-to meditate (v): to focus your mind, usually in silence, especially for religious reasons or in

order to make your mind calm – thiền


e.g. Sophie meditates for 20 minutes every day.
- parasite (n): an animal or plant that lives on or in another animal or plant of a different type
and feeds from it – ký sinh trùng
e.g. The older drugs didn't deal effectively with the malaria parasite.
- appetite (n): physical desire for food – sự thèm ăn
e.g. We worked up a real appetite climbing in the mountains.
- immersion (n): the fact of becoming completely involved in st – sự đắm chìm, mải mê vào
e.g. We were surprised by his complete immersion in the culture of the island.
- supervision (n): the work or activity involved in being in charge of sb/st and making sure
that everything is done correctly, safely, etc. – sự giám sát
e.g. Students are not allowed to handle these chemicals unless they are under the supervision
of a teacher.
- occurrence (n): something that happens or exists – sự xảy ra, sự tồn tại
e.g. Street-fights are an everyday occurrence in this area of the city.
- subsequent (adj): happening or coming after something else – đến sau, tiếp theo
e.g. The book discusses his illness and subsequent resignation from politics.
- redundant (adj): without a job because there is no more work available for you in a
company – không có việc làm
e.g. I've been expecting to be made redundant for a year now.
- in your heart of hearts: in your most secret and true thoughts – từ tận đáy lòng
e.g. She knew in her heart of hearts that she was making the wrong decision.
-to scream blue/bloody murder: to show your anger about st, especially by shouting or
complaining very loudly – thể hiện sự giận dữ bằng cách la hét
e.g. People are screaming blue murder about the amount of traffic going through their town.
-to stand/stick out a mile: to be very obvious or easy to notice – nổi bật, thu hút sự chú ý
e.g. Unfortunately the cover will need to be redesigned. The error in the image sticks out a
mile.
- to pull down st: to destroy a building – phá hủy một tòa nhà
e.g. They pulled down the warehouse to build a new supermarket.
- to pull up: (of a vehicle or its driver) to stop – dừng lại
e.g. He pulled up at the traffic lights.
- to pull through st: to get better after a serious illness, operation, etc. – hồi phục
e.g. The doctors think she will pull through after the operation.
- information (n): facts or details about somebody/something – thông tin
e.g. The leaflet provides contact information for your local branch.
- distinguish (v): to recognize the difference between two people or things – phân biệt
e.g. English law clearly distinguishes between murder and manslaughter.
- demonstration (n): an act of explaining how something works or is done – sự thuyết minh
e.g. We were given a brief demonstration of the computer's functions.
- wash sb/st away: to remove or carry sb/st away to another place – rửa trôi
e.g. Part of the path had been washed away by the sea.
- summit (n): the highest point of something, especially the top of a mountain – đỉnh, chóp
e.g. We reached the summit at noon feeling tired .
- peak (n): the point when somebody/something is best, most successful,etc. – đỉnh cao
e.g. Membership of the club has fallen from a peak of 600 people in 2006.
- to go broke (adj): having no money – hết tiền
e.g. During the recession thousands of small businesses went broke.
- to fall head over heels: loving somebody very much – yêu quý ai tha thiết
e.g. He's fallen head over heels in love with his boss.
- fight tooth and nail: to try very hard to get st you want –cố gắng để đạt được cái gì
e.g. We fought tooth and nail to get the route of the new road changed.
- heart and soul: with a lot of energy and enthusiasm – bằng cả tấm lòng
e.g. She loves those children heart and soul.
- foot-in-mouth disease: the habit of making inappropriate, insensitive, or imprudent
statements – thói quen vô ý nói bậy, văng tục/ngu xuẩn
e.g. He has foot-in-mouth disease, especially when he's forced to speak for too long, so try to
get him off stage as soon as possible.
- to crack down (on sb/st) (n): severe action taken to limit the activities of criminals or of
people opposed to the government or somebody in authority – sự trừng phạt
e.g. There has been a series of government crackdowns on safety in factories.
- mandatory (adj): required by law – bắt buộc
e.g. It is mandatory for blood banks to test all donated blood for the virus.
-to have/throw a fit: to be very shocked, upset or angry – nổi giận
e.g. Your mother would have a fit if she knew you'd been drinking!
- well-being (n): the state of feeling healthy and happy – tình trạng tốt
e.g. People doing yoga benefit from an increased feeling of well-being.
- counterclockwise (adj, adv): in the opposite direction to the movement of the hands of a
clock – ngược chiều kim đồng hồ
e.g. The police car spun counterclockwise and struck the two officers.
- genomics (n): the study of the structure, function and development of genomes – hệ gen học
e.g. She is a specialist in animal genomics.
- to pinpoint (v): to give the exact reason for something or to describe exactly – xác định
e.g. Emergency workers at the site are still unable to pinpoint the cause of the explosion.
- budding (adj): beginning to develop or show signs of future success in a particular area –
bắt đầu nảy nở
e.g. While still at school she was clearly a budding genius.
- to stem (v): to stop something that is flowing from spreading or increasing – ngăn, chặn
e.g. The cut was bandaged to stem the bleeding.
- susceptible (to st) (adj): very likely to be influenced, harmed or affected by something – dễ
mắc, dễ bị ảnh hưởng
e.g. Some of these plants are more susceptible to frost damage than others.
- pushover (n): a thing that is easy to do or win – việc dễ làm, việc nhẹ nhàng
e.g. The interview was an absolute pushover.
-to carry the can for sb/st: to accept the blame for something, especially when it is not your
fault – chịu trách nhiệm cho ai/cái gì
e.g. As usual, I was left to carry the can for his mistake.
- with your eyes closed/shut: very easily, without thinking about it – nhắm mắt cũng làm dc
e.g. I've made this trip so often, I could do it with my eyes closed.
- to be no picnic: to be difficult and cause a lot of problems – không đơn giản; khó khăn
e.g. Bringing up a family when you're unemployed is no picnic.
