1 What colour is Kathy’s bedroom now?
Kathy: Come and look at my bedroom. I’ve painted it.
Man: What colour this time, Kathy? Green?
Kathy: I decided to paint it blue.
Man: Oh well, that’s nicer than before. I hated those pink walls.
2 Which platform does the woman’s train leave from?
Woman: Which is the platform for the train to London?
Man: The fast train leaves from platform six at seven o’clock.
Woman: I want to go to Rugby – does it stop there?
Man: You need the slow train from platform two at seven ten.
3 How is Susan going to get to the airport?
Man: How are you going to go to the airport on Tuesday, Susan?
Susan: I’m going to take the coach. I can get off just outside the airport. A taxi’s too
expensive.
Man: There’s a train you can get. It’s very fast.
Susan: That’s only at the weekends.
4 Which is Anna’s family?
Man: Tell me about your family, Anna.
Anna: Well, my father’s tall with dark hair and my mother’s the opposite. She’s shorter
and blonde. Then there’s my brother.
Man: Is he order than you?
Anna: He’s five years younger.
5 When is Kim’s birthday party?
Man: Are you going to Kim’s birthday party? She’ll be sixteen in June.
Woman: Oh, yes. It’s on the eleventh, isn’t it?
Man: That’s right. It’ll be quite a big party – about thirty people. I think.
Woman: OK. I’ll see you there.

Friend: Is that for an hour?
Peter: Mm … less than that – about three quarters of an hour.
Friend: I see. And is the teacher’s car new?
Peter: Yes, and it’s not a big car so parking’s easy, but it doesn’t go very fast!

couldn’t brake in time.
Friend: Never mind. You can take the test again. Tell me about your teacher. Is he

Peter: He’s OK, he’s quite young and interesting to talk to, but my father will give me

Sue: Have you been to the new sports centre, Jim?
Jim: Yes, Sue. It’s not cheap, but it’s big and light.
Sue: Does bus eighteen go there?
Jim: That’s right. It takes fifteen minutes. Don’t get bus twenty-five because you have to
walk a long way.
Sue: I like doing sport early in the morning. Is it open at seven?
Jim: Yes, you can go there from six, except on Sundays. Then it doesn’t open until nine.
The swimming pool has good hot showers; you have to bring your own towel but you
can get soap there. They don’t make you wear a swimming hat.
Sue: Do they sell things to eat there?
Jim: Only sandwiches; they don’t sell drinks. I usually take some fruit.
Sue: I’d love to go with you next week. How about Wednesday?
Jim: Well, I work until late on Wednesday. I’m free on Saturday but it’s too busy then.
It’ll have to be Thursday.
Sue: OK. See you then.

Man: But she doesn’t like sweet things!
Woman: Let’s get her something to put in her garden, but not a book again!

Woman: So which car are you buying?
Man: The Monarch 2000. It’s lovely but I have to get a thousand pounds more from the
bank first because I don’t have enough money.
Woman: It’s a lot of money … three thousand pounds. I could live on that for a year.
Man: Well, cars are expensive.
2 What’s Elena going to take to the party?
Man: Hi, Elena. Are you taking some cans of cola to the party?
Elena: Of course, and a pizza.
Man: I’m going to take a big bottle of orange juice and some biscuits.
Elena: Chocolate ones, I hope.
3 Where will Susan buy her eggs?
Man: We need some more eggs, Susan.
Susan: I’ll drive out to the farm and get them tomorrow.
Man: It’ll be quicker to go to the market or to the little shop across the road.
Susan: I know, but I prefer to know that they haven’t been on the shelves for a long
time.

Man: How long is the film?
Woman: One and a half hours.
5 How will the man travel to London?
Woman: We drove to London last weekend.

Sea World is not open at the moment, but here is some information. We are open six
days a week, from Tuesday to Sunday, from nine a.m. until five thirty p.m. Visitors are
welcome from April to February, but we have to close in March for painting and repairs.
Every morning at eleven, there is a short film about the sea. Go to the Visitor Centre to
watch this. The film is followed by a short talk about the different animals living in the
sea.
The dolphin show begins at two fifteen every afternoon, but to make sure we can start
on time, we ask everyone to be in their seats by two o’clock.
The shop at Sea World is open all day. Children will like the many different toys and
books on sale there. There is also a café, where you can get drinks and snacks.
Adult tickets cost seven pounds and tickets for children are four pounds twenty-five.
There are special prices for school groups.
Thank you for calling Sea World.

