what are the differences in attitudes between the young and the old toward life?

I guess the main difference in attitude between the younger and older generations lies in their priorities.
Elders are more dedicated to marriage and family life. I mean they like to allocate most of their time to
taking care of their family members. On the other hand, young people are more focused on personal
achievement than seniors are. They try to make as much money as possible in order to be financially stable
when they get on in years

Aside from those, young people are more focused on material possessions as opposed to elders, who put
sentimental values over everything else.

- quan tâm tới smt: be concerned with/ focused on/dedicated to

- người trẻ: the young, youngsters, young people, young generations, young adults, adolescents, juveniles
- người già: the old, the elderly, elderly people, elders, seniors, old generations, older adults
- lies in: nằm ở
- allocate...to...: dành tiền/thời gian cho
- get on in years: già đi
- sentimental value: giá trị tinh thần
- be financially stable: ổn định tài chính
What are the differences between the young and old in thier attitudes to problems?

I suppose the biggest difference lies in the way they solve problems. I think that the young are more (tend to be
more) experimental than the seniors. They like trying new ideas, taking risks and are willing to face the
consequences. In contrast, old people are more inclined to (are more drawn to) traditional methods. They feel that it
is safer to stick to the things that are tried and true.

Moreover, the younger generation is comfortable asking for help from others while elders normally rely only on
themselves.

- experimental: thích thử nghiệm

- tried and true: đã thử và đúng
- be comfortable Ving: thấy thoải mái khi làm việc gì
PQ: Who are happier, children nowadays or the ones 20 years ago ?

I think that children today are more joyful compared to children 20 years ago. It's because children
these days enjoy newer forms of entertainment with better technology, such as Internet games or digital
cameras.

On the other hand, children two decades ago could only have fun with improvised and plain toys,
which were not stimulating enough for their senses.

- joyful: vui vẻ
- improvised and plain toys: đồ chơi ứng biến và đơn giản
- stimulating: kích thích
PQ: What are the differences between friends and neighbours?

I reckon the difference is in the physical and emotional closeness. People are more attached to their
buddies than people in nearby houses. I mean, just because they are physically near someone doesn't
mean they have a close relationship with that person.

In addition, the bond between friends is more deeply rooted/stronger than people next door who can
stop being our friends when they move houses.

- physical and emotional closeness: gần gũi về mặt cở thể và cảm xúc
- attached to: gắn bó, gần gũi
- the bond: mối liên kết
- more deeply rooted: sâu sắc hơn, mạnh mẽ hơn
PQ: What are the differences in relationships between neighbours in the past and in the present?

From my view, one of the main contrasts is in the bond. In the past, people in the same neighbourhood
had closer relationship than today, they talked to each other more often and were more concerned about
each other's welfare.

Another distinction is next door people years ago were much more trustworthy and reliable than
nowadays. For example, people used to count on others who live nearby to look after their homes, which
is impossible these days.

Lastly, I would say that befriending neighbours now seems to be more difficult than in the past since
people have become much busier and they change houses more often.

- welfare: hạnh phúc, phúc lợi

- trustworthy/reliable: đáng tin cậy
- count on: trông cậy, dựa dẫm
- befriend: kết bạn
PQ: What are the differences between a traditional house and a modern house?

As far as I'm concerned, there have been many changes in the way houses are built technology-wise. In the
old times, residences were made of wood or brick but nowadays, they are made of concrete and steel.

Other than that, modern domiciles have way more high-tech facilities than before, like security alarms and air-
conditioning.

Moreover, designs of traditional houses are based on function while today's houses are built to achieve a certain
desired look.

- technology-wise: về mặt kỹ thuật

- in the old times: ngày xưa
- residences/domiciles: nhà cửa
2. ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES

LANGUAGE FOCUS
- benefit, perk, merit, upside, positive, privilege
- problem, shortcoming, drawback, downside, negative
What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a celebrity?

