. The team tracked the pro-
graming problems for 90 days and found that a single issue was causing us over $541,632 down-
time each year. By identifying the key culprit, the team then begin to find a more reliable labeling
program.

MiniGames™ | 43
“I remember when I was applying for a job at
Kiolbassa and I saw financials everywhere,
my first thought was that someone was going
to get in trouble. This was so different than
what I was used to. Now that I’m a manager,
it’s my role to encourage my team members
to own their lines and, if they see something
that doesn’t look right, to explain it. If we have
questions, other people have them, too. I
can’t imagine ever going to work somewhere
where I don’t know how the business is doing.”

money. That rate stood at 65% in 2016, but thanks to the MiniGame, they’ve boosted it to 95% in

CHASING TACOS
Company Name: Peterson Trucks

1 Set the Objective: The targeted problem or opportunity.

The objective was to raise our Preventative Maintenance (PM) Currency to 95%. PM Currency is defined
as the number of trucksinour rental, lease, and maintenance fleet, divided by how many we’ve been able
to service within the last 90 days by our mobile maintenance technicians.

2 Set the Improvement Goal: X to Y by when.

The goal was to raise the PM Currency from 82% to 95% in 90 days.

3 Estimate the Benefit: The potential impact/return.

At the 90 day mark, PM Currency hit a high of 97%!

PM currency is the lifeblood of Peterson Idealease. When techs perform preventative maintenance
on trucks every 90 days; theyare able to inspect and correct any damages or notify of repairs in a
timely fashion. The higher the currency is, the less service calls and less breakdowns occur. This in-
turn makes the cost of running the truck and the profit return on the lease higher. It also keeps our
customers up and running, which is priority one.

4 Identify the Players: Who can impact the game?

Everyone in the Idealease service department was involved. Each region of techs have their own section
to increase to 95% individually and then can assist techs in other regions when available.

MiniGame Spotlight
“MiniGames are the breeding ground for learning and engagement, especially for our front-line
employees,” says Bagwell. The most successful games the team has played are not those that
produce prizes, but the ones that have taught their employees about the business. The team
struggled to get their technicians to understand Profit After Direct Expenses (PADE) and how
long into the month it took before they began to actually turn a profit. “It’s the most successful
MiniGame that we’ve played because we finally found a way to educate our employees in a way
that made sense to them,” says Bagwell. “It got us to the point of being able to create and play
financial games.”

The GGOB is, in my opinion, the best way to
run a business. The organization is utilizing the
collective intelligence of the many people in
it. People want to be associated with a TEAM
that wins. When the inputs of those individuals
are recognized and implemented, successful
improvement occurs. The overall group is willing
to recognize areas of needed improvement,
implement appropriate changes, and work to
see the new procedures succeed. People will
support changes they are involved in setting up.”

MiniGame Spotlight
While the WEBIT team took quickly to playing MiniGames to address threats and weaknesses
in the business—one game helped them get caught up on their documentation they create for
their clients while another was targeted at identifying potential new hires—they’ve admittedly
struggled since to connect team members’ roles and departmental KPIs with their impact on net
profit. “Some of the MiniGames are overly complicated or have scoreboards designed where you
can’t tell if we’re winning or not or even what the end goal is,” says Rieger.

how every small percentage impacts our daily
lives both personally and professionally. It
makes you think about what is most important

a set plan and knowing what area in our career
we can make the most impact. It also showed
me how to count on my teammates to direct

MiniGame Spotlight
The AMBAC team kicked off a successful 60-day MiniGame they called “Cash is King,” with a goal
to tackle overhead absorption. They began by teaching the associates about what absorption
was, how they could impact it, and why it played such a critical role in their company’s goals. The
MiniGame was a huge success, as the absorption rate jumped up more than 20%—beating their
goal by 6%. The best part is that on the months that followed, the absorption rate remained
better than ever, which signaled that it had brought about a new awareness and behavior
change for the entire team moving forward.