1 Where will the man and woman meet?
Man: I’ll see you outside the cinema at six o’clock.
Woman: Why can’t you meet me at the station? Or better still, the café? We’re going to
eat there before the film, aren’t we?
Man: Yes, but we need to be at the cinema at six to buy the tickets. Then we can go to
the café.
Woman: Oh OK.
71

2 What’s the date of Emma’s birthday party?

Woman: Are you going to Emma’s twentieth birthday party in June?
Man: Yes, I am. But it’s in July actually.
Woman: Oh yes, of course. The twenty-first, isn’t it?
Man: That’s right. Her birthday is the day after mine. That’s how I remember it.
3 Where is Norah’s watch?
Girl: Have you seen my watch, Mum? I left it on the bookshelf.
Woman: I think it’s in the kitchen, Norah, on the table.
Girl: That’s your watch, Mum.
Woman: Oh, then I’m wearing yours! Sorry, I thought it was mine.
4 How much is a ticket for tonight’s match?
Woman: Are you going to the basketball match tonight?
Man: How much are the tickets?
Woman: Most weeks they’re six pounds but it’s a special price tonight – three pounds

Man: Right. I’ve got ten pounds here, so that’s OK.
5 Which is the boy’s brother?
Boy: Look, there’s my brother over there, talking to his friends.
Girl: Oh, is he the one with dark hair?
Boy: My brother’s got blond hair.
Girl: Oh yes, and he’s got the same glasses as you. He looks nice.

Amy: We spent hours in the department store. Alison wants to take all her shoes on
holiday, and her suitcase is too small. She bought a new one, but it took her ages!
Dad: Then what did you do?
Amy: We went with Helen to look at mobile phones. Her parents are getting her one for
her birthday, so she bought a magazine that had information about all the different
kinds to show them.
Dad: That’s a good idea. Did Lucy find a present for her mum’s birthday?

Amy: Yes, she looked at some beautiful shoes, but they were too expensive. But I think
her mum will like the sweater she bought.
Dad: Oh good. What did Kerry buy?
Amy: A picture of our favourite band playing at a concert.
Dad: Is that the band you saw with Jo?
Amy: Yes. She got their new CD today. The music magazines say it’s excellent.

Boy: They’re my cousins.
Girl: So which one is Peter, the one you’re always talking about? This one here?
Boy: That’s right. He’s standing in the middle because the other two weren’t speaking

2 Which day will they go to the cinema?
Boy: I’d love to see that film about the boy who learns to fly. I think I’ll go on Thursday.
Do you want to come too?
Girl: I can’t that night – I’m going to play tennis with Dave. How about Tuesday … or if
not, Wednesday?
Boy: Tuesday night is fine. I can’t on Wednesday. I’ll see you outside the cinema at
seven then.
Girl: OK!
3 What are they going to do on Saturday?
Boy: Come to the beach on Saturday.
Girl: I’d like to, but I must finish some work for the History lesson on Monday.
Boy: Haven’t you heard? There are no classes on Monday because of the football match.
Girl: Oh great! I’ll go with you then. My next History lesson isn’t until Friday.
4 Where does Paul live?
Boy: I’m going to Paul’s house to watch a video. He’s living in our street now.
Woman: In the house that was for sale? Number thirty-two?

Woman: All your friends in the same street … I’ll never see you!

Woman: It’s for all the family to use, so we really need it downstairs. What about
putting it in the kitchen?
Boy: It gets very hot in there. The living room is nicer.

1 What are the boys going to do?
Boy: Let’s go fishing. You never want to play football unless there’s a lot of people. And
it’s too hot to play tennis, isn’t it?
Friend: I don’t think so. If we play in the park, we can go and get a drink in the café
there afterwards.
Boy: Well, all right … but I don’t want to play for long.
Friend: OK. It’ll be fun, you’ll see, and fishing is boring anyway.
2 Which tent does the girl choose?
Man: This tent’s very nice – it’s big enough to stand up in.
Girl: But I need one that I can carry.
Man: This round one’s for three people, and not too heave. And this one here is for two
people, so it’s even lighter.
Girl: Oh, that’ll be best. I’m travelling alone but the extra space will be nice.
3 Which one is Ruth’s bike?
Girl: I’m taking your bike to the library, Ruth. Is that all right?
Friend: Fine. You can use the bag on the back to put your books in.
Girl: Yours has got a water bottle too, hasn’t it? I don’t want to take the wrong one.

Friend: That’s right.

4 What does Sarah’s dad do?
Boy: Are your mum and dad both doctors, Sarah? I saw them in the hospital together
yesterday.
Girl: Only my mum is. My dad was a cook, but he works for the hospital now. He drives
an ambulance.
Boy: That’s nice for them, to work in the same place.
Girl: Yes, my dad is much happier now.