As far as I know, being a famous person has many privileges and sacrifices. One of the advantages is that people
everywhere admire and recognize them, which can help them make a killing from doing shows and starring in
commercials.

However, celebrities tend to lose their privacy because the public is always watching their actions and therefore, a
star's career is very unpredictable and unstable.

- privilege: lợi thế, đặc quyền

- make a killing: kiếm được nhiều tiền
- do shows: chạy show
- star in commercials: đóng quảng cáo
- lose their privacy: mất đi sự riêng tư
What are the advantages of having a garden at home?

As far as I'm concerned, having a yard at home has a number of benefits. To begin with, it allows
people to immerse themselves in nature, which can really help them to alleviate stress and chill out.

In addition, a garden can be a good source of food. For instance, people can plant and harvest their
favorite fruits and vegetables in their own gardens.

- a yard: vườn
- alleviate stress and chill out: giải tỏa stress và thư giãn
- immerse oneself in nature: hòa mình vào thiên nhiên
- harvest: thu hoạch
PQ: What benefits do people get from reading?

As far as I know, people can enjoy many different benefits from reading books. For example, when
people read a book, thay can let their imagination run wild, which can really boost their creativity.
Aside from that, studying books can also enrich the readers' knowledge since there's a wide variety of
books about many different topics.

- let...imagination run wild: thỏa sức tưởng tượng

- boost their creativity: tăng sự sáng tạo
- enrich...knowdledge: làm giàu kiến thức
PQ: What are the advantages of living with old people?

Well, it is clear that we can benefit hugely from living under the same roof with the elderly. The biggest
perk is the care given to children, especially when parents are away at work. Another benefit is that their
wealth of experience can help us sort out many isssues in life. This is because they have lived a long life and
accumulated a lot of real-life experience, which can harldy be found in any texbooks.

- live under the same roof: sống chung một mái nhà
- sort out: giải quyết
- accumulate: tích lũy
3. EFFECT
LANGUAGE FOCUS
- play a (an) important (vital, instrumental, monumental, indispensable, irreplaceable) role in
- have a great brearing (influence, impact, effect) on
- greatly contribute to
- take into account/consideration
- an important factor in
- key fluencer on
- a big factor
What are the effects of pressures exerted by teachers and parents?

I reckon there are a few benefits and drawbacks from setting high standards for children. One of the
good effects is that students will be motivated to study harder to impress their parents.

On the other hand, children's health may suffer from too much stress and lack of sleep, for example. As a
result, children who study too much may not be as healthy as they should.

- set high standards for: đặt nhiều kỳ vọng vào

- lack of sleep: thiếu ngủ
PQ: Do you think the culture of a country affects the personality of the people in that country?

Yes, I think so. Heritage has an immense influence on the personality of a person, especially young children.
For example, if a child grow up with parents who have the tradition of helping others , that child is likely to
adopt the same personality traits and manners. In fact, a nation's custom will dictate the future generations'
personalities.

However, in the long run, it might lead to immigrants eventually having the same qualities as the natives in the
country when they currently live.

- has an immense influence on: có ảnh hưởng lớn lên

- adopt: tiếp nhận/hình thành/sử dụng
- personality traits: đặc điểm tính cách
- dictate: quyết định, kiểm soát
PQ: Do you think weather changes have a huge impact on particular jobs?

Wow, this is a tricky question, because to be honest, my job is not at all affected by weather.

But I guess there are some lines of work in which weather is a big factor.

The first thing that springs to mind is farming. Obviously, the weather has a great bearing on the harvest. For
example, when there’s a drought, farmers are obviously doomed. And the same goes for when there’s a flood.

Another occupation I can think of is meteorologists. More often than not, they have to work under extreme
whether such as hurricanes, blizzards, and even tornadoes, which make their job really perilous.

- a line of work: một ngành nghề

- a big fact: nhân tố lớn
- has a great bearing on: có ảnh hưởng lớn lên
- doomed: quyết định, kiểm soát
- the same goes for: điều đó cũng đúng với
- meteorologists /miːtiəˈrɒlədʒist/: nhà khí tượng học

Do you think museums should sell things to visitors?

