Composer's note
A Little Jazz Mass was originally written for upper voices and was first performed at the
2004 Crescent City C h o r a l Festival, N e w Orleans, i n June o f that year.
1 have always loved jazz. A t the beginning of m y w r i t i n g career I w o r k e d from time to
time as an arranger for the n o w defunct BBC Radio Orchestra and, w h i l e a m e m b e r of the
King's Singers, 1 was luclcy enough to perform w i t h such artists as George Shearing,
Richard Rodney Bennett, John D a n k w o r t h , A r t Farmer, and the W D R Big Band. These
experiences and influences have a l l had an impact on the music that 1 compose.
In this mass setting I have w r i t t e n a piano part w h i c h may be played exactly as written.
However, I w o u l d encourage the pianist to improvise fi-eely o n the chord structure, and
w o u l d also encourage the addition o f bass and drums and any other instruments that may
be appropriate for the performance.
1 a m grateful to Cheryl Dupont, the conductor o f the N e w Orleans Children's Chorus, for
enabling this w o r k to come to life i n such a great jazz city, and to a l l the c h i l d r e n i n the
Crescent City C h o r a l Festival C h o i r 2004, w h o gave it such a great start. I a m also grateful
to N e i l Richardson, a wonderftil musician w h o , more than twenty years ago, gave me m y
ñ r s t opportunity as a professional arranger at the BBC.

A notated bass part, w i t h chord symbols, is available to purchase from the publisher
(ISBN 978-0-19-335655-9).

The original v e r s i ó n of this piece for upper voices (SSA) is also available to purchase
(ISBN 978-0-19-343328-1).