Woman: You have some lovely pictures for sale. Can you tell me who painted the one

off and I’ll start the car?
Man: OK.
2 Where’s the girl’s pen?
Girl: Where’s my blue pen? I’m sure I put it in my bag.
Boy: Oh, sorry. I used it to do my homework and I left it on the table in the kitchen.
Girl: I can’t see it.
Boy: Oh, I know, it’s by the phone – I used it again to take a message and forgot to put it
back in your bag. I’ll get it for you.
3 What will the boy do this evening?
Woman: Are you going to practise your guitar with your friends here this evening?
Boy: Matthew’s playing in a football match tonight so we’re going to do it tomorrow.
Woman: Will you wash the car for me then? It’s very dirty.
Boy: Sorry, Mum, I’m going to go and watch Matthew play. I’ll do the car for you at the

Man: Did you see any monkeys when you were on holiday in Kenya?
Woman: Lots of them! But we weren’t so lucky with the lions.
Man: Oh, that’s a pity! What about elephants?
Woman: Not this time, but we’re going back next year so maybe we’ll see some

Man: It is nice, but I’ve got lots of shirts already. I need something warm to wear under

David: I really enjoyed the art lesson yesterday, Eva.
Eva: Me too, David. I liked going into the city to draw different places. Is this your
picture of the museum?
David: Yes. What did you draw?
Eva: I couldn’t decide between the castle and the market. In the end, I did a drawing of
people buying vegetables. Do you know what Luke drew?
85

David: Yes, I met him in a café after the lesson. His picture was of some people in the
park having a picnic.
Eva: I know Mary loves drawing water. Did she go to the river?
David: She went to the sports centre and drew some children having a swimming
lesson. What about Patrick?
Eva: We were walking to the market together but then he saw someone cleaning
windows in the bank and he stopped to draw that.
David: Cristina is the best artist. I saw her in Bridge Street sitting at a table having a
drink. She was drawing a waiter talking to a customer. The picture looked really good.
Eva: What a great art lesson!

Man: Hello, Dawn, I haven’t seen you for weeks.
Dawn: Well, last month I went to California for a concert.
Man: How did you get the concert ticket?
Dawn: My computer wasn’t working, so I couldn’t use the internet, and the post takes
too long, so I called the ticket office and booked one that way.
Man: Really? Was your plane ticket expensive?
Dawn: Well, most people pay three hundred and fifty pounds, but my student ticket
was only two hundred and thirty pounds. Even flights booked on the internet cost three
hundred pounds.
Man: Great! Did you stay in a student hotel?
86

Dawn: I was so lucky! My mother’s old schoolfriend let me use her apartment. That
was nicer than going to a student place or a campsite.
Man: Tell me about the concert.
Dawn: Well, one group didn’t come so it finished an hour early. That made me angry!
But the music was great and very loud – I loved it!
Man: Did you go to the beach?
Dawn: Well, it was a long bus trip to get there so I only went once. Anyway, I spent
most days buying clothes.
Man: It all sounds great!

This week I’m going to tell you about my favourite hotel. It’s in the west of Ireland and
the best time to go there is June. I’ve loved this hotel since I was a child. It’s called The
White Hotel because it’s always painted that colour. It’s built on one of the most
beautiful islands I have ever visited – Achill Island. You say ‘Akil’, but it’s spelt A C H I
double L.
It’s one of the oldest hotels in this part of the country. It was built in eighteen fifty-nine
and the rich and famous have enjoyed going there ever since. You can see the sea or
mountains from every room. But it’s difficult to book a bedroom there because there are
only thirty-six of them and the hotel can’t take more than fifty guests at one time.
Visitors also enjoy the hotel restaurant. People go there from all over the world to eat its
fish. It’s caught that day in the sea round the island. Try it cooked with tomatoes.
So, if you want …

Man: I’m afraid you’re just too late for the eleven thirty. The next one is twelve forty-

Woman: I don’t mind changing trains – I’ll have a return ticket, please.
Man: There you are.
4 How much did the man pay for the camera?
Man: I’ve bought a new camera.
Woman: It looks expensive. Cameras like that cost about a hundred and fifty pounds,
don’t they?
Man: This was a hundred and seventy-five pounds but the man in the shop took fifteen
pounds off the price because it was in the shop window and there was no box for it.
Woman: A hundred and sixty pounds is still a lot of money. I hope it takes good
pictures!

Duncan: Sometimes we watched videos of tennis matches, but on the last night we
danced and sang songs in the hotel garden. That was great!