Yes, definitely, I think this business practice is perfectly justifiable. It's because museums need a source of
income to sustain their operation. As government subsidies are quite limited, they must sell stuff to make
money to cover the expenses of new exhibits or renovations. In addition, most visitors tend to buy souvenirs
after a visit for their friends and relatives, so for me, it seems resonable that museum offer these things.

- business practice: hoạt động kinh doanh

- justifiable: hợp lý, có thể hiểu được
- a source of income: nguồn thu nhập
- sustain their operation: duy trì hoạt động
- government subsidies: tiền trợ cấp chính phủ
- cover the expenses: trang trải chi phí
Do you think police officers are paid too much?

Well, public servants at large are grossly underpaid, but police officers are making a killing. This is due to
the fact that they usually take bribes from law offenders. You know, there's lots of bureaucracy in Vietnam,
so if you want to get things done quickly you need to grease the hands of people of authority/the high-ups.

- public servants: người phục vụ nhân dân

- at large: nhìn chung
- grossly underpaid: được trả lương thấp quá đáng
- make a killing: kiếm nhiều xiền
- take bribes: nhận hối lộ
- law offenders: người phạm luật
- bureaucracy: thói quan liêu
- grease the hands of: đút lót ai
- the high-ups: những người cấp trên
Do all Vietnamese people obey the law?

For the most part, I would say Vietnamese are pretty law-abiding. However, we break the law once
in a while. For example, people not wearing helmets or running red lights when driving seems to be
the norm, but generally speaking, Vietnamese people are pretty compliant/obedient because they're
aware of the fact that complying with the rules is the only way to have a fair and organized society

- for the most part: nói chung thì

- law-abiding/compliant/obedient: tuân theo luật
- the norm: chuyện thường lệ
- comply with the rules: tuân theo luật
PQ: Do you think comedians deserve so much money?

I know it seems unfair how comedians get paid extravagant sums of money but it is justifiable. First and
foremost, they have to put an enormous amount of hardwork and effort into their craft to entertain audience.
Moreover, they also make a sizeable contribution to society by enriching our spiritual lives

- extravagant sums of money: một số tiền rất lớn

- justifiable: hợp lý, có thể hiểu được
- make a sizeable contribution to: đóng góp lớn vào
- spiritual lives: cuộc sống tinh thần
PQ: Do you think people should control their moods?

To some extent, yes. Sometimes, we need to maintain our composure, especially in occasions where there is a
sense of decorum such as interviews or funerals. That being said/ having said that, I think it would be
unhealthy to suppress our feelings/ keep our feelings bottled up inside all the time, for example, when
people are under a lot of stress and pressure, they should share their emotions to their friends or confidants
in order to get back on their feet.

- to some extent: ở mức độ nào đó

- maintain our composure: giữ được sự bình tĩnh
- decorum: sự đoan trang, đứng đắn, nghiêm túc

Why do some people like to buy expensive furniture?

From my point of view, people’s preference for extravagant furniture can be attributed to a number of
reasons. First, they place great emphasis on the quality which means they are willing to pay more for products
that last longer and look better. Other than that, buying luxurious furniture is, for some people, a means to
show off their wealth cuz lavish things are a hallmark of success.

- preference for: sự yêu thích cái gì

- extravagant/lavish: quá cao, phung phí, xa hoa
- a means: cách thức
- show off their wealth: khoe sự giàu có
- a hallmark of success: tiêu chuẩn, thước đo sự thành công
PQ: Why do people smile when they take photos?

Well, I suppose there are numerous reasons for this. To start off, when people smile, they appear more
photogenic in pictures, which I think is number one priority when snapping photos. Aside from that, we
usually take photos to capture fond memories so I guess there’s no reason to frown or look upset in our
pictures.

- photogenic: ăn ảnh
- number one priority: ưu tiên số một
- capture fond memories: lưu giữ kỉ niệm vui
PQ: Why do people lie sometimes?