LOAD TO ROAD
Company Name: Hildebrandt Tree Tech

1 Set the Objective: The targeted problem or opportunity.

Reduce time to load equipment/tools accurately and leave shop to jobsite without return trips for
forgotten tools.

2 Set the Improvement Goal: X to Y by when.

Go from leaving shop at 8:30am to 8:15am daily by 12/20/17.

3 Estimate the Benefit: The potential impact/return.

The cultural impact was that team members began think through what tools they needed for jobs more
thoroughly and were conscious of the time it took to load their trucks. If they left the shop earlier than
8:15am then they had a chance to earn bonus points. There were many m orn ings that the shop was
empty by 8:10am and even 8:05am. The guys would make better plans the day before to help expedite
leaving the shop quickly the nex t d ay. The financial impact was that we generated over $10000 more
dollars in revenue compared to the same time period the previous year!

4 Identify the Players: Who can impact the game?

Most everyone in the company had a role to play. Sales had to make sure they had accurate notes in the
jobs describing what tools/equipment would be needed. The office had to make sure all customers had
been contacted the day before and knew our crews would be there the fo llo wing day and that the jobs
were on the work scheduler correctly. Supervisors had to make sure crew assignments were accurate
and planned out in advance . The production team members had to get their tools loaded and get moving
efficiently each morning.

MiniGame Spotlight
The most popular MiniGame the Hildebrandt team has played to date was the first one it played.
It was called “Load to Road,” and its goal was to get trucks loaded and ready to leave the shop

MiniGames™ | 93
GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN’
Company Name: KAAPKE

1 Set the Objective: The targeted problem or opportunity.

When it became clear during a monthly Huddle that the forecast for the gross profit would drop
drastically, the team spontaneously decided to develop a MiniGame called “Get Rich Or Die Tryin”. This
MiniGame was enormously important to us in 2018, as gross profit has the greatest impact on our critical
number, financial reach.

2 Set the Improvement Goal: X to Y by when.

Generation and execution of new orders worth 400,000 euros within 3 months.

3 Estimate the Benefit: The potential impact/return.

In the past, the generation of new orders would have been a matter for the boss: the unit heads and the
managing directors would have switched to the sales mode because of the decline of orders. Now the
entire team went to work. Two “levers” were found: already approved projects from customers were
activated and started earlier - and the presentation of initiative ideas to the customer. In particular, the
latter released a flood of good ideas. These in turn inspired the customers - and ensured that the order
books were quickly full again.

4 Identify the Players: Who can impact the game?

An interdisciplinary team of designers and project managers spontaneously sat down after the great
Huddle and conceived, designed and introduced the game
in record time of three days.

5 Determine the Time Frame: Long enough to accomplish the goal/change behavior.

The duration of this MiniGame was three months.

6 Create a Theme: Be creative!

culture that I don’t know from other companies.
You move away from an authoritarian Taylor-style

thing about scoreboard management is the
transparency it creates, which enables us to

which focused on increasing ticket sales for their another fundraiser; and “Digging Deep,” which
focused on increasing the value of items donated for our signature fundraiser.

“GGOB has made us a more intentional
organization. In years past, staff might not
have been as ‘bought in’ to the organization
as a whole—more focused on program
success than the organization. Now, the
success of our core budget translates to
success for us all. And personally, I feel like
I can contribute in a meaningful way, by
cutting costs or by making sure any grants
I write have dollars for the core included.”

Family Development

Victory Mission + Ministry provides outreach and restoration to

those in need. Persons can receive a day’s worth of food at the
food pantry, a clothing voucher for necessary items, and short-
or long-term shelter. When they come for food, clothing, and
shelter; Victory wants to develop relationships to encourage life
change and restoration. Victory believes everyone has a name
and a story and great potential. The ministry wants those in
the restoration programming to live in a supportive community
with high quality employment. At Victory Mission, “Every life

MiniGame Spotlight
Victory has admittedly struggled to implement successful MiniGames, especially from the bot-
tom up. Getting better at finding opportunities to kick off games to tackle challenges and im-
prove habits is a goal for the staff going into 2019.