Jenny: My aunt’s friend gave the instructions to my mother, who changed them a bit,

Jenny: Some butter, an onion, the tomatoes, salt and pepper, and to make it really nice,
a cup of milk. It’s much cheaper than cream, you know.

Jenny: No longer than twenty minutes. You fry the onion for five minutes, add

Paul: That way takes too long. I followed a path through the woods. It was quite wet.
Woman: Isn’t your normal way by the river?
Paul: It is, but they closed the path to repair it. It’s open again today.
5 What does Karen still need to get for the school play?
Karen: Dad, can I borrow something from you for the school play? I’ve got to be a film
star who’s running away from some photographers.
Man: Sure, Karen. What about my black hat?
Karen: I’ve got a dark hat already. But can I take your sunglasses? They’ll look good
together.
Man: Fine. With your long coat, you’ll have a great costume.

Boy: Hi Gemma. How was France?
Gemma: The hotel was a bit small but the weather was great.
Boy: You’re always going away.
Gemma: Well, my dad’s a journalist, so we travel a lot.
Boy: What did you like most about Italy?
Gemma: The shopping! My mum bought me a really cool swimming costume there!
Boy: Where else have you been?
Gemma: Mexico …
Boy: Wow!
Gemma: We had some amazing meals there. I enjoyed that more than being on the
beach!
Boy: And you’ve visited India. You told us that in Geography class.
Gemma: Yes. My mum’s cousin is a tennis coach – he works in a hotel there.

Boy: Is that where you stayed?

Gemma: Yes, but then we visited the countryside in the north. I loved being there. But
it was a bit too hot for me.
Boy: Oh …
Gemma: I’ve been to Australia too! We visited a famous zoo. That was the best part of
the trip. Dad had to write an article about it.
Boy: Ha … I’d like to visit Canada.
Gemma: I’ve been there. The mountains are beautiful, but I loved being at our hotel
most. It was wonderful.
Boy: You’re so lucky!
Gemma: I know.

Tony: You know my after-school science club, Lisa? There’s a competition with another
school, and I’m in the team!
Lisa: Well done! When is it?
Tony: The club meets on Monday, but the competition is on Wednesday. We’re going to
practise on Tuesday.
Lisa: Can I come and watch the competition?
Tony: Yes, but it’s not at the school – it’s at the university, in the building near the town
hall.
Lisa: So, how will you get there?
117

Tony: It’s too far to walk, so we’ll take the bus. The underground is quicker, but it’s
expensive.
Lisa: I know. So, is it a quiz?
Tony: Yes. It’ll take about forty-five minutes for five questions of five subjects – that’s
twenty-five questions. There’s a fifteen minute break in the middle.
Lisa: What subject are you hoping for?
Tony: I’m not great at biology! I enjoy physics the most. But I think this competition
will have lots of questions on chemistry.
Lisa: Is there a prize?
Tony: Yes. First prize is cinema tickets for everyone in the team. Much better than a
box of chocolates. And even if we don’t win, we can all keep our special T-shirts.
Lisa: Cool! Good luck!
Tony: Thanks!

Girl: I’m phoning about your job advertisement in this week’s newspaper.
Man: Yes. We’re looking for a student to be a farm worker during the holidays.
Girl: What are the hours?
Man: You’ll start at six-thirty am and finish at two p.m. There’s a break for lunch at
twelve fifteen.
Girl: OK. Are you looking for anything special?
Man: You’ll be working with soft fruit, so it’s important that you’re careful and strong –
the boxes get heavy.
Girl: Is the money good?
Man: Our farm workers usually get three hundred and twenty-five pounds a week, but
in this job you’ll get three hundred pounds a week.
Girl: Why’s that?
Man: Because lunch is included. But you do have to pay for your bus tickets.

before the tenth of May. The job starts on the twenty-fourth of May. I’ll let you know

Man: Good evening everyone, and thanks for coming to the cycling club meeting. Now,
every year we enter teams in the Cardiff Bike Race, so here’s some information about
this year’s competition. Pens ready? OK. The race is next week, on the twenty-second of
September. You can’t wear your normal black T-shirts and shorts because another club
uses those colours. We’ll wear blue instead. Make sure you pack the right ones, please.
There’ll be four teams with three people on each team. Steven, Petra, Luke and Alice –
you’ve been before so you can help the others. On the day, make sure you get up and
have breakfast by seven a.m., so when the race starts at eight-thirty, you’re ready. At
twenty kilometres, there’ll be a place for snacks, with cake and orange juice. No
chocolate, I’m afraid! Don’t have too much or you’ll feel sick. Last year’s first prize was
cycling shirts. This year, the winners will each get the latest sports watch! Good luck
everyone!