Wóe wòe well, it’s true that there are certain circumstances where you have to lie and there’s no way around
it. For example, when someone borrow money , many people balk at the prospect of not getting their money
back but don't want to lose their relationship as well so they have to tell a lie.

Another example is when people know the truth may hurt others’ feelings so they don't give it to them
straight, it's social etiquette.

Having said that, we can’t always justify lying because being dishonest is unacceptable, especially lying for
personal gains.

- there’s no way around it: không còn cách nào khác

- balk at the prospect of: chùn lại, sợ viễn cảnh gì đó
- give it to them straight: nói thẳng
- social etiquette: phép xã giao, nghi lễ

What advantages do the young have that allow them to try new things?

As I see, there's a number of advantages that enable young people to try novel things. Obviously, they are more
physically capable compared to the elderly, which allows them to do more adventurous things such as extreme
sports.

On top of that, when people are young, they have plenty of time to be reckless, free to fail and learn from their
mistakes.

- enable: cho phép

- novel things: những điều mới
- physically capable: có sức khỏe tốt
- reckless: liều lĩnh
What do people need to become police officers?

There’re a host of factors that decide whether you can pursue a career in law enforcement or not. First of all,
attending a police academy should be the number one prerequisite for going into this job, that's where people
have to undergo rigorous training in order to be highly qualified.

Having said that, hard work alone does not suffice. People also have to come from a family of means as they
would normally need to bribe the higher-ups in the department to get the job.

PQ: How do comedians become famous?

There are numerous ways for comic actors to rise to fame. I don’t want to state the obvious but first of all,
they have to be talented in order to make a name for themselves. I mean, at least they have to be hilarious or
have a knack for cracking jokes.

Aside from that, many people opt for creating scandals to become famous, it may sound silly, but actually very
effective. For example, if a person is featured in a commercial wearing revealing clothes, that person can easily
get a lot of media coverage. So yeah, there’re lots of ways for comedians to be in the limelight.

- revealing clothes: quần áo hở hang
- media coverage: xuất hiện trên truyền thông
PQ: What factors do you think affect the clothes we choose to wear?

I suppose people should take into account a couple of factors when choosing their outfit. The first thing is the
weather. For example, when it rains, people tend to wear beater shoes, while when the temps climb, people
normally wear fewer layers to avoid being overheated.

Another thing people should take into consideration is the level of formality of the event they're going to, in
order not to be overdressed or underdressed .

That being said, comfort is key when it comes to clothes. So it should take precedence over anything else I
believe.

- take into account/consideration: cân nhắc tới, tính tới

- beater shoes: giày đã cũ
- level of formality: mức độ trang trọng
- take precedence over: đi đầu, quan trọng hơn

How do you think the government can help old people

I reckon the government could help old people in various ways. One of them is to increase awareness among
the elderly to look out for their welfare as they age. For instance, the states should carry out projects that put
concerns of the aging population in the limelight.

Equally important, the government should finance old people's healthcare, for example, by granting insurance
policies so they could enjoy during their later sickly years.

- increase awareness: tăng nhận thức

- look out for their welfare: chú ý đến sức khỏe
- the state: chính phủ
- put smt in the limelight: làm cho cái gì đó được mọi người chú ý
- finance: cấp tiền cho
- grant insurance policies: ban hành chính sách bảo hiểm
How can parents encourage their children to develop the habit of reading?

I believe there's a number of ways to instill in children the habit of reading. To begin with, parents should read
stories to their children as early in life as possible to get them interested in books.

Another way is for parents to model good reading habits to their kids. This is because, more offten than not,
children follow what they see rather than what they are told to do.

- instill in: truyền dẫn, làm cho thấm nhuần

- more offten than not: thường thì
PQ: What are some good ways to react to changes?

I'm sure that there are a lot of ways to deal with modifications but I believe the best way to respond to changes
is to accept them. Life is full of changes so people just have to do their best to cope with them.

Moreover, people should also learn to ask for help when necessary because facing changes on their own can
sometimes be overwhelming and tressful.

- modifications/transformations: sự thay đổi

- when necessary: khi cần thiết
- overwhelming: quá tải, ngợp
PQ: How do you think people could be encouraged to be more physically active

In my opinion, there are a lot of ways to foster an active lifestyle among people. On the governmental level,
the state should construct more sports centers or recreational places to motivate people to take part in physical
activities more often.

Other than that, more campaigns should be carried out to raise people's awareness of the consequences of a
sedentary lifestyle. As a result, they are more likely to do exercise in order to stay healthy.

- on the governmental level: ở cấp độ chính phủ

What will be the result of the fact that the proportion of old people in society is increasing?

Well, I suppose the working population will be outnumbered by the dependents. Since there will be more
people in retirement, the working group are likely to work harder to support the elders.

Moreover, this may become a financial burden for the government to bear since it's already having a hard
time supporting the ever-growing population through education, healthcare and social security.

- outnumber: đông hơn

- people in retirement: người nghỉ hưu
- a financial burden: gánh nặng tài chính
- have a hard time Ving: gặp khó khăn khi làm gì
How do you think the design of homes will change in the future?

I guess there're gonna be some dramatic changes with regard to residential buildings in the years to come. As
the world population is inexorably increasing, greater demand for housing and the scarcity of land may lead to
people living in apartment buildings and as the result, the disappearance of detached houses is on the cards.

I also predict that residences will probably be more eco-friendly and energy efficient in thefuture..

- residential buildings: tòa nhà dân cư

- inexorably increasing: tăng không ngừng
- the scarcity of: sự thiếu/hiếm
- detached houses: nhà kề nhau
- on the cards: hoàn toàn có thể
- eco-friendly: thân thiện với môi trường
- energy efficient: hiệu quả, tiết kiệm năng lượng

Well, it looks like there's gonna be a lot of drastic changes. It's very likely that most historic places will survive
because people will continue to preserve them. You know, most people tend to consider them as national
treasures and they may even be transformed into an income-generating tourist destination.

However, it's also very probable that some historic sites might be destroyed either by men's recklessness or
natural calamities.

- preserve: bảo tồm

- national treasures: báu vật quốc gia
- recklessness: sự thiếu cẩn trọng
- natural calamities: thảm họa tự nhiên
PQ: Will shopping malls continue to be popular, despite the growth of internet shopping?

There's little likelihood that shopping online will render shopping centers unnecessary despite the prevalence
of the former. This is because people go to shopping malls not only for the shopping purpose, but also for
entertainment. For example, shopping malls usually have playgrounds for children where parents can let their
kids play while they browse the shops.

Also, shopping at brick and mortar stores sometimes allow people to try the products they want to buy before
purchasing it, like clothes or accessories for example, which I think is impossible when shopping online.

- A renders B unnecessary/obsolete: A làm cho B trở nên thừa thãi

- the prevalence/ popularity of: sự thịnh hành của
- playground: khu vui chơi
- browse the shops: lướt xem các shop
- brick and mortar stores: cửa hàng gạch vữa (not online)

Why do some people learn fast while others are slow?

0. If you don't understand or don't hear the question clearly

- I beg your pardon
- Could you repeat the question, please
- Could you rephrase the question, please

1. Buy time
- Well, this is a very tricky/grand question for me 'cause I don't know much about...., but I guess...
- Well, honestly I don't know much about...so this question is putting me on the spot/giving me a hard time here, but I
guess...

2. Answer
But I guess one of the main contributors to how fast a person can master a new skill is the level of their intelligence.
This degree varies from person to person since the moment they were born. Obviously a person who is smater than
others can acquire knowledge at a faster clip. (Other than that, factors such as motivation, concentration, method and
time also have profound impacts on efficiency)

3. Restate
So yeah, I definitely think intelligence is key when it comes to learning efficiency.
